Process for the production of high molecular weight fiber and film-forming polycarbonates To produce polyesters from dicarboxylic acids and dioxy compounds, the free dicarboxylic acids can be esterified with the dioxy compounds with elimination of water at a higher temperature. High molecular weight film- and fiber-forming products are difficult to obtain using this process.
In order to produce high molecular weight polyesters, it is therefore preferred to transesterify the esters of dicarboxylic acids and volatile oxy compounds with dioxy compounds with elimination of the volatile oxy compound at a higher temperature.
While the esterification can normally also be carried out at a sufficient speed without catalysts, the transesterification generally requires basic catalysts. With acidic catalysts, the transesterification proceeds only extremely slowly. With the usual transesterification processes, the added catalysts remain in the end product.
If alkaline catalysts are used in the transesterification of diesters of carbonic acid with volatile aliphatic or aromatic compounds by aliphatic or aromatic dioxy compounds, then as a rule no high molecular weight film and fiber-forming products are obtained, since these catalysts are based on high molecular weight polycarbonate - nate have a corrosive effect.
The procedure has therefore already been to initiate the reaction of aliphatic dioxy compounds with carbonates of monofunctional oxy compounds in the presence of non-volatile, sparingly water-soluble carboxylic acids and a greater than equivalent amount of an alkali metal, which dissolves the low molecular weight product initially formed in a solvent, by extraction with dilute acid, e.g.
B. aqueous hydrochloric acid, the alkali metal, but not the carboxylic acid is removed and then, after distilling off the solvent, the reaction continues until a high molecular film and fiber-forming product is formed.
This procedure is extremely cumbersome. In addition, the added, water-insoluble, low-volatility carboxylic acid remains in the high-molecular polyester. However, when processing high-melting, high-molecular-weight polycarbonates in particular, both acidic and basic components cause a breakdown in the melt flow, which has the effect of forming gaseous carbonic acid. These gas bubbles make the production of perfectly shaped structures, such as films, fibers and bristles etc., practically impossible from the melt flow.
Moldings made from polycarbonates produced in this way also show a lack of resistance to water, especially at higher temperatures.
Aromatic dioxy compounds can be converted into high molecular weight film- and fiber-forming polycarbonates even with suitable basic catalysts which are present during the entire transesterification period. However, the catalysts remaining in the end product also cause a breakdown during processing, which takes place with the formation of carbonic acid. In this way, when it is melted, vesicular melts are obtained which make processing difficult or impossible.
Moldings produced from these melts show a reduced resistance to higher temperatures and to water, in particular at higher temperatures.
It has now been found that these difficulties in the production of high molecular weight, fiber and film-forming polycarbonates by transesterification of a) neutral carbonic acid esters of monooxy compounds or b) diaryl, dialkyl or dicycloalkyl esters of dibasic acids of the formula mel

in which R means the remainder that remains,
if one removes the two OH groups in a di-monooxyaryl-alkane or di-monooxy-aryl-cycloalkane, with dioxy compounds or by polycondensation of the esters mentioned under b) with themselves in the presence of basic catalysts can be overcome in that the catalysts during or at the end of the reaction, preferably towards the end of the reaction, are neutralized by adding base-binding substances to the melt.
The inventive method can be used with some advantages for the production of polycarbonates of aliphatic dioxy compounds, such as diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, thiodiglycol, di- or di- or propylene oxide produced from 1,2-propylene oxide.
Polyglycols, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,8-octanediol, 1,10-decanediol, m- and p-xylylene glycol, of cycloaliphatic dioxy compounds. such as quinite, 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydicyclohexyl) propane and 2,6-dioxy-decahydronaphthalene, of aromatic dioxy compounds such as 1,1- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl)
-1-phenyl-ethane, hydroquinone, resorcin, 4,4'-dioxydiphenyl, 1,4-dioxynaphthalene, 1,6-dioxynaphthalene, 2,6-dioxynaphthalene, 1,5-dioxy-anthracene and m- and p- Oxybenzyl alcohol and, in particular, di-monooxyaryl-alkanes or -cycloalkanes, such as (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) methane, 2,2- (4,4 '- dioxydiphenyl) propane, 1,
1 - (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -cyclohexane, 1,1- (4,4'-dioxy-3,3'-dimethyldiphenyl) -cyclohexane, 3,4- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -hexane, 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -butane, 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -pentane, 3,3- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -pentane, 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -3-methyl-butane, 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -hexane, 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -4-methyl -pentane,
2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -heptane, 4,4- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -heptane and 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) -tridecane.
Suitable diesters of carbonic acid with monofunctional oxy compounds for transesterification are: aliphatic diesters such as diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, diamyl, dioctyl, methylethyl, ethylpropyl and ethylbutyl carbonate, cycloaliphatic diesters,
such as dicyclohexyl and dicyclopentyl carbonate, but preferably diaryl esters such as diphenyl and ditoluyl carbonate, and also diesters such as methylcyclohexyl, ethylcyclohexyl, methylphenyl, ethylphenyl and cyclohexylphenyl carbonate.
You can also use diaryl, dialkyl or dicycloalkyl esters of dibasic acids of the formula
EMI0002.0111
in which R denotes the remainder that remains when the two OH groups are removed from a di-monooxyaryl-alkane or di-mono-oxyaryl-cycloalkane which, when heated, go out with splitting off the corresponding diester of carbonic acid or when heated with dioxy compounds, with cleavage of the monofunctional oxy compounds, transesters.
The following basic catalysts can be added: alkali metals such as lithium, sodium, potassium, alkaline earth metals such as magnesium, calcium, barium, alcoholates of alkali or alkaline earth metals such as sodium methylate, calcium ethylate, phenolates such as phenol sodium, sodium salts of - Di- monooxyaryl alkanes,
Hydrides of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, such as lithium hydride, calcium hydride, oxides of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, such as lithium oxide, sodium oxide, amides of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, such as sodium amide, calcium amide, and basic salts of the alkali and alkaline earth metals with organic or inorganic acids such as sodium acetate,
Sodium benzoate and sodium carbonate.
To neutralize these basic catalysts, a large number of organic and inorganic substances that bind hasen according to the invention can be used, for example. B. aromatic sulfonic acids such as p-toluenesulfonic acid, organic acid halides such as stearic acid chloride, butyric acid chloride, benzoyl chloride and toluenesulfochloride, chlorocarbonic acid esters such as phenyl chloroformate, chloroformic acid ester of 4-oxydiphenyl,
Bis-chloroformic acid esters of di-monooxyaryl-alkanes, dialkyl sulfates such as dimethyl sulfate and dibutyl sulfate, organic chlorine compounds such as benzyl chloride and co-chloroacetophenone, and acid salts of more basic inorganic acids such as ammonium bisulfate. Particularly suitable at the transesterification temperatures in a high vacuum are volatile substances that bind
since with these any excess over the basic catalysts to be neutralized can be removed from the melt in a simple manner. This group includes of the substances mentioned above, for. B. dimethyl sulfate, phenyl chloroformate and benzoyl chloride.
The reaction is preferably initiated at temperatures between 50 and 330, in particular between 100 and 300, and while distilling off the cleaved compounds at elevated temperature, preferably in a vacuum and while introducing nitrogen, continued until the desired or approximately the desired degree of condensation is reached. Now the rabbit-binding substances are brought into the viscous melt. This can e.g. B. be carried out in such a way that the precisely weighed amount sufficient to neutralize the basic catalysts is stirred into the viscous melt, or that volatile, has-binding substances, optionally together with an inert carrier gas such as nitrogen, are introduced into the melt in vapor form .
In the case of volatile, base-binding substances, an excess over the amount of the basic catalyst used can be used, which can then be removed by evacuation.
After the catalyst has been neutralized, the transesterification can be continued to a limited extent to achieve a desired molecular weight, if necessary.
After the end of the polycondensation, the polycarbonate melt formed can be converted into granules or directly into shaped structures, such as films, fibers, bristles, etc., in the customary manner. The polycarbonates obtained can be processed in the melt flow without the occurrence of carbonic acid bubbles caused by degradation; they do not show any carbonic acid evolution even after prolonged heating above their melting point. Shaped structures produced from the melts are distinguished by their particular stability against elevated temperatures, even in the presence of water.
Example 1 A mixture of 40 parts by weight of hexanediol (1.6), 42 parts by weight of diethyl carbonate and 0.003 part by weight of sodium ethylate becomes 1 / #. Heated to 100-130 for 1 hour with stirring and reflux while passing nitrogen over it.
The ethyl alcohol split off during the transesterification is distilled off via a column. After stirring for a further 3 hours at 200 under a pressure of 30 torr, the sodium ethylate used as the catalyst is neutralized by stirring 0.1 part by weight of phenyl chlorine into the melt. The condensation is then carried out under a pressure of 0.5 Torr by heating to 250 to the end within 3 hours.
The excess neutralizing agent is distilled off. A viscous melt is obtained which solidifies to form a colorless, highly polymeric body which, measured in m-cresol, has a K value of 65.4 and is e.g. B. can be processed from the melt into stretchable threads and films. The softening point is around 60.
Example 2 A mixture of 45.6 parts by weight of 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) propane, 47.1 parts by weight of diphenyl carbonate and 0.008 part by weight of lithium hydride is added with stirring in a nitrogen atmosphere 110-150 melted. The phenol which is split off is then distilled off at a further elevated temperature to 210 and a pressure of 20 torr. The pressure is then reduced to 0.2 torr and the temperature is increased to 250 for one hour and to 280 for two additional hours.
Towards the end of the condensation, the catalyst is neutralized by stirring 0.05 part by weight of dimethyl sulfate into the melt. The excess neutralizing agent is then removed by further heating in vacuo. A viscous melt is obtained which solidifies to a thermoplastic plastic which melts at 240 and which z. B. for the production of injection moldings and orientable by stretching fibers, bristles and films from the melt or from solution, z.
B. in methylene chloride is suitable. The K value, measured in m-cresol, is 51. The melts of the plastic are stable at processing temperatures of over 300 without decomposition and carbon dioxide release. The moldings produced from the melt withstand elevated temperatures, even in the presence of water, over long periods of time.
Example 3 A mixture of 550 parts by weight of the bisphenyl carbonate of 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) propane, 228 parts by weight of 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) - Propane and 0.015 part by weight of the sodium salt of 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) propane is melted with stirring and passing nitrogen over it.
At temperatures between 120 and 200, the phenol which is split off is distilled off at 20 torr. A viscous melt is then obtained by heating to 280 for a further 3 hours under a pressure of 0.5 Torr. Now the alkali contained in the catalyst is neutralized by adding 0.3 part by weight of dimethyl sulfate to the melt and the excess of the neutralizing agent is removed in vacuo.
A viscous, colorless melt is obtained which solidifies on cooling to form a plastic with a K value, measured in m-cresol of 53, which can be processed from the melt into fibers and films. Example 4 A mixture of 550 parts by weight of 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) butane, 650 parts by weight of diphenyl carbonate and 0.025 part by weight of the potassium salt of 2,2- (4,4'- Dioxydiphenyl) propane is melted at 120 while stirring and passing nitrogen over it.
The phenol which is split off during the transesterification distills off practically completely at a temperature of the melt between 120 and 180 in the course of 30 minutes at 20 torr. The polycondensation is continued by further stirring and heating to 280 at 0.5 Torr. The alkali contained in the catalyst is then neutralized by introducing 0.8 part by weight of dimethyl sulfate in vapor form with nitrogen as the carrier gas into the melt.
The mixture is then stirred for a further 2 hours at 0.5 torr and a melting temperature of 280, the excess dimethyl sulfate being distilled off. A polycarbonate with a K value of 48, measured in m-cresol, is obtained, which melts at 210 and can be processed from the melt at temperatures up to over 300 to give injection moldings, stretchable fibers, films, etc. without splitting off carbon dioxide.
The molded structures made from the polycarbonate show exceptional resistance to elevated temperatures, even in the presence of moisture.
Example 5 A mixture of 45 parts by weight of 2,2- (4,4'-dioxydiphenyl) propane, 50 parts by weight of di-cresyl carbonate, 0.007 part by weight of calcium hydride and 0.01 part by weight of sodium benzoate is added with stirring and Passing over nitrogen melted zen. The majority of the split off cresol distilled off at temperatures of 140-200 at 20 Torr.
After a further 3 hours of heating to 280 at 0.5 Torr, 0.1 part by weight of ammonium bisulfate is stirred into the highly viscous melt obtained. The mixture is then stirred for a further half an hour at 280 and 0.5 torr, the excess ammonium bisulfate being removed. He holds a highly viscous melt of a polycarbonate with the K value = 49, measured in m-cresol, and the properties given in Example 2.
