Bearing with fluid friction The bearings of the Mitchell type, comprising oscillating guide and suspension cradles, are well known.
These bearings have been improved by the addition of a hydraulic device which makes it possible to maintain the cradles under a certain pressure which ensures the formation of convergent lubricating films.
These bearings, which work very well, are expensive and consume a certain amount of power. The present invention relates to a fluid friction bearing; it is characterized in that at least one of the guide and support cradles is radially displaceable under the action of at least one spring.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a section perpendicular to the axis of the bearing.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 1.
In fig. 1, -an outer sleeve 1 carries three cradles 2, 3 and 4. In this case, this is an admissible minimum for a bearing. In general, we will choose an odd number of cradles, for example. five, seven, etc., in which there will be three, respectively four radially movable cradles. These cradles 2, 3 and 4 can oscillate weakly on cylindrical rods 5, 6 and 7 which are housed in grooves of the sleeve 1 obtained by broaching. In the cradles, these grooves are milled.
The cradle 2 can be moved radially by means of a spring 8 which acts on the notched plugs 9 and 10 and on the rod 5, consequently on the cradle 2.
The pressure of the spring 8 must be greater than the greatest radial force to which the shaft is subjected. Thus, the shaft 11 is held rigidly, without play; its speed creates continuous concentric films producing very strong radial pressures which force this shaft to constantly assume a centered position.
The initial pressure of the radially displaceable cradle being very high, its supporting surface must be sufficient so that the specific pressure at start-up is not sufficient to break the initial film of the lubricant.
This condition is greatly facilitated by fixing inside each cradle, between two shoulders machined therein, a thin blade 12, made of a material with a low coefficient of friction, nylon for example.
This bearing can operate either with a pressurized fluid or without initial pressure. The fluid is brought in or the bearing is filled via a channel 13. When the bearing operates without prior pressure, it is filled with lubricant to a level placed on the extension of channel 13, not shown in the drawing. In this case, the bearing is hermetically closed by a known positive device which comprises a ring 14 adjusted by a notch 15 in the outer sleeve 1 (FIG. 2). An outer ring 16 presses a washer 17 of celoron (registered trademark) or nylon, against the ring 14.
The free inner part of the washer 17 rests against a polished cone of a sleeve 18 and thus ensures closure.
The parts 14, 16 and 17 are fixed by "screws 19 to the ring 1.
The bush 18 is fixed to the shaft 11 so as to be able to be displaced axially in order to tighten the inner part of the washer 17 more or less.
The axial shoulder of the shaft is against the rings 14 and 14 '.
A hole 21 gives access to a screw 20 for fixing the spring 8.
