Electromagnetic clutch The present invention relates to an electromagnetic clutch with magnetizable particles in an annular air gap which, under the influence of a magnetic field, effect the coupling between the driving and the driven part.
In many such so-called magnetic powder clutches, the driven part has the shape of a grooved or perforated shell with a circular flange. In the known designs, the driven shells are rigid structures and all parts of the flange lie on the same circle. The flange itself protrudes into an annular gap formed by parts of the driving part. In the area of the shell and the gap, magnetizable particles are arranged which, when a magnetic field penetrating the gap is formed, couple the shell and the driving part to one another so that they rotate like a unit.
Since the disk-shaped part of the shell is usually non-magnetic, the magnetic flux is concentrated on the flange and on the driving part. If the clutch is released, that is, if there is no magnetic flux, the magnetizable particles move freely. Openings in the disk-shaped part of the shell and grooves in the flange make it easier to distribute the powder, keep the inertia of the shell small and improve the coupling between the driving and driven parts.
Since such a shell is a rigid structure, in the event that a coupling with a certain torque characteristic is required, it may be necessary to design another shell and manufacture it precisely according to these dimensions, even if a shell is available, whose dimensions are only slightly different. It is clear that such efforts and practices limit the mass production of couplings of this type.
The invention now wants to create an improved magnetic powder clutch.
Furthermore, the invention seeks to provide an improved shape and construction of a shell for magnetic powder clutches, which facilitates the mass production of such clutches.
The purpose of the invention is also to create a driven part of a magnetic powder clutch, wel cher is adjustable to achieve different torque characteristics.
The invention is explained using the drawing using an exemplary embodiment. In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a cross section of the coupling with a shell according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a view of the driven member shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section along line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Figures 4 and 5 are side and plan views, respectively, showing the formation of a tray according to the invention.
The iron powder coupling shown has a driven member in the form of a shell divided into segments, which shell is preferably made from a single piece and has a plurality of circumferentially distributed slots which extend from the edge to halfway the center of the disc and segments form. The segments of the edge do not lie on the same circle. The segments of the edge can be set so that they meet the requirements that are placed on the coupling.
1 shows a magnetic iron powder coupling with a driving member 10, a driven shell 12 and a certain amount of magnetizable particles 14.
The driving member 10 comprises the clutch housing 16 made of magnetic material. For the sake of simplicity, the entire space between the driving and the driven link in the drawing is completely filled with iron powder, but it is clear that only as much iron powder is needed as is necessary to move around the area of the annular air gap and the flange of the driven member to establish an effective driving connection. The housing 16 forms the outer part of a magnetic body. Part 18 forms a magnetic core and is centered in part 16. The housing and core are designed so that they leave an annular opening for a coil 20.
Between the coil 20 and the housing 16, a ring 22 of non-magnetic material is arranged, which limits the flux in the vicinity of the coil and concentrates it in the narrow gap. In the example shown, this gap is next to the ring 22 and between the housing 16 and the core 18. The parts of the housing 16 and the core 18, between which the gap is located, form pole pieces. Such an arrangement is already known from the American patent number 2705064.
26 is a cover which is screwed onto the housing 16 with the aid of screws 27 and closes it. The shell 12 is in the cavity which is closed by the housing 16, the core 18 and the cover 26, arranged, the flange 28 of which protrudes into the gap between the poles. The cover 26 has a toothing on its periphery so that it can be driven from the outside, for example by a pinion on a motor shaft, not shown.
The housing 16 has a part with a smaller diameter, in which a ring 30 made of insulating material, such as Bakelite (registered trademark), is set, which is held by a shrunk ring 32. The ring 30 carries two slip rings 34, 36 which are partially let into the body of the ring 30. 38 is an insulating part which is net angeord in the housing 16 between slip ring 34 and coil 20. One end of the winding of the coil 20 sets openings in the insulating part 38 and in the ring 30 and is conductively connected to the slip ring 34. The other end of the winding of the coil 20 is guided in the same way through openings in a similar union insulating part and in the ring 30, and is connected to the other slip ring 36.
In this arrangement, brushes (not shown) can be placed on the outer surface of the slip rings and connected to an external power source in order to excite the coil 20.
The shell 12 is connected to a driven shaft 40 by brazing or spot welding. The shaft 40 protrudes through the center of the core 18 and protrudes from the clutch housing. On the outer part of the shaft 40, a pinion 42 is attached which rotates with the shaft. The shaft 40 is centered with the aid of bearings 44 and 46. These bearings are pressed into a bore in the core 18 and are held at a distance by a bushing 48.
The cavity into which the shell 12 is inserted is filled with paramagnetic material. This material can be some kind of mixture as described in the above patent. As usual, a rubber sleeve 50 in a metal sleeve 52 forms a seal against the powder. The sleeve 52 encompasses the shaft 40 and is supported by the bore in the core 18. The rubber sleeve 50 seals against the sleeve 52 and against the shaft 40.
A stub shaft 54, which runs coaxially to the shaft 40, is also arranged on the cover 26. This arrangement allows the coupling to be rotatably mounted with the aid of both shafts 40, 54.
The above-mentioned patent specification explains the mode of operation of a coupling of the type described above. It should therefore suffice to point out that the driving member 10 is driven by an external power source with the aid of the external toothing on the cover 26. When the coil 20 is not energized, the particle mass 14 is free and the clutch is switched off, so that the shell 12 does not rotate with the member 10. If, on the other hand, the coil 20 is excited, then the particles align themselves with respect to the field in the gap between the poles and establish a firm connection between the driving and the driven members.
The shell 12 now rotates together with the driving part 10 and drives the pinion 42. A driven member (not shown) can be connected to the pinion 42 and is driven by this in the engaged state of the clutch.
The shell 12 is a simple, one-piece part made of magnetizable material, but it can also consist of a magnetizable flange on a non-magnetic disk. In the flange 28 several slots 60 are arranged over the circumference .disparted, which extend over the entire width of the flange and which end in the disk part in the middle between the flange and the axis (see Fig. 2 and 3). Slots of this length are used, among other things, to reduce the outer surface of the driven part and to reduce undesirable friction between the shell and the powder when idling.
The openings 62 in the disk portion of the bowl also serve the same purpose. The slots and openings also facilitate the distribution of the powder in the gap when the coil is energized. The slots in the flange increase the adhesion with and through the powder.
The design described above with a plurality of segments or tongues 64 allows an optional setting of the same, through which the desired adhesion to the powder and the desired tightening and torque can be achieved. How this is achieved will be described with reference to FIGS. 4 and 5.
The shell 12 can be easily manufactured, for example by a single punching process in which a disc with the desired number of slots and openings is formed. This disk is then attached to the shaft 40, after which a punch 70 (Fig. 5) is pushed over the shaft, which rests on the disk. The punch 70 is preferably an element which can be easily machined and then retains its shape, such as hardened tool steel. However, another material can also be used.
Preferably, the material of the shell is so soft that the flange can be easily shaped. If all segments are to lie on the same circle for the time being, then all the segments forming the flange are bent and pressed against the circular order of the punch 70. The punch 70 can be dimensioned such that, when all of the segments are in contact with its periphery, a flange is formed which lies almost in the middle of the gap between the pole pieces. However, in order to meet the demands placed on the torque and to compensate for changes to be described later, the individual segments are e.g. B. arranged alternately at a distance from the punch 70.
This is done, for example, with the help of sensors that are inserted between the stamp and the corresponding segments, after which the segments are bent. If the punch is removed and the shell is installed in the coupling, then these segments are closer to the outer pole.
It has been shown that when a segment is closer to one pole than another, the holding force between the poles and the neighboring segment surfaces is greater than when the segment is in the middle between the poles. One or more of the segments should therefore be located closer to the outer pole in order to be able to transmit greater torque in this way. If two or more segments are arranged in this way, then these can be either adjacent or separate segments. The segments arranged in this way are located closer to the outer of the two pole pieces and each makes a contribution to increasing the torque transmission.
From the foregoing it can be seen that all segments can originally lie on the same circle, which is either closer to the inner pole or closer to the outer pole, and that selected segments are later adjusted so that they lie outside this circle. If all segments are originally closer to the inner pole, then adjusting a segment to a position between the original and a point in the middle between the poles causes a decrease in the torque; Another adjustment of the segment in a position between the center and the outer pole causes an increase in torque. The opposite occurs when all segments are originally closer to the outer pole and individual segments are adjusted inward.
In a preferred embodiment, the segments are arranged offset from a central circumferential line between the poles (see FIG. 5). In this arrangement, further relocation of any segment in a position between the ur nal position and the central circumference causes a smaller torque than in the original arrangement. If one of the inner segments is brought into a position closer to the outer pole, then this causes an increase in torque over the entire area. The segments closer to the outer pole contribute more to the tightening and torque than those closer to the inner pole.
This can be explained by the fact that the surfaces of the outer segments facing the outer pole face are larger than the surfaces of the inner segments facing the inner pole face.
Another advantage of this possibility of adjusting the link driven by the clutch is that shells of the same size can be produced with stamped parts which can be built into clutches with different torque characteristics. This setting option is also advantageous when clutches are to be produced with almost the same torque characteristics.
It is known that in the mass production of couplings of the same type, various influences related to the assembly of the parts influence the effect of the finished couplings. Such factors are, for example: a) Massabwei variations of the metal parts, e.g.
B. the housing 16 and the core 18, which determine the air gap and influence the magnetic flux in these parts, b) deviations from the prescribed magnetic properties of the powder, c) bearing friction, d) frictional torque caused by the seal, and e) deviations the permeability of the metal parts as a result of unequal heat treatment. If the - parts are assembled and it turns out that the operating data of the coupling deviate from the specified standards, then it is easy to change the position of one or more segments of the flange of the shell in order to do so Bring the torque characteristics within the permissible limits.
The design of the shell thus allows the flange to be shaped in such a way that it compensates for the effect of the many influences which would otherwise make the coupling unusable for a specific application. The mass production of clutches which are supposed to have nearly the same torque characteristics is therefore simplified by using such a driven shell.
