<B> Process for manufacturing a condensation product </B> <B> and use of the product </B> thus <B> obtained </B> The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a product of condensation. This process is characterized in that at least one polyalkylene glycol of which the alkylene residues have a straight chain of two to four carbon atoms is condensed with at least one aldehyde. The product thus obtained can be used in particular for the treatment of paper with a view to stabilizing its dimensions.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the process, the polyalkylene glycol, preferably diethylene glycol, and the aldehyde, preferably formaldehyde, are heated in the presence of a strong acid catalyst and an azeo liquid. tropic like toluene, to facilitate water removal and facilitate condensation.
The condensation product of diethylene glycol and formaldehyde is a slightly viscous liquid at 250, completely soluble in many organic solvents such as toluene, benzene, xylene, etc., and completely soluble in water. water or miscible therewith. It is also completely stable under basic or neutral conditions such as in aqueous solutions.
In the following examples, the parts are expressed by weight <I> <U> Example 1 </U> </I> We mix

<tb> Toluene <SEP> <B>, <SEP> .... <SEP> ..... </B> <SEP> 20 <SEP> parts This mixture is heated to reflux, a collector of moisture being interposed between the flask and the reflux condenser. After evacuating the reaction mixture of 18 parts of water, it is heated under vacuum with stirring to remove the toluene. Under 20 mm mercury pressure and temperatures up to 150, volatile organic condensation products are not obtained.
The product thus obtained is neutralized by means of an extended solution of NaOH <I> at pH 7. </I> The product is completely soluble in water and in toluene. It has a faint ethereal odor and is slightly viscous. It does not give off the odor of forma under normal ambient conditions. Its molecular weight is 480 (Rast) and its hydroxyl equivalent is 220, which indicates that it has a linked polymer structure.
Its specific gravity is 1.155 to 34.50. Its refractive index is N = D 1.462.
The molecular weight and hydroxy equivalent of the condensation product of this example indicates that it has a polymeric structure containing on average four elements of di-ethylene glycol, as shown by the following formula.

It is also possible to prepare condensation products starting from dipropylene glycol, dibutylene glycols and higher dialkylene glycols, polyalkylene glycols, mixtures of these glycols or their mixtures with diethylene glycol which are active in the glycol. with regard to formaldehyde or other aldehydes, with formation of soluble or dispersible products in water, alone or with the aid of suitable adjuvants.
Polyalkylene glycols such as triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, etc. can also be used alone or in admixture with the dialkylene glycols mentioned above.
Polyols such as glycerin, pentaerythritis and sorbite can also be added to the alkylene glycols, in proportions of up to about 50 molecules per cent of the glycols, for the purpose of reaction with the aldehyde to form products soluble or dispersible in water.
Instead of the paraformaldehyde of the above examples, trioxane, methylal, aqueous formaldehyde and the like can be used which give formaldehyde. Instead of using formaldehyde, one can use other active aldehyde such as acetaldehyde, propanal, butanal, benzaldehyde, glyoxal,
terephthalic aldehyde and other dialdehydes containing not more than 8 carbon atoms in the monomeric state, or mixtures of these reactants, with a view to the formation of water-soluble or dispersible condensation products with the alkylene- glycols. The term “alkylene” is understood here to mean an aliphatic radical with two free valences, containing a straight chain carrying or not carrying substituents, said chain containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms and its free values being on contiguous or separate carbon atoms.
The process can be carried out so that the polymer chains of the compounds obtained are terminated in whole or in part by an alkyl radical having not more than 8 carbon atoms. It is possible, for example, to react together an aldehyde and a glycol in the presence of a small proportion of a glycol semi-ether acting as a chain blocker.
The following example illustrates this type of preparation.

To form the condensation products, it is preferable to operate in the presence of a strong acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid, alkanesulphonic and phosphoric acids, and halides with an acid reaction such as zinc chloride, chloride. stannic, aluminum chloride, acid clays, etc.
The azeotropic vehicle can be, instead of toluene, benzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, etc.
The acetal-type condensation products prepared in accordance with the invention can be applied to the finishing of textiles, the treatment of leather and the treatment of paper. They are applicable as hydraulic fluids and lubricants. They can also be used as embalming fluids, germicides, fungicides and in similar applications.
These acetal-type condensation products can be applied to fabrics, yarns or cellulosic fibers such as rayon and cotton, to stabilize the dimensions of the fabric, yarn or fiber and to oppose shrinkage under the influence of repeated washing.
As mentioned, the condensation product resulting from the implementation of the process of the invention can also be used for the treatment of paper with a view to stabilizing its dimensions. It is indicated below how this treatment can be carried out and what is the result thereof. Sheets of paper, of the type commonly used for the manufacture of waxed paper, were impregnated in the aqueous solutions specified in the table below. They were then dried for 15 minutes at 1570 C.
Markers 45.7 cm apart were established on a series of samples of the paper thus treated and these samples were exposed to 60% relative humidity at 210 ° C. for 2 hours. Further samples were suspended in an atmosphere of 95% relative humidity at ordinary temperature overnight.
After removing them from humid atmospheres, the samples were immediately measured and the following results were obtained.
