Wismutoxyd, Antimonoxyd, Zir- koniumoxyd, Thoriumoxyd, Ceriumoxyd, Vanadium- oxyd.

Process for the catalytic dehydrogenation of primary and secondary alcohols The present invention relates to a process for the dehydrogenation of primary or secondary alcohols to give the corresponding aldehydes or ketones. According to the invention, an improved support for metal oxide dehydrogenation catalysts and a dehydrogenation catalyst are used.
Numerous chemical reactions are carried out in the presence of catalysts that must be deposited on a catalyst support. So z. B. the dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols to get ketones usually carried out by passing alcohol vapors at elevated temperatures over catalytic metal oxides located on a support. In general, oxides of the metals of group II of the periodic table are used, to which oxides of the metals of group IV and / or V are added as promoters, stabilizers, etc.
During the dehydrogenation one usually works at temperatures between 200 and 550 C, mostly at 390-485 C. The metal oxide catalysts are more effective when they are on a support than when they are used on their own. The usually used catalyst carriers are turnings made of iron or brass, metal chips, pumice stone, alumina, porcelain, etc. of such a size that a good distribution of the oxide in the catalyst chamber is guaranteed.
The metallic supports have largely found their way into technology as useful, easily replaceable supports.
The use of the previous supports has some disadvantages and difficulties. One of them is the rapid drop in the conversion yield during the useful life. Another problem is the pronounced olefin selectivity, i.e. the tendency of the catalyst to split off water rather than hydrogen from the alcohol. Furthermore, the catalysts used earlier, especially when it came to iron or brass chips, were difficult to remove from the reaction tubes.
It has now been found that by using coke with a very low ash and silica content as a support for dehydrogenation catalysts, a catalyst mixture is obtained which is practically free from the above-mentioned disadvantages. Not only is the support considerably cheaper than metallic supports, but the catalysts applied to it remain effective for longer periods of time and give higher yields than the same catalysts when they are supported on metal, and the tendency to form olefins is considerably lower.
As has now been found, the dehydrogenation of primary and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones succeeds perfectly if the alcohols at temperature and pressure conditions at which a dehydrogenation takes place, passes over a catalyst which is an oxide Metal of the Il.
Group of the periodic table on the surface of a support made of coke pieces, the total ash content of the coke not being more than 1.511 / o and the silicon dioxide content not being more than 0.75% by weight.
It is essential that the coal used is practically free from silica or substances containing silicon. It has been shown that these components promote dehydration and olefin formation. For this reason, activated charcoal and charcoal are generally unsuitable as carriers due to their silica content. However, coke made from selected coals or petroleum works particularly well.
The catalyst can be applied to the carrier by processing metal oxide or oxides with water or another liquid to form a paste-like suspension. The coke in the form of blocks or granules with an average size of 12.7 X 12.7 X 12.7 mm is mixed with the oxide paste and the oxide according to known methods, e.g. B. stored on it in a ball mill. During the treatment, the oxide is deposited on the coke, the outer surface of the mass remaining relatively smooth. The particles are then dried at 100-150 C, after which they are ready for use.
If desired, the coke can be washed with water or treated with the aqueous solution of an alkaline substance such as sodium or potassium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide or the corresponding carbonate before it is used in the catalyst mixture. Zinc acetate has also proven to be a very good pretreatment agent for suppressing olefin formation.
The metal oxides used in the dehydrogenation catalyst are, for. B. zinc oxide, magnesium oxide and beryllium oxide. Each of these oxides can be used with the oxides of copper and / or chromium, while the following oxides can be used as stabilizers and catalysis-promoting substances:
Bismuth oxide, antimony oxide, zirconium oxide, thorium oxide, cerium oxide, vanadium oxide. The amount of the latter oxides is generally between 1 and 15% by weight, preferably about 614, based on the weight of the total mixture.
The following dehydrogenation tests according to Example I show the effectiveness of the coke-based catalyst and its superiority over the conventional support made of brass chips. In this example, secondary butyl alcohol is dehydrated to methyl ethyl ketone (MÄK).

When carrying out a test on a technical scale, it was found that after 50 days of testing when using a carrier made of coke, the conversion rate only decreased by 0.3% per week, while the loss of activity in the case of catalysts on a brass carrier per week 1,
2%. This feature is of great importance in that it results in higher average yields and longer usefulness for coke supported catalysts. It was also found that the catalyst coating adhered considerably better to the coke than to the brass chips. Furthermore, the catalyst is very light compared to brass, which makes it easier to handle and requires less manpower, so that at the end of the test the unit was operational again in 2.2 days, which is a time saving of 3, compared to supported brass catalysts. 4 days.
beispiet ii The figures of Example 11 clearly show the advantages in terms of time in the operation of a technical plant when carrying out the process according to the invention compared to processes in which brass catalysts are used. It is necessary to stop the experiment if the olefin formation becomes too high, clogging occurs and hot spots appear.
