Process and device for the continuous production of rod-shaped or tubular, endless moldings from thermoplastics with a narrow melting range
Rod-shaped profile bodies made of plastics with a narrow melting range, e.g. B. from linear polymers such as polyamides, polyesters, polyethylene, etc., are mostly produced in a discontinuous manner up to now by pressing the molten plastic into a closed shape corresponding to the desired cross-section and holding it under pressure until the plastic solidifies by cooling.
The difficulties encountered when filling the mold are avoided, for example, by adding more than one closed mold to the machine which presses the molten material under pressure into a mold, the feed line to one mold being provided with a safety valve for discharging the melt not taken up by one mold into a second mold (German patent specification No. 883062). With this change, the process is likely to be continuous, but the length of the profile bodies is limited by the use of closed shapes.
It has also already been proposed to make the process for the production of elongated profile bodies continuous, the length of the profile body not being limited by adding an open cooling pipe to a so-called extruder through which the melt is guided, whereby it gradually solidifies. As a result of the cooling, the deformed material shrinks and the solidified molded body detaches from the walls of the tubular form (Switzerland.
Patent No. 297508). It turns out, however, that because of their thin liquid, a counterpressure in the form mentioned must first be exerted on polycondensate melts until the melt that was first introduced into the tube has solidified. However, this has the effect that the shrinkage that always occurs is compensated for again by the material pressed in by the screw press, so that the solidified molded body sticks to the pipe wall.
According to a further proposal, continuous production of rods from polycondensates can be achieved if so-called sliding molds are used on an extruder, which support the rod-shaped shaped body until it has solidified. Such a form consists of two parts: one is firmly connected as a tube to the nozzle mouth of the extruder, while the second part is mounted as an outer tube so that it can be moved coaxially over the first. The movable part is closed with a lid at the start of production. When the mold fills with material, the movable part, which may be provided with a cooling device, is allowed to slide away from the nozzle mouth under the pressure of the melt delivery in the mold.
The melt solidifies in this molded part, whereupon the displaceable tube is pushed back against the nozzle mouth. Since sticking of the molding to the mold wall cannot be avoided even after this method, the displaceable part is designed in the form of two shells which complement each other to form a tube, so that it can be detached from the solidified piece of the molding.
However, this procedure is quite cumbersome.
In addition, the molding surface does not have a clean surface, so reworking is necessary.
It has now been found that the production of endless moldings, such as rods or hollow bodies, from thermoplastics with a narrow melting range can be designed continuously in a simple manner without the moldings sticking to the mold wall. According to the invention, the plasticized plastics are pressed from an extruder into an open mold. During extrusion, a filter, which forms a part of the mold wall surrounding the entire cross-section of the mold and which creates a pressure drop that is greater than the extruder pressure, is applied between the mold wall and the molding to apply a lubricant to the molding in the form of a film.
The temperature of the plastic in the mold is regulated, for example, so that the plastic is kept in a plastic state between the nozzle of the extruder and the filter, if necessary.
After passing through the filter, the molding can be cooled.
The device for carrying out the method consists of an extruder and a subsequent mold, the mold wall, in addition to the filter, having other parts surrounding the entire cross section with devices for temperature control. For example, a heating device can be attached between the nozzle of the extruder and the filter and a cooling device can be attached after the filter.
In and of itself it would be conceivable to apply the lubricant film, which prevents the molding from sticking to the mold wall during solidification, through a gap in the inner wall of the mold.
It is known, however, that large pressure fluctuations occur at the nozzle of so-called screw presses or extruders, so that uniform lubricant metering through a gap is difficult to achieve. The use of filter material with a filter resistance that is greater than the ejection pressure means that pressure fluctuations at the extruder outlet have practically no influence on the lubricant supply. The filter used is preferably sintered material which is temperature-resistant, inert to the emerging melt and corrosion-resistant to the lubricant, such as sintered iron, sintered corundum, sintered glass, etc.
The invention is to be explained, for example, with reference to the drawing, which shows a longitudinal section through a device.
The melt 1 flows, conveyed by the screw 3, through the housing 2 and through the nozzle mouth 4.
The device for shaping is connected to the nozzle mouth by means of the flange 13. This consists of the filter 5 with high filter resistance, which is connected to a gear pump 7 via a pressure compensation chamber 6. A lubricant in the form of a film covering the surface is fed through the gear pump 7 to the pressure compensation chamber 6 and from here via the filter 5 to the still molten strand emerging at the nozzle mouth. The lubricant is taken from the storage container 8. Under certain circumstances it is advantageous to attach an intermediate piece 9, which is provided with a heating device 10, between the filter and the nozzle mouth, in order to be able to counteract the risk of the melt solidifying in the nozzle.
Following the filter piece, the mold 11 is provided with a double jacket 12, so that the solidification can be accelerated by cooling.
Since the delivery rate of the screw press remains constant regardless of the cross-section of the profile produced, only the feed rate changes with the cross-section, so that the amount of lubricant supplied can remain practically constant. The pressure of the melt at the nozzle mouth normally fluctuates between 20 and 50 at. The filter resistance should be around 50-60 at under these circumstances, so that the lubricant pressure in the compensation chamber must be around 100-110 at. Oils are preferably used as lubricants. Practically all oils can be used that remain stable at the working temperature and have a viscosity that ensures lubrication at elevated temperature and pressure.
The lubricant used should not mix with the molten plastic under the conditions prevailing in the mold and should be inert towards it. Of course, a slight absorption of the lubricant in the plastic cannot be prevented.
At the beginning of the production of rod-shaped molded articles, a counter pressure must of course be exerted on the melt in the mold by means of a piston which fits into the mold as precisely as possible and which is as close as possible to the nozzle mouth. This piston is pushed back into the mold as the molding advances and is finally removed.
example 1
A round rod made of polycaprolactam with a diameter of 50 mm is produced on an extruder with a 45 mm screw. The working speed is about 5 kg / hour, which corresponds to a feed rate of 22.5 m / hour. corresponds. The temperature of the melt at the nozzle mouth is 250 "C. Paraffin oil is fed through the filter in an amount of about 0.1 to 0.4 cm3 / min. The pressure of the melt at the nozzle is 50 at, the filter resistance is 60 at so that the lubricant pressure in the pressure equalization vessel must be 110 at.
Hollow bodies, such as pipes etc., can of course also be produced using the same process.
Of course, a mold with a core must be used, with both the outer wall of the mold and the core itself being designed as a filter at the same height as possible after the nozzle mouth, so that the lubricant film covers the outer and inner surface of the resulting plastic pipe.
Example 2
A polystyrene molding powder is formed into a rod 10 mm in diameter by heating it to 225 "C in a screw press and inserting it through the nozzle mouth into a mold whose wall consists partly of a filter made of sintered iron. The length of the mold is 8 m. The lubricant - in this case silicone oil - is pressed out of the sintered iron filter at a pressure of 65 atm, in an amount of about 0.6 cm3 / min, so that the lubricant film permanently covers the inner surface of the mold. The temperature in the jacketed pipe is 77 "C and is maintained with the help of hot water. The rod is moved at a speed of 1.03 miMin., Which is 5 kg / hour. corresponds, pressed out.
Example 3
Nylon 66 chips are plasticized on a screw press at 270 "C and continuously ejected through a mold 6 m long and 20 mm inside diameter at a rate of 13 m / hour.
A sintered metal ring is attached between the nozzle mouth of the screw press and the mold, which is cooled with water, through which paraffin oil can be injected at a pressure of 80 atm. press in. The paraffin oil envelops the stick with a film of lubricant and prevents it from sticking to the wall of the mold.
