Universal articulation device with double cardan joint and ball joint The present invention relates to a universal articulation device with double cardan joint and ball joint.
It is known that in these devices established with a view to ensuring a substantially constant velocity transmission for vehicles. with drive and steered wheels, we have to use, in addition to two contiguous cardan joints,
a ball joint device comprising a female ball member fixed within one of the jaws of the gimbal and a male ball member fixed with axial freedom in the other jaw.
In known joints, the two ball joint elements are arranged at the end of rods fitted into bores made in the jaws of the two universal joints. However, the establishment of a ball joint device thus designed is particularly delicate, as regards the preparation of the bores of the jaws intended to receive these, rods, jaws, the general shape of which is that of a C.
Furthermore, a hole must be made in the center of the four arms of the spider forming journals to allow these rods to pass, which has the drawback of considerably reducing the mechanical resistance of the spider.
The purpose of the universal joint device with double cardan and ball joint, which is the subject of the invention, is to avoid these drawbacks. It is characterized in that the two male and female elements of the ball joint are respectively secured to extensions of the jaw of the corresponding gimbal located on the side of the center of the ball relative to the corresponding cross member.
In a particular embodiment, each gimbal jaw takes the form of a stirrup or of a D, that is to say that the ends of the two branches are united, on the center side of the patella with respect to at the corresponding spider, by a cross member which carries the corresponding element of the ball joint.
The cylindrical bore constituting the female element of the ball joint may be blind, but it is preferably formed by a bore opening right through this element and closed, at its free end, by a stamped plug and press-fitted.
In a variant, between the male element and the female element of the ball joint is interposed a thin-walled cylindrical ring, treated so as to present the hardness and other required mechanical characteristics, this ring possibly constituting either an extension of the stamped stopper, or a separate part which can be placed in the extension of the stopper or in a blind bore.
Thanks to the heat treatment of the ring, it is possible to very easily obtain the required surface qualities, while it is much more difficult to treat locally the female element of the ball joint itself without affecting the cardan jaw. , which should not be hardened.
In addition, the extended plug or ring facilitates possible repairs due to its convenient replacement.
In order to simplify the construction and assembly of these cardan joints and to facilitate mass production, a simple bush with constant profile which can be obtained by extrusion and which can have a simple constant profile bushing is preferably used as an intermediate element of the joint. , has his.
ends, the articulation orifices of the braces and open notches to allow the desired displacement of the yokes or jaws.
Still in a variant, it is provided, on the jaws and on the intermediate element of the seal, a fixing by crimping. bearings for centering the cross pieces, thus being easily and quickly obtained by symmetrical operations, which is less expensive than fixing by cirélips.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the articulation device which is the subject of the invention and of the variants.

did it. 11 is a similar view of the seal of the fis. 10 in a plane perpendicular to the previous one; did it. 12 is a detail perspective view illustrating the fixing by crimping of the bearings of the cross members, and the fis. 13 is a perspective view of the intermediate element of the seal.
In the embodiment shown in fis. 1 to 4, the device is intended to connect two rotary shafts A and B, respectively driving and driven (or vice versa). These two shafts have respective axes X01 and Y02.
These trees must be able to oscillate respectively around the centers 01 and 02, the distance 0102 being invariable. It is also necessary that the driving in rotation of the driven shaft (B) by the driving shaft (A) is approximately homokinetic, that is to say that the angular speeds of the two shafts are constantly roughly equal. This is obtained, as known,
by the connecting device with two contiguous gimbals C and D, a ball-and-socket device E being combined with these gimbals so as to form a third center of oscillation 03 approximately equidistant from centers 01 and 02 and forming with them a practically triangle isosceles when the angle formed between the two axes X01 and 02Y has its maximum value.
Each of the two universal joints C and D comprises a jaw 1, 2 rigidly fixed to the corresponding shaft A or B and each of these jaws is connected to an intermediate connecting piece 3 by one or the other of two cross members 4 and 5, with four arms or journals diametrically opposed two by two and whose axes converge at the same point constituting the center of the spider and, consequently, the center 01 or O 'of the corresponding gimbal.
Each spider pivots by two of its opposing trunnions in the jaw 1 or 2 and, by its two other journals, in the intermediate part 3. A needle bearing such as 6 is interposed between each journal and the corresponding bore 7.
The ball-and-socket device E is produced as follows The ends of the two branches of each jaw 1 and 2, the general shape of which is a C, are joined by a cross member 8 or 9, integrally formed with them, so that, in fact, each jaw is stirrup or D-shaped, as can be seen clearly on the fis. 1. With the crosspieces 8 and 9 come bosses material. respective 10 and 11, projecting outwardly from the brackets.
The boss 10 is pierced with a cylindrical bore 12 whose axis is located in the extension of the axis X01 of the jaw 1. As for the other boss 11, it carries the male element of the ball, having a spherical outer surface with center 03 and radius equal to that of bore 12, in which this male element can both oscillate around this center 03 and slide,
during the relative angular deflections of the shafts. A and B. The length of the bore 12 is sufficient to allow these deflections.
The cavity formed between the bottom of the bore 12 and the male ball joint element 11 is intended to be filled with lubricant and its protection against dust and other foreign bodies is provided by a deformable sealing element 13 made of rubber or similar material, provided with two openings delimited by reinforced annular portions 14 and 15, engaged respectively in an external groove 16 of the boss 10 and in the neck 17 for connecting the spherical ball element 11 with the cross member 9.
The two jaws 1, 2 with the corresponding portions integrally formed with them and forming the central ball-and-socket device E are, for example, in standard semi-hard carbon steel. The cylindrical inner surface of the bore 12 and the spherical outer surface of the male member 11 of the ball joint can be hardened by any suitable local hardening treatment, for example with heating by high frequency electric current,
in order to make these contact surfaces hard enough to withstand the friction and other forces which they will have to transmit and without the rest of the jaws being affected by this treatment.
Note that these jaws are easy to forge.
There is no longer any need to machine the bores there intended, in the known solution, to receive the extensions of the elements forming a ball joint. Nor does it have to be drilled in the center of the crosses to allow the passage of such extensions. The manufacture of the entire device is therefore simplified.
The positioning of each spider 4, 5 in the corresponding jaw 1 or 2 can no longer be done by tilting the spider in the plane of symmetry of the jaw (plane of fig. 1), made possible in the solutions. known, by reducing the section of the jaw in said plane of symmetry, that is to say in the section which is less loaded.
For the assembly of the device described, the tilting of the spider must take place in a plane perpendicular to the plane of symmetry of the corresponding jaw (plane 3-3 of fig. 1, that is to say plane of Fig. 3) where two successive positions of the spider 4 are shown at 4,1 and 4b. Instead of reducing the section of the jaw to ab (fig. 3), that is to say in a section relatively loaded by the torque transmission,
a notch 18 (Fig. 3, 4) located between two swirls is provided in the crosspiece. To compensate for the resulting reduction in section, the section of the central portion of the spider is reinforced by two ribs 19 adjacent to this notch. These ribs ensure a sufficiently low rate of work, not only from the point of view of the resistance of the spider to breaking, but above all of the rigidity of this part.
In fig. 5, there is partially shown a variant in which between the male ball joint member 12 and the bore 11 is housed a bearing formed of two anti-friction half-rings 20 and 21 with a spherical internal surface 22 and a cylindrical external surface 23. This pad, which is easy to produce, for example made of sintered metal, enables the pressures on the contact surfaces to be reduced.
Instead of sparing in. the boss 10 a blind wise one-eyed, the execution of which is difficult, it is possible, as shown in FIG. 6, drill the boss 10 right through, as shown at 12d, and close the bore 12.a on the side opposite to the introduction of the ball joint 11 by a stamped plug 28 and force-fitted.
In the variant of FIG. 7, the stamped stopper 29, force-fitted and extended in the form of a sleeve, serves as a support for the ball joint 11 via its internal surface 30. This part 29 is obtained by stamping and calibrating a thin sheet and hardening treatment (generally a carbonitrution, following a well known technique).
This variant has the advantage of eliminating the hardening treatment of the surface 121, and of facilitating repairs by replacing part 29.
Fig. 8 shows a variant of FIG. 5 in which the hole 12d opens out on either side and is closed by a plug 2.9, the ball 11 resting in two anti-friction half-rings 20 and 21 which can slide against the internal surface 30 of the plug 29.
Fig. 9 shows another arrangement, in which the hole 12 is blind, but provided with a ring 31 with cylindrical internal and external surfaces, in which the ball 11 can oscillate and slide. By an appropriate heat treatment of carbonitrution or other, this ring can be given the desired characteristics of contact with the ball 11.
Possibly and in a manner similar to the previous example, two half-rings with spherical internal surfaces could be interposed between the ring 31 and the ball 11.
Figs. 10 to 13 show another variant embodiment, in which the intermediate connecting part 32 (similar to part 3 of FIG. 1) is a tubular part with constant profile, reinforced diam6tra- ment,
in the vicinity of the joints with the crosses. This kind of bush has at its ends, in addition to the housing orifices 33, bearings of the cross members, open notches 34, of a size suitable for allowing the desired displacement of the yokes or jaws 1, 2.
The bearing cups 6 rest on the collars 35 of the cross members. by elastic seals 36 and they are fixed in their housing of the yokes 1 and 2 and of the element 32 by symmetrical crimping, at several points (three, for example) of the outer periphery of these housings, cut for this purpose in a bevel in 37 (see detail in fig. 12). All this construction is both robust and easy at the same time as the number of parts is reduced.
