Fig. I eine Vorderansicht eines Trommeltrockners,

The invention relates to a method for treating fully fashioned textiles with textile auxiliaries which improve their properties, in particular antistatic agents or softeners, within the textile industry by contacting the textiles with a dispensing device for the textile auxiliary which is immovable with respect to the drying drum while the textiles are being circulated in a heated drum dryer .
It is customary to treat all kinds of textiles, such as wool, cotton, silk, nylon, polyester, non-iron fabrics and the like, with chemicals that are textile auxiliaries or treatment agents for textiles in order to make the textiles soft and grippy Matting, to reduce knots or shrinkage, in order to free the textiles from electrostatic charge, to make the textiles resistant to bacteria, to deodorize them and to improve their properties in other ways. The use of such means allows dried textiles to be sorted and folded more easily and quickly.
This is usually achieved by adding an aqueous solution or dispersion of the agent intended for treating the textiles either into the wash water during the washing process or into the rinse water during the rinsing process.
Experience has shown that the addition of agents intended for the treatment of textiles during the rinsing process is often much more effective than the addition of these conditioning agents during the washing process. Since some washing machines do not have automatic devices for adding fabric softeners, a person must monitor the washing process in order to add the agents by hand during the winding process. This is impractical and is therefore often overlooked.
Even if the washing machine is provided with an automatic addition device for the agents, the use of treatment agents for the textiles is inconvenient because a liquid suspension has to be added in a measured amount. and also time consuming and uneconomical because a large amount of the agent is lost with the wastewater.
In addition, the fabric softener is usually added to the rinse bath, which still contains soap or detergent and dirt, which leads to deposit problems and an interaction between anionic surfactant and cationic softener, which are incompatible with one another, which in turn increases the effectiveness the washing or rinsing process is impaired.
It has already been proposed to add liquid agents for textiles in drum dryers, but this proposal has not been accepted in practice, presumably because very complicated addition devices are required to carry out this proposal.
In US Pat. No. 3,442,692 it is proposed to use chemicals as treatment agents for textiles which are added to the textiles when they are circulated in a tumble dryer or mixed with one another and coated with a flexible substrate, e.g. B. a soaked with the conditioning chemicals sub strate. such as paper or textile material. The chemicals are likely to be transferred to the textiles to be conditioned when they are circulated in the dryer.
Although this proposal has some advantages, it has the disadvantage that it causes relatively high costs because a flexible substrate has to be impregnated that has to be replaced after use, which in turn does not ensure that the conditioning agent will last for long periods of time Textiles are fed in equally large quantities.
US Pat. No. 3,633,538 describes the treatment of textiles in tumble dryers by means of a spherical body having a hollow interior and a plurality of openings in communication therewith, the hollow interior and the openings being filled with a solid textile auxiliary; this body is placed together with the clothes to be dried in a domestic tumble dryer, the amount of textile auxiliary released depending on the temperature of the dryer and the wiping effect of the tumbled clothes.
US Pat. No. 3,634,947 describes the use of a carrier, which carries a textile auxiliary on one of its outer surfaces and is fastened to an inner wall of the drying drum, for treating fiber materials in an automatic clothes dryer.
The German Offenlegungsschrift 2 021 561 relates to a method for applying an aid to a textile material in a hot air textile dryer, in which a treatment agent is used which has the aid and a diluting medium and which is finely divided or applied to a carrier or contained in liquid form and in a perforated ball or can be spherical or lumpy.
In contrast to the known dispensing devices and treatment agents, the dispensing device used according to the invention consists of a solid or semi-solid material containing the textile auxiliary, its melting or softening point, surrounded by a cover or a bag made of at least partially permeable textile material, in the form of a compact three-dimensional body is in the range of the dry temperature.
The dispensing device used according to the invention can be used more than five times, in the vast majority of cases even more than 40 times, without poor results being obtained over time, while the known dispensing devices and treatment agents are mostly intended for single use only.
If they can be used several times, such as the spherical bodies of US Pat. No. 3,633,538, there is a risk that the textiles in the drying drum will be soiled or stained and / or that the amount of textile auxiliary released will decrease over time; This is due to the fact that the textile auxiliary does not emerge from a supply surrounded by a shell in a practically constant amount through a permeable material, but is released through abrasion.
Those dispensing devices are particularly advantageous in which the solid or semi-solid material has as broad a softening range as possible, so that the amount of the textile auxiliary dispensed is sufficiently large even at the lower drying temperatures. If the solid or semi-solid material only melts completely above the drying temperature, no soiling of the textile material can occur. A solid or semi-solid material that is present as a gel in the dry temperature range, such as the textile auxiliary used in Example 1, is ideal.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the dispensing device used is a solid or semi-solid material which is surrounded by a cover or a bag made of at least partially permeable textile material and is present in the form of a compact three-dimensional body and contains the textile auxiliary, whose melt or Softening point is in the range of the dry temperature.
Examples of fully fashioned textiles which can be treated according to the invention are new stockings, sweaters, bed sheets, bed covers, towels, woven and non-woven small carpets, felt sheets and the like.
As textile auxiliaries, in addition to antistatic agents and plasticizers, u. a. also consider perfumes.
A dispensing device is preferably used, only part of which is permeable, so that the textile auxiliary can escape from the dispensing device when it has been softened by the heat developed in the dryer. For example, an antistatic agent in the form of a bar, e.g. B. a soap bar can be used, which is contained in a fabric cover that tightly encloses it. This fabric cover is preferably attached to the front of one of the ribs which protrude into the dryer and are part of the drum wall of the dryer. This bar made of antistatic agent has a softening or melting point which is in the range of the dryer temperature.
When the textiles to be treated are circulated in the heated dryer drum, antistatic agent leaks through the fabric cover and is transferred to the textiles to be treated.
The present invention is based on the knowledge that you can achieve the desired properties of fully fashioned textiles, such as antistatic properties, if the textiles in a drum dryer with a very small amount of a textile auxiliary, such as an antistatic agent, which can be used several times Form is available, treated.
In the drawing, an embodiment for the practical implementation of the invention is shown, namely shows:
Fig. I a front view of a drum dryer,
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a fabric dispenser filled with textile auxiliary which is suitable for carrying out the present invention.
FIG. 3 shows a section according to t inic 4 3 through the device of FIG. 2 in an enlarged scale compared to FIG
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another embodiment of a dispensing device.
In Fig. I a drum dryer I is shown, which has a heat source, not shown, which is operated electrically, with gas or in some other way. The dryer 1 is also provided with a rotatable drum 2 and a suction line or some other outlet 3. On the front side of the dryer housing is a door 4 with a lock 5 through which the interior of the dryer or the drum is accessible.
The drum 2 usually contains a vietzah) of ribs 6 which extend inward from the outer wall of the drum 2 and run essentially parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum 2. Although the drum 2 can be rotated in any direction, it is assumed in the present case that the drum rotates clockwise as seen in FIG. 1.
On the front side of one of the ribs 6 lying in the direction of rotation, a dispensing device 7 is attached, which is intended to dispense a textile auxiliary onto bare) tumbled textiles 8 that are overturned in the drum 2. C) bwolll hl Fig. I only one dispensing device 7 is attached to the front of one of the ribs 6, it is also possible to attach several such dispensing devices 7 to a single rib 6 or also to different ribs 6.
Although it is theoretically possible to roll or toss the dispenser 7 with the textiles 8 in the drum, i. H. Not attaching the dispensing device 7 to the drum, by attaching the dispensing device 7 to the drum 2, the disadvantage of having to look for the dispensing device from the dried textiles and return it to the drum after the end of each drying process is avoided .
Many other arrangements of the dispensing device 7 on or in the drum 2 are also possible in order to change the amount of the materials dispensed in each case or to enable adaptation to the various dryer types, dryer makes, temperatures, drying processes, etc.
In operation, textiles 8, which are usually damp and are to be dried, are placed in the drum 2 and then tossed or tumbled in the same by rotating the drum 2. In this way, the textiles 8 are repeatedly brought into contact with the surface of the dispensing device 7 intended for the dispensing of the textile auxiliary. The heat developed in the dryer I softens the textile auxiliary so that it is transferred to the textiles 8 through contact between the overturned textiles 8 and the delivery surface of the delivery device 7.
It was fcstgestelit that after using a dispensing device, which z. B. consists of a cloth sheath or a bag, one or more work cycles long favorable antistatic properties are achieved if only dry textiles are circulated in an unheated dryer.
This is presumably due to the fact that textile auxiliaries, which are located on the outside of the dispensing device, are transferred to the textiles through abrasive contact.
Details of the dispensing device 7 used in FIG. 1 can be seen in FIGS. 2 and 3. As these figures show, the dispensing device 7 consists of a bag or an outer hut 9, at least a part of which must be permeable for the textile auxiliary material accommodated in it in the form of a bar or some other solid mass. It is expedient and economical to manufacture the cover 9 from fabric or nonwoven. A cotton Polvester fabric with a Koper weave, e.g. E3. a Dacron fabric is particularly suitable for this purpose.
In the sheath 9 there is a rule lao made of solid or semi-solid material that contains or consists of a textile auxiliary. This bar 10 has a melting or softening point which is in the range of the drying temperature, as will be explained in more detail below.
On one side of the dispensing device 7, a bracket for attaching the dispensing device 7 to one of the ribs 6 of the drum 2 is attached. As FIG. I shows, this holder consists of a textile band with hooks 11 and a textile band with loops 12 which can interlock (Velcro fastener, surface zip fastener). The tape 11 is preferably attached to a double-sided print adhesive tape 13. On the other hand, it is also possible that part of the fastening for the dispensing device 7 is attached in the drum 2. Any type of bracket can also be used, for example a snap pin! tion, can be used. which makes it possible. the dispensing device 7 to be easily attached to the drum and to 16sen from the same again.
A modified embodiment of the dispensing device is shown in FIG. As shown in this exemplary embodiment, the dispensing device again has a permeable hulule 9 which at least partially surrounds a bar made of textile auxiliary material that is softened by the influence of heat. This bolt contained in the sleeve 9 is fastened in a holder 14 by means of a clamping spring 15. The holder 14 can be fastened to the inside of the drum 2 with the aid of further holding elements (not shown).
The textile auxiliaries which can be used according to the invention are chemicals which improve the properties of textiles, in particular antistatic agents, and which can be shaped into a bar which softens when it is exposed to the heat prevailing there in a tumble dryer.
Liquid textile auxiliaries are not suitable for the present invention, unless. they are either used for impregnating or coating a neutral carrier, which is a solid which can be softened under the influence of heat, or they can be converted into a suitable gel.
A particularly suitable class of textile auxiliaries comprises the quaternary ammonium salts. Preferably these quaternary salts are the chlorides and contain at least one and usually two C, 2- to C24-fatty acid residues, e.g. B. C, 8 residues. A preferred product is dimethyl di (hydrogenated tallow) ammonium chloride, which can be used alone or in a mixture with other chemicals.
If desired, two or more textile auxiliaries can also be mixed with one another. In addition, additives can be used to improve the deformability of the fabric aid into bars, to change the softening point of the bar, and to control the rate at which the fabric auxiliaries penetrate through the permeable surface of the dispenser.
A particularly useful mixture of textile auxiliaries is a mixture of stearyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride and dimethyl-di- (hydrogenated tallow) -ammonium chloride in a weight ratio of 2 to 4: 1.
The bars containing a textile auxiliary must have a melting or softening point which is in the range of the working temperature of the dryer. It is convenient for the bar to have a wide melting range; H. when the bar melts or softens over a wide temperature range instead of having a sharply defined melting point. For many drum dryers, bars with a melting range of at least 1 () C, preferably at least 20 C, are preferred. The optimum melting point for such bars is currently in the range of 50 to 90 C.
Typical known textile auxiliaries such as dimethylditallowammonium chloride, stearyldimethylbenzylammonite chloride and coconut monoethanolamide are not advantageous when used individually, but are particularly useful for the purposes of the invention when used in combination to achieve a wide range of softening.
Dimethylditalgammonium chloride has a softening range that extends from 135 or 139 C down by 5 to 9 C, but under no circumstances does it soften below 90 C or even below 12S C. Stearyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and coconut monoethanolamide have sufficiently low softening ranges, but they are not broad enough. The softening ranges of these two textile auxiliaries extend from 62 to 66 C and approx. 64 to 66 C.
On the other hand, a mixture of these three textile auxiliaries, as used in Example I, shows the following softening behavior: weak sintering begins at approx.
50 C, beginning partial melting at approx. 60 C, approx.
50% melted at 65 C, transition to a non-flowable gel-like mass at 70 C: this gel-like mass does not completely change to the liquid state over a wide temperature range (up to at least 100 C).
A reasonable transition to the liquid state at temperatures in the range from 50 to 90 C appears to be unfavorable. since the textiles can then be soiled or stained, while at a high softening point, e.g. B. over 90 C. no effective transfer to the textile material and therefore no satisfactory finishing effects occur.
The invention is illustrated by the following specific examples. Unless otherwise stated, all parts and percentages are based on weight.
Example 1
72 parts of stearyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride (melting point 59 to 65 ° C.), 25 parts of dimethyl-di- (hydrogenated tallow) -ammonium chloride (melting point 139 to 144 ° C.) and 3 parts of coconut monoethanolamide (melting point 62 to 65 ° C.) were in Powder form mixed together to form an intimate mixture which had a melting range of 53 to 85 ° C.
Two pieces of a white fabric with a twill weave, which consisted of 65% polyester (Dacrons) and 35% cotton, with dimensions of 7 x 7 cm were cut to size. A strip of textile tape with hooks (Velcro) was sewn onto the center of one side of one of these pieces of fabric. The back of the associated textile tape with loops (Velcro) was provided with a double-sided adhesive pressure strip. The exposed side of the pressure-sensitive adhesive strip was covered with a removable paper strip in order to preserve the adhesiveness of the adhesive strip until the loop tape is to be glued into the dryer or drum of the same.
Then the two pieces of fabric were sewn together on three longitudinal edges so that the Velcro tape was on the inside, whereupon the resulting hulule was turned. 8 to 10 g of the textile auxiliary mixture were then poured into the turned-over and only one side open envelope. whereupon the cover was finally sewn up. The filled casing was then heated in a hot air oven to a temperature of 105 to 11 () C so that the textile auxiliary was heated and melted together. After cooling, the contents of the casing consisted of a flat hard bar that adhered to the walls of the casing surrounding it.
Then the direction of rotation of the drum of a laundry dryer was determined by closing the door of the dryer, switching on the drum briefly and then opening the door again and observing the direction of rotation of the drum.
The front side (in the direction of rotation) of one of the ribs protruding into the drum was selected for attaching the dispensing device just described. The area provided for attaching the dispenser was then cleaned with water and rubbed dry. Then the protective paper was removed from the adhesive tape located on the back of the dispenser, whereupon the dispenser was pressed firmly against the relevant rib of the drum approximately in the middle area of the same (based on the length of the drum) in order to attach the dispenser firmly there. The dispensing device was also attached to the rib in such a way that the edge of the dispensing device 7 facing the axis of rotation of the drum was close to the inner edge of the relevant rib of the drum, but did not protrude beyond this inner edge.
The Velcro fastener was then loosened by lifting one corner of the bag forming the dispensing device until the bag was completely detached from the loop tape. The portion of the attachment remaining on the rib, i.e. H. the loop tape with the adhesive tape was then firmly attached to the drum by pressing again with the fingers. Then the pouch of the dispensing device was reattached to the loop tape, making sure that the loop tape and the hook tape were exactly on top of one another.
A normal amount of wet fully fashioned fabric was then placed in the dryer and dried in the usual manner. After the fabrics were removed from the dryer, they were tested for static electricity and sticking by AATCC Procedure 115-1965 T (American Dyestuff Reporter, May 8, 1967).
The results were excellent; H. no electrostatic charge or other sticking was found.
Repeated tests were performed using a pad of 76.2 x 228.6 mm pieces of nylon tricot and a blend of 65% dacron and 35% cotton for the dryer. The dryer was set to operate for 60 minutes. The electrostatic charge was examined after each work cycle by observing the sticking together and the jumping or crackling of electrical discharges. Control tests, in which the plasticizer and antistatic agent were omitted, resulted in electrostatic charging, which was evidenced by sticking, entanglement and visual electrical discharges.
In contrast, fully fashioned textiles that had been dried in a dryer with the dispensing device described above showed no electrostatic charge and no tendency to hang together or stick together, even after 75 washing and drying processes. The antistatic and softening of the textiles according to the invention also did not determine the water absorbency, as determined by the method described in JAOCS 42, 1084 (December 1965). impaired. In contrast, the water absorbency is adversely affected by customary branded products of softeners for textiles on an aqueous basis, which are used in the rinsing water of the washing process.
Example 2
This example compares the antistatic properties of fully fashioned textiles treated in a dryer with the product from Example I with the antistatic properties of textiles treated in machines with three branded products for softening and antistaticizing textiles.
Conventional antistatic agents for textiles, which simultaneously soften the textiles, are used in liquid form and added to the textiles during the rinsing process of the washing process. Such agents for softening textiles tend to impair the water absorbency of textiles after repeated use.
In the present example, the antistatic properties of various fabric softening agents were compared using 76.2 x 228.6 mm pieces of nylon tricot fabric, the results being observed before and after by rubbing the fabric with a nylon tricot block. The test method used was AATCC 115-1965 T (American Dyestuff Reporter, May 8, 1967). The results obtained are shown in the table below. In each case, the special plasticizers were added according to the specific instructions of the individual manufacturers. Controls I and 3 were added during the rinse cycle and Control 2 during the wash cycle.

The relative moisture absorption was also determined in relation to textiles which had been treated with the softening agents from Example 2. The test method used was the rewet or moisture wicking test method described by Grim et al in JAOCS 42, 1084 (December 1965). The moisture absorption height was measured after 10 minutes.
The moisture absorption was after the washing and drying process for TwUilicn. those treated with controls I and 2 were poor. The moisture absorption of textiles which had been treated with control 3 was poor after the first washing and drying process. In contrast, the method of the present invention; H. the product described in example 1, surprisingly no noticeable impairment of the moisture absorbency.
It is assumed that when using the present invention only the surface of the textiles is coated with the textile auxiliary, while when using conventional products used in liquid form the cationic, textile softening agent is absorbed by or on all fibers of the fabric.
