The present invention relates to an engine gas generator, characterized by at least one combustion chamber supplied with combustion air through the nozzle of an ejector device, and by a steam generator device connected to a nozzle of the ejector device by means of a device for controlling the flow of steam arranged so that the steam, which constitutes the working fluid of the ejector device, is sent by successive jets through the nozzle into the nozzle of the ejector device.
It is known that an ordinary ejector fed by a continuous jet of steam has the disadvantage of a rather low efficiency, because the entrainment of the air is produced, mainly by friction and viscosity.
By making the steam flow pulsating, a much better use is made of the energy contained in the steam to produce the compression of the air and, therefore, all other things being equal, a higher final pressure of the air. This is due to a certain stratification of the successive bursts of vapor with the masses of air which they entail.
In a particular embodiment, the generator could constitute the generator of gas engines of a jet thruster comprising a mechanical compressor. In this case, the pulsating steam jet would perform only part of the compression. In another embodiment, the generator could constitute a ramjet, which would then be capable of giving thrust at the fixed point. In yet another embodiment, the generator could be used to power a stationary or vehicle gas turbine.
The drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic axial sectional view of a first embodiment constituting a statoreactor.
Fig. 2 is a schematic sectional view of a device for controlling the pulsating steam jet of this embodiment, and FIG. 3 is a schematic axial sectional view of a gas turbine reaction propellant, provided with several generators in accordance with the second embodiment.
In the ramjet shown in FIG. 1, atmospheric air is admitted through an orifice 1 opening towards the front of the propelled mobile. This air, which is animated during the flight of a certain speed (relative wind speed) undergoes first in a nozzle 2, of a shape adapted to the speed of the flight (divergent shape on the sinus), a compression with decrease in speed. It then passes into the combustion chamber 3 through the nozzle 4 of an ejector device which increases its pressure and which operates under the effect of a jet of steam escaping from a nozzle 5 placed in the axis of the nozzle.
The combustion chamber 3 com carries an injector 6 through which liquid fuel is injected into this chamber to be burned there. The mixture of air and combustion gas is finally expanded in a nozzle 7 opening towards the rear of the propelled mobile so as to provide the propulsion jet.
The steam supplying the nozzle 5 of the ejector is obtained in a bundle of water vaporization tubes placed in the combustion chamber 3 and shown in the drawing in the form of a coil 8. This bundle is supplied. in water by means of a pump 9 drawing water from a tank 10, said pump being able to be driven, for example by an electric motor at the fixed point, then by a small propeller moved during flight by the relative wind.
The wall of the combustion chamber is provided with a jacket 11 with a helical circulation partition 12, so that the water coming from the pump 9 will undergo a first heating before entering the ventilation bundle 8 , this arrangement making it possible to recover the waste heat through the wall of the combustion chamber.
A control device 13 is placed on the path of the steam upstream of the nozzle 5, which periodically interrupts the steam jet, thus giving this jet a pulsating character. From there it follows that the steam escapes from the nozzle 5 in successive puffs. In the interval between two puffs, the atmospheric air which fills the nozzle 4 and the next puff of steam pushes this air towards the combustion chamber.
A valve could be provided, making it possible to stop the injection of water vapor and to put the ramjet to its ordinary operating regime, as soon as take-off is carried out and the speed of the airplane has become sufficient. In this way, water consumption can be reduced.
The device 13 (fig. 2) comprises a cylindrical casing 14 interposed on the pipe 5a of the nozzle 5, the two sections of this pipe being connected by flanges with two opposite orifices 15 of said casing. In the housing 14 moves a lapped rod 16 (provided where appropriate with sealing rings) driven in a reciprocating movement by the eccentric button 17 that a motor not shown rotates in a continuous movement around it. an axis 18.
The end of the rod 16 carries a slide 19 in which the eccentric button moves. The rod 16 is provided with a groove 20 which, in the reciprocating movement of this rod, is placed either outside the space between the two orifices 15, as shown in FIG. 2, then interrupting the flow of steam, or, on the contrary, in this space by allowing the nozzle 5 to be supplied with steam.
Good performance of the pulsating ejector device can be obtained by making the groove 20 a width smaller than that of the ports 15 of the housing, so that the times during which the groove is only partially uncovered are small compared to the times. during which the throat is completely exposed.
In some cases, it will be preferable that the time interval between successive puffs is greater than the time interval covered by the same puff. This can of course be achieved by properly arranging the groove on the rod 16.
The control device shown in fi-. 2 is provided with means making it possible to vary the shape of the diagram representing the flow of steam as a function of time. The casing 14 is gently slidably fitted at 14a in the fixed head 14b containing the disc carrying the eccentric button. A nut 14c carrying two threads with reverse pitch 14d and 14e respectively engaged with corresponding threads of the housing 14 and of the head 14b enables the housing 14 to come out more or less from said head.
The control device 13 could also include a disc rotating with continuous movement in a plane perpendicular to the tube 5a of the nozzle 5 between two sections of this tube and carrying a series of holes aligned on a circumference. These holes pass between the two sections of the tube 5 in the rotation of the disc.
The jet thruster shown in FIG. 3 presents several engine gas generators similar to that described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, the ejector devices of which are supplied with air by a mechanical compressor 21 driven by a gas turbine 22. Thanks to the mechanical compressor 21, the pulsating steam jet ejector device performs only part of the compression air. The gas turbine 22 is fed by the mixture of gas and steam leaving the combustion chamber 3. This turbine is used to drive the compressor 21, but it goes without saying that this compressor could also be driven, for example by a piston engine.
