Fuel for internal combustion engines, process for producing the same and means for carrying out the process The use of lead compounds in gasoline for the purpose of increasing the octane number is. common, although there are several rather serious disadvantages with it. are connected.
One of these disadvantages, the deposition of various lead compounds in the combustion chamber of the engine, has been remedied at least in part by the use of hydrogen halide cleaning agents (Seavengers), such as ethylene dibromide. Another harmful effect attributed to the lead anti-knock agent is misfiring of the engine due to fouling of the spark plug. This pollution occurs quite frequently in engines that operate at high temperatures and is a very serious malfunction, especially in aircraft engines.
No satisfactory solution to this problem has yet been found.
It has now been found that propellants, which consist of hydrocarbons with the boiling range of gasoline and halogenated hydrocarbon cleaners, lead tetraalkyl and also a phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound of the type identified below, allow a significantly improved operation of the engines.
The use of the cleaning mixture consisting of a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and a phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound particularly reduces the contamination of the spark plug or at least prevents it to the extent that it is practically impossible when the engines are running. matters more. This advantage is obtained without the anti-spatter properties of the fuel being adversely affected by the cleaning mixture contained therein.
The subject of the present patent is a fuel for internal combustion engines, which consists of hydrocarbons with the boiling range of gasoline, which contain a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and lead tetraalkyl, and which is characterized by.
is that it also contains a phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound with at least one organic radical containing a cyclic group and bonded directly to the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth atom through a carbon atom, where the Ratio between the amount, expressed in theoretical units, of the halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and the amount, expressed in theoretical units, of the said phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound between 3:
2 and 100: 1.
The subject of the patent is also a process for the production of a fuel according to the invention, which is characterized in that one uses hydrocarbons. the boiling range of gasoline a halohydrocarbon cleaning agent and lead tetraalkyl and also a phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound with at least one containing a cyclic group, directly through a carbon atom to the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth atom added bound, organic residue in the molecule,
wherein the ratio between the amount, expressed in theoretical units, of the Ha logenkohlenwasserstoffspäuermittel and the amount, expressed in theoretical units, of said phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound between 3: 2 and 100: 1.
According to a special embodiment of this process, the fuel can be at least said phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound, or a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent, or a lead tetraalkyl, respectively. Mixtures of these connec tions also add immediately before combustion in the internal combustion engine.
The subject of the patent is also a means for performing the inventive method. This agent contains a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and a phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound with at least one containing a cyelic group directly. organic residue in the molecule bound by a carbon atom to the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth atom. in the quantitative ratio, expressed in theoretical units between 3: 2 and 100: 1.
These means for executing the method can also contain a lead traalkvl.
The term theoretical unit denotes, for a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent, the amount of this cleaning agent required to theoretically convert all of the lead present in the fuel into PbBr. or PbC12 is sufficient, while the term for the above-mentioned phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compounds denotes the amount required for the theoretical conversion of all of the lead present in the fuel into Pb3 (P04) 2, PbH4 (Sb04) 2 or PbH4 (Bi04) 2 is sufficient.
The halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agents contained in the fuels and agents according to the invention for carrying out the process include all cleaning agents of this type which are already known, eg.
B. Ethylene dibromide and ethylene dichloride, acetylene tetra bromide, hexachloropropylene, mono- and polyhalopropanes, butanes and pentanes and the mono- or polyhaloalkylbenzenes with. a vapor pressure of 0.1 mm to 100 mm Hg at 50 C. Mixtures of these Ha logenkohlenwasserstoffe, z. B. a mixture of ethylene dibromide and ethylene dichloride are used ver.
The eyclic groups in the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compounds used of the type described can be heterocyclic or earbocyclic, and the carbocyclic groups can be alicyclic, cycloolefinic or aromatic. The compounds with carboeyelis residues are preferred.
Of the compounds with aryl residues in the molecule, those with alkyl side chains on the aromatic rings are preferred over compounds with unsubstituted aryl residues.
The tertiary compounds, like the tertiary phosphines. Phosphinoxy de, phosphine sulfide and the corresponding antimony or bismuth compounds are preferred over the primary and secondary compounds, that is to say that the compounds, which three organic residues of the type mentioned on the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth atom contain, are preferred over the compounds in which the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth atom is connected to one or two hydrogen atoms.
Specific examples of the above-mentioned compounds are triphenylphosphine, tri- (dimethylphenyl) phosphine, tri- (dimethylphosphine oxide, cymylstibine and triphenyl bismuthine. The total amount of the halohydrocarbon cleaning agent contained in the fuel of the present invention plus the aforementioned phosphorus, Antimony or bismuth compound, is generally calculated according to the lead content of gasoline, approximately between 0.4 and 2 theoretical units, in particular between 0.6 and 1,
8 theoretical units. A preferred amount for aero engine fuels is. between 0.9 and 1.2 theoretical units and for vehicle gasoline between 1.1 and 1.7 theoretical units.
The quantitative ratio between the halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent -find the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound is important. If, for example, the content of halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent is too high, excessive wear due to corrosion of certain parts, for example on the exhaust valves and valve guides, is found. If too small an amount of the halogenated hydrocarbon cleaner is used, the lead deposits will not be effectively flushed out.
If too small amounts of the above-mentioned phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound are used, the spark plug utilization is not significantly reduced; if you use too much, on the other hand, the separation and contamination of the spark plug increase.
The ratio of the theoretical units of the halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound is between 3: 2 and 100: 1, especially between 3: 2 and 15: 1. The best results are obtained one with a ratio that falls between the limits 2: 1 and 15: 1 or in particular between 2: 1 and 9: 1.
The total amount of halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent plus said phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound and the quantitative ratio of these two components are preferably selected so that the amount of said phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound present in the fuel is about 0.01- 0.6, especially 0.03-0.4 and especially 0.05-0.3 theoretical units be.
The concentration of the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound in the fuel is preferably kept below 0.1% by weight. It should be noted that several halogenated hydrocarbon cleaners and several phosphorus, antimony and bismuth compounds can be used side by side, provided that the total amount of all compounds together is within the ranges mentioned above.
The present combination of a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaner and a phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound of the type described can be used in any leaded gasoline. are and is particularly important in connection with lead-containing fuels for piston internal combustion engines, especially aircraft engines of this type, which is related to the relatively common spark plug contamination and the associated high risk of death in engine malfunctions. However, the combination mentioned is also very effective in combating spark plug contamination in vehicle engines operated with leaded gasoline.
In addition to the lead-containing anti-knock agent, the halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compounds of the type mentioned, the fuels can also contain other additives, such as B. Oxidation and corrosion @ verhin reducing agents, stabilizing agents and dyes such.
B. 2,4-dimethyl-6-tert-butylphenol and other alkylphenols, N, N'-dibutpl-p-phenylenediamine, hydroquinone and phenyl-a-naphthylamine. Such other additives can also be contained in the means for carrying out the method.
The term leaded gasoline and similar expressions refer to petroleum distillates that are in the boiling range of gasoline (between about 10 and 230 C), to which a small amount, usually between about 1 and 6 cm3 per 3.79 liters, a tetraalkyl lead, e.g. B. tetraethyl lead has been added as an anti-knocking agent.
The fuel to which a phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound of the type mentioned is added in addition to tetraalkyl lead and a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent is preferably a fuel that is relatively stable with regard to oxidation and resin formation. The stability can be increased by using stable base stocks such as
B. alkylates, straight run petrol or other highly refined distillates to remove the olefins or be obtained by using oxidation inhibitors. A fuel is stable if it contains a maximum of 5 mg resin per 100 ems (determination according to ASTM method D-381-50) and a maximum of 10 mg resin per 100 cm33 after it has been exposed to oxygen pressure of 7 kg per cm2 for 16 hours has been subjected to accelerated aging.
It will be understood that the amounts of resin mentioned refer to the fuel before adding the non-volatile additives, e.g. B. the said phosphorus, An timon or bismuth compounds has been added.
The term aero engine gasoline refers to a high quality gasoline for use in aircraft engines, as distinct from lower quality gasoline or motor vehicle gasoline. Aero engine gasoline has a sharper be limited boiling range, usually between about 38 and 175 C. The octane number of such fuels usually exceeds 100. As a result of the high quality required. Thermally cracked distillates are never used for aircraft engine gasoline.
Catalytic cracked distillates can sometimes be used, but only after the olefins have been removed from them. One of the reasons for the restrictions on the incorporation of cracked gasoline in aviation gasoline is the fact that the oxidative stability of these gasoline must be much greater than that of the common gasoline.
The following example illustrates the present invention. Example A Franklin 4 AC-176 engine was used in mock travel conditions. lean mixture and operated every half hour for a period of 5 minutes in idle with rich mixture, whereby the attempt was accelerated. The time to clogging of the spark plug, as evidenced by the occurrence of misfire, was determined.
The fuel used was a 1001130 aero-engine gasoline, which contained 4 cubic meters of tetraethyl lead per 3.79 liters and a mixture of 1 theoretical unit of ethylene dibromide and 0.2 theoretical units of a phosphorus compound. The specific type of phosphorus compound used in each experiment is. indicated in the first column of the table below. The second column of the table mentions the percentage increase in the time to spark plug wear, which with. the various phosphorus compounds.
As can be seen from the table, a considerable percentage increase in the time to spark plug contamination was obtained with all of the phosphorus compounds examined.

So you can, for example, the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound of the type mentioned züi. add to a gasoline that already contains an anti-knock agent and a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaner. Likewise, a tetraalkyl lead, a halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and one of the above-mentioned phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compounds can initially be mixed, stored and handled as a concentrated mixture. and later added to the gasoline.
Under certain circumstances, it may be practical to mix the halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent and the said phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound in the corresponding proportions desired and the mixture with it. or to handle and store without stabilizing agents, agents preventing oxidation and corrosion etc. as a cleaning agent mixture for later addition to lead tetraalkyl or petrol containing lead tetraalkyl.
As has already been indicated, according to a special embodiment of the method for producing the fuel according to the invention, the fuel can be generated in the internal combustion engine itself. The phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound of the type mentioned, separately from the fuel, can be brought directly into the combustion zone of the engine. This can possibly take the form of a mixture of the said phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound with tetraalkyl lead.
The phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound can also be injected directly into the air intake of the engine separately from the fuel, either batchwise or continuously.
The halogenated hydrocarbon cleaning agent can also be injected separately from the fuel and either separately from or simultaneously with the phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compound of the type mentioned, directly into the combustion zone or into the air inlet.
You can also inject the tetraalkyl lead alone or in the form of a mixture of tetraalkyl lead, halogenated hydrocarbon cleaners and phosphorus, antimony or bismuth compounds of the type mentioned, separated from the fuel, into the engine.
The use of corresponding arsenic compounds for the purposes of the present invention is. excluded on the basis of Art. 486 Para. 4 (version of April 22, 1955) of the Ordinance on the Trade in Foodstuffs and Utensils.
