Cependant chacun de ces systèmes: Al/Ca et Si/Ca présente, outre des composés. définis insta bles à température supérieure à 1000o C, des combi naisons stables à haute température qui sont respec- tivement CaAl., et CaSi. Les. enthalpies;
On donne ci-dessous, à titre indicatif, deux exem ples de réalisation du procédé selon l'invention. Exemple 1 La composition et l'origine des matières premiè res de base étaient les suivantes 1 - Alliage aluminium-calcium aluminothermique à teneur en Ca métal de 17,0 0,3 0/0 ; 2 - Alliage silicium-calcium électrothermique à teneur en Ca métal de 30,5 0,5 0/0 ; - Composition de la charge : AI/Ca : 64 0/0 ; Si/Ca : 36 0/0 ; - Poids de la charge: 50 g ; - Température de distillation: 1320,, C ; - Pression de distillation: 0,20 u de mercure ;
Process for the Simultaneous Production of Calcium and Silicoaluminum The present invention relates to the simultaneous preparation of calcium in the form of metal and silicoaluminum.
Calcium metal is generally obtained electrolytically from calcium chloride. or by the aluminothermic route under vacuum by firing lime. Silicoaluminums are generally prepared by the electrothermal route.
The above-mentioned calcium production processes all have defective yields, the electrolytic process due to losses of metal, in particular by dissolution in the bath, the alumino-thermal process due to the necessary formation of a slag. of lime aluminate.
On the other hand, it is known that it is possible, by vacuum distillation, to separate the constituents of the metal alloys, insofar as these constituents form a true solution at the operating temperature and exhibit tensions. sufficiently different steam.
It is also known that the presence of strong intermetallic affinities of the alloying elements limits the yield of such separations by distillation.
Finally, it is known that, in the case where significant intermetallic affinities prevent the separation of the constituents of an alloy, the dissociation equilibrium of the defined compounds can be favorably shifted by introducing a third element present for the 'one of the constituents has an affinity greater than that which it manifests, at the temperature considered, with respect to the other.
With regard to Al / Ca and Si / Ca alloys, the vapor pressures of aluminum and silicon are markedly lower, at all temperatures, than those of calcium, which would suggest a possible separation of calcium from other elements of these alloys.
However each of these systems: Al / Ca and Si / Ca present, in addition to compounds. defined as unstable at temperature above 1000o C, combinations stable at high temperature which are respectively CaAl., and CaSi. The. enthalpies;
The formation of these defined compounds are high and show the un-bearing of the affinities between A1 and Ca on the one hand and Si and Ca on the other hand. This finding limits the separation possibilities envisaged above to the only free elements in the alloy.
Finally, the Al / Si system does not exhibit any combination, but only, in the liquid state, a continuous zone of solution of 0 to 100% of each of the constituents. It is therefore not possible to envisage an effective equilibrium shift by the addition of one or the other of the metals - Al or Si - used alone.
The present invention avoids these drawbacks. It consists in submitting to the action of heat; at a temperature of 13000 to 14000, under a pressure of 0.1 to 1 #t of mercury, a mixture of two alloys: aluminum-calcium and silicon-calcium, so that the major part at least of the calcium contained in the feed distils, and to collect the calcium metal which distils on a suitably cooled condenser.
Under the conditions which will be indicated below, the non-vaporized molten residue then consists of a silicoaluminum containing only very little calcium.
One can take as material, on the one hand the aluminum-calcium alloys, which provides the aluminothermic reduction of lime at normal pressure, and whose calcium content can reach 25% by weight,
and on the other hand, electrothermal silicon-calcium alloys, the content of which is close to 30 to 33% of calcium. The latter can be obtained, for example, by reduction of the silica with carbon and calcium carbide, or also by reduction of the lime with silicoaluminium according to the process described in French patent No. 834528.
But it is also possible, in order to improve the production of calcium metal, from richer alloys, such as those obtained by the electrolytic method from aluminates and silicates of lime.
In any case, it is thus possible to extract the calcium contained in the alloys of this metal with aluminum and silicon with an excellent yield. The procedure can be as follows. The feed suitably ground to the wheat grain module is intimately mixed and placed in a refractory crucible which is itself introduced into a distillation furnace. The vacuum being ensured to a pressure of 0.1 to 1 u of mercury, the furnace is filled with argon carefully freed of nitrogen and the chamber is again emptied.
Heating is then carried out while maintaining the suction to ensure degassing of the metal mass - mainly of the Al / Ca alloy. When a temperature of 1320/1350 C has been reached, for an internal pressure of 0.3 to 0.1 u, this state is maintained for a determined time, depending on the size of the mass to be treated and the dimensions. surface areas of the liquid metal bath. For example, when using a refractory crucible containing a mass of 50 g of mixture, one hour is sufficient to carry out the operation.
The heating is then removed and, when the furnace is sufficiently cooled, argon is introduced until an internal pressure is obtained equal to the external pressure. The oven can then be opened and the condenser removed. The latter retains the calcium deposited according to the basal tick structure specific to distilled calcium.
The weight of metal collected and the determination of the calcium remaining in the molten residue of the crucible make it possible to calculate the material yield of the extraction. Under the conditions indicated, it is between 95 and 100%, most often around 97%.
The metal collected on the condenser always contains a little aluminum in proportions comparable to those exhibited by the aluminothermic calcium obtained under vacuum. The silicon content on the other hand is very low, as indicated by the examples given below. The contamination of calcium by aluminum increases with the temperature and could be minimized by a decrease in the latter, but then to the detriment of the material yield of the extraction.
Depending on the economic conditions, the relative proportions of the Al / Ca and Si / Ca alloys can be varied within wide limits in order to extract as much calcium metal as possible from the cheapest raw material.
The advantages presented by the process according to the invention are as follows 1) A large part of the calcium extracted comes from electrothermal silicocalcium which is easy to obtain and generally less expensive than aluminum-calcium.
2) The aluminothermic reduction of lime at ordinary pressure and the subsequent vacuum distillation of the alloy obtained are more economical than the operation of aluminothermic reduction under reduced pressure,
because the material yield of the operation carried out in the vacuum furnace is close to 100% and not limited by the formation of slag which retains nearly 60% of the <RTI
ID = "0002.0073"> calcium and aluminum introduced. The low material yield alumino-thermal operation is carried out in rudimentary equipment as large as desired. It is, on the other hand, very expensive and often impossible to build large furnaces at very low pressure.
3) The residue from the operation is a silicoaluminium of high commercial value, which can be used for the preparation of light casting alloys such as those of the Alpax brand, while the aluminum-calcium slag collected in the process of direct reduction in vacuum of lime by aluminum is, on the one hand, a worthless residue and, on the other hand, a hindrance to the practice of the process, in particular due to the destruction of the working crucibles.
Two exemplary embodiments of the process according to the invention are given below by way of indication. Example 1 The composition and origin of the basic raw materials were as follows: 1 - Aluminothermic aluminum-calcium alloy with a Ca metal content of 17.0 0.3 0/0; 2 - Electrothermal silicon-calcium alloy with a Ca metal content of 30.5 0.5 0/0; - Composition of the charge: Al / Ca: 64%; Si / Ca: 36%; - Load weight: 50 g; - Distillation temperature : 1320 ,, C; - Distillation pressure : 0.20 u of mercury;
- Distillation time: one hour.
The weights and the compositions of the products obtained were as follows 1 - Calcium condensate : 10.5 g.
Content of elements other than calcium Si o / o = 0.17 Al'a / o = 1.60 2 - Silicoaluminum residue: 38.5 g. Calcium content retained: 1.12%.
The calcium extraction rate was 96.5%. The still fairly high aluminum contents of the calcium thus obtained can be lowered by increasing the proportion of silicocalcium in the filler as in the following example Example 2 - Composition of the filler : </ B > Al / Ca: 40%; Si / Ca: 60,% - Weight of the load : 50 g; Weight and composition of the products obtained 1- Calcium condensate : 10 g.
Content of elements other than Ca Si o / o = 0.53 A10 / 0 = 1.12 -Silicoaluminum residue: 38 g.
Ca content of this alloy : Ca'o / o = 5.20. Calcium extraction rate: 84%.
By further increasing the proportion of silico-calcium in the feed, the aluminum content of the distilled calcium decreases further, but its silicon content increases and the extraction rate decreases. For example, if the load is made up of 13,
% of Al / Ca and 87% of Si / Ca, the calcium obtained contains 1.75% of Si and 0,
93% Al and the extraction rate is lowered to 69%.
The composition of the silicon-aluminum alloy obtained as residue from the distillation obviously depends on the proportions of the Al / Ca and Si / Ca alloys in the feed.
