Sämtliche Kolben laufen also synchron.
Free piston engine The present invention relates to a free piston engine of the type which has a cylinder and a free piston unit and which is operated by burning fuel in said cylinder. Such a machine, which can be used as a compres sor or propellant gas generator, is particularly suitable for the delivery of fuel gases with or without compressed air to gas turbines, power plants or compressed air to air turbines or power plants with steam and gas turbines.
The main purpose of the invention is. the creation of an improved design for such a machine.
Usually reciprocating compressors with crankshafts and connecting rods are connected to a separate energy source, so that the system is not only heavy and expensive, but also has a variety of other components. The invention also aims to reduce the weight and construction costs of compressors.
Free piston compressors with internal combustion and propellant gas generators of well-known design have two primary reciprocating piston units, each consisting of a large and a small piston, which are rigidly connected to one another, with all four pistons axially directed towards one another. The two small pistons work in a common cylinder, while the large pistons each work in an associated cylinder; combustion usually occurs between the small pistons.
A small piston is directly coupled to an associated large piston and the piston pairs are connected to one another in such a way that the piston units run back and forth in phase in opposite directions, namely away from each other through the combustion and through the combustion in the large cylinders sealed air are pushed against each other. Through one-way valves and openings in the cover of one or the two large cylinders, compressed air can be let out for further use, or be let into the smaller common cylinder in which the combustion takes place.
The known free-piston compressors are freed from some of the disadvantages that are inherent in turbo compressors, but they ensure that they run smoothly. For this purpose, certain proportions must be selected in the size of the large and small cylinders, which make it impossible that these cylinders are only dimensioned from the standpoint of the required compression.
Another disadvantage of this type of compressor is that only one of the large cylinders can be used to compress air that can be used outside the compressor, while the other large cylinder has to serve as an air cushion to make the barrel evenly, if not a special air cushion cylinder should be provided.
To achieve a. To run smoothly, it is also necessary that the cylinder that delivers the air to be used outside has a large dead space. has, which does not necessarily have to have a bad effect on the overall efficiency, but on the performance of the compressor, so that it must be built larger for a given performance.
In order to achieve smooth running, it is also advisable to reduce the amount of fuel burned in the small cylinder, which in turn results in a reduction in the performance of the compressor. This, together with the use of slow-acting one-way valves, leads to a reduction in the permissible operating speed of the compressor and thus a further reduction in the achievable performance. Taking all these factors into account, it was decided to build rather cumbersome free piston compressors or propellant gas generators, which are often not suitable for gas turbine power plants.
In addition, changes in the accepted performance often cause those in the compression ratio, which of course reduces the efficiency.
The purpose of this invention is to create a free piston machine in which some or all of these disadvantages are largely reduced or even eliminated.
The subject of the invention is a free piston machine, with a pair of cylinders in which coupled free piston units alternately perform compression and work strokes, characterized in that the arrangement is made so that while a work stroke takes place in one cylinder and another in the other Compression stroke takes place, and that further compressed gases from the cylinder are discharged from each piston unit, while the energy of the gases remaining in the cylinder is used to carry out a compression stroke in the other cylinder. The compressed gases vented from the cylinders can be air with or without the admixture of combustion products.
A preferred embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is characterized by a pair of adjoining cylinders, a pair of free pistons in each cylinder, a connection of the outer or inner piston of one cylinder with the corresponding outer or inner piston of the other cylinder, so that the Corresponding pistons move with one another, the arrangement being such that while a working stroke takes place in one cylinder, a compression stroke takes place in the other cylinder, and also by means for introducing fuel into the cylinder.
The accompanying drawing shows some exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention.

The power plant shown in Fig. 1 has an axial turbocompressor 10, which feeds through a line 11 through a fan gas generator generally designated 12: The combustion products flow from the latter through a line 13 to a gas turbine 14, which via a shaft 15 the compressor 10 drives. The one from the turbine. 14 outflowing gases enter a gas turbine 16, which emits useful power via a shaft 17 and lets the gases flow out into the atmosphere at point 18.
Furthermore, air with or without combustion products flows from the propellant gas generator 12 through a line 15 a to a high-pressure turbine 19, which emits useful power via a shaft 20. The gases flowing out of this turbine are conducted through a line 21 into the line 13 and contribute to the drive of the turbines 14, 16. The shafts 17 and 20 drive a useful power transmission shaft 23 by means of a transmission 22. Instead of being connected to line 13 by line 21, the outlet side of the turbine could be connected to line 11 by line 24.
If desired, an intercooler 25 could be connected between the compressor 10 and the propellant gas generator. When the line 24 is present, an intercooler 26 can be switched on in the same. Under certain circumstances it is advantageous to arrange a combustion chamber 27 in the line 15a.
The propellant gas generator 12 shown in FIG. 2 has a pair of coaxial cylinders 30, 31, in each of which a pair of pistons 32, 33 and 34, 35 is arranged. The pistons 33, 35 are coupled together in such a way that they form a single double piston. The pistons 32 and 34 are coupled together by rods 36 fastened to them at the points 37. The cylinder unit also carries a rocker arm 38 at the point 39, which is connected to the piston 34 and the double piston 33, 35 by means of a link 40. In this way it is achieved that when the pistons 32, 33 approach one another, the pistons 34 and 35 move away from each other, and vice versa, and that in phase.
The wall of the cylinder 31 is provided with a number of slots 41 which open onto an inlet ring chamber which is in communication with an inlet port 42. The wall of this cylinder 31 also has a number. of outlet slots 43 which are connected to an outlet nozzle 44 via an annular chamber. The same "applies to the inlet and outlet for the cylinder 30.
The line 13 from FIG. 1 is connected to the outlet nozzle 44 and, as mentioned, leads to the low-pressure turbine 14, while the line 11 is ruled out at the inlet nozzle 42.
Each of the cylinders 30 and 31 also has one outlet slot 45 for feeding the line 15a, i.e. the high-pressure turbine 19. Each of these outlet slots or the associated outlet channel is controlled by an outlet valve 46, the movable member of which is connected to a lever mounted on the cylinder unit 47 cooperates.
The gases exiting through the slits 45 act on both sides of the heads of the respective valve members, because of the jam in the line 15a; since the impingement surfaces on both sides of each valve member head are different in size, a differential thrust arises which has the endeavor to close the valve.
The levers 47 are arranged in such a way that when the pistons 32 and 34 move to and fro on the same cam members 48 with inclined surfaces temporarily act on the levers 47 and open the valves 46. Act. The outlet slots are located centrally between pistons 32, 33 and 34, 35.
The slots 41 and 43 are exposed when the pairs of opposing Kol ben have moved completely apart. The slots 41 let air. enter and the slots 43 allow air to exit along with combustion products. The inlet slots 41 may, if desired, be formed to impart tangential motion (i.e., twist) to the entering lift.
This air is delivered through the compressor 10 with only a slight overpressure and in a sufficiently large amount so that effective purging is guaranteed. The turbo compressor could be replaced by a piston compressor driven by the propellant gas generator pistons in the same cycle.
In the operating position according to FIG. 2, the pistons 34 and 35 are at the end of their working stroke and the fresh air entering from the connection 42 pushes the combustion gases through the connection 44. When executing their working stroke, the pistons 34 and 35 have moved the pistons 32 and 33 against each other. The latter are roughly closest to each other when the combustion in the cylinder 30 is initiated in the manner to be described, so that these pistons are pushed apart and thereby perform their work stroke and at the same time the pistons 34 and 35 collide with each other for the purpose of performing the compression stroke.
So it alternately take the piston pairs 32, 33 and 34, 35, the operating position shown in Fig. 2 a. At the end of each compression stroke, fuel is injected between the pistons in question and, according to the working principle of diesel engines, burns immediately.
It is ensured that the relevant valve 46 is opened during or immediately before the fuel injection so that a certain amount of air is released into the line 15a. This partial outlet is expediently carried out partially by piston movement and the fuel is injected into the cylinder as soon as the pistons move away from each other again. It is necessary that the energy inherent in the gases remaining in the cylinder after the partial exhaust and combustion is sufficient to carry out the subsequent working stroke in the relevant cylinder and the compression stroke in the other cylinder at the same time.
In other words, too much air must not escape from the partial outlet. For the propellant gas generator to run smoothly, it is also necessary that the work gained from a working stroke in one cylinder is approximately the same as that required to carry out the compression stroke in the other cylinder, which can be achieved in the following way: The valve 46 is opened in a certain intermediate position of the compression stroke and closed in the same intermediate position of the working stroke by means of the lever 47.
A certain amount of air is discharged approximately at the end of the compression stroke and combustion takes place approximately at the beginning of the working stroke. At the beginning of the latter, some air will mostly flow back into the cylinder through the open valve, but in a small amount because of the thermal expansion of the air already in the cylinder. Conversely, it can be achieved that this thermal expansion is sufficient to force a sustained outflow of air through the valve in this period zri.
In any case, when the valve is open, the pressure in the cylinder will remain approximately constant because of the connection with the line 15a, in which the pressure should remain constant. The arrangement is therefore to be made so that the valve opens in a certain intermediate position of the compression stroke and is closed in the corresponding intermediate position of the working stroke. Thus, the work corresponding to the two partial strokes is the same when the valve is open.
In addition, the pressure, volume and specific heat of the cylinder contents at the time the valve is opened are approximately the same as the corresponding values at the time the valve is closed; Therefore, the work to be done before the valve opening for the purpose of compression is approximately the same as the work to be gained after closing the valve on the working stroke. It follows from this that the total work to be gained on the working stroke is approximately the same as the work to be performed on the compression stroke.
To compensate for frictional losses, changes in specific heat and other secondary factors which influence the size of the working stroke of the pistons, suitable means, not shown, can be provided for setting the opening time of the valve 46, such that the opening shortly before or takes place after the point in time at which the pressure in the cylinder equals that on the other side of the valve. For example, the opening time of the valve can be advanced to the time at which the pressure in the cylinder is slightly lower than that in the line 15a ..
It then closes in a corresponding position in the working stroke so that the pressure in the cylinder remains slightly higher than when the valve was opened. This increases the work gained from the working stroke to compensate for the friction and other losses. Similarly, the delay in valve opening has the opposite effect, which means that changes in the specific heat of the cylinder contents can be compensated for.
This setting relates to the time of the opening of the valve with respect to the time at which the pressure in the cylinder becomes the same as the pressure in the line 15a and can take place, advantageously automatically, by setting the valve control or the pressure in the line. The latter setting can be brought about, for example by means of a throttle valve arranged in line 15a or by regulating the amount of fuel that is injected into the cylinder, and thus also the amount of air that is fed to the line.
If the above setting is unsatisfactory or if the stroke length of the pistons differs from that required for smooth running, the following two measures can be used to restore the required stroke length. There will be some throttling in the passage of air through the slot 45 and valve 46, thus also a certain pressure drop. If the stroke length is abnormally large, this throttling will reduce the return flow into the cylinder when the valve is open, reducing the work gained on the working stroke and thus also the subsequent compression stroke. This throttling effect can be increased by means which reduce the stroke of the valve.
Should the compression stroke be abnormally small, the outflow of air through the valve 46 will continue even after the start of the working stroke because of the thermal expansion of the air; the throttling effect mentioned will cause more air to remain in the cylinder than normal, deliver more work for the power stroke than normal and thus compensate for the shorter compression stroke. The throttling can be caused by the line through which the air. or the exhaust gases flow out. It is therefore up to you to automatically control the stroke length in such a way that it maintains the mean value required for smooth running.
Preferably, the point in the working cycle at which the injection of fuel begins should also be adjustable, namely in such a way that, with a normal stroke length, the combustion is ended as soon as the valve 46 closes. As described above, the combustion has the consequence that the air charge in the cylinder is reduced at the start of the working stroke. If the combustion is not already complete before the valve closes, more compressed air is retained in the cylinder and the continued combustion after the valve has closed automatically increases the work gained from your working stroke.
An additional factor which in extreme cases prevents the pistons from colliding with one another is the tendency of the pistons to cover the slot 45 when they approach one another at the end of the compression stroke.
In the arrangement just described, the propellant gas generator 12 is mainly suitable for releasing compressed air, which is preferred although fuel gases can also be mixed with the air. In any case, it is desirable that the temperature of these exhaust gases is not too high, particularly with regard to the discharge valves 46.
Although the pistons have been said to be free-floating, they can be kinematically coupled if multiple generator units are provided. Such as shown in Fig. 2 can be grouped and their pistons connected by a wobble disk drive so that they work in the correct order. The Kol ben are then also free-flying in their cylinders.
Another embodiment for the connection of the pistons of a unit is shown in FIGS. The aligned cylinders 30, 31 from FIG. 2 are here replaced by the cylinder sleeves 50, 51 of the cylinder unit having a jacket 52. The pistons 53 and 54 correspond to the pistons 32, 34 and are connected to one another by rods 54a. The Doppelkol ben 55 corresponds to the double piston 33, 35. Each of the pistons 54, 55 has an Ausnehniung 56 and carries a rotatable pivot 57, at the center of an arm 58 is attached, which extends through an opening in the cylinder jacket 52 to the outside.
A hollow shaft 59 rotates in bearings 60 which run parallel to the axis of the cylinder. Two pairs of cones 61 are attached to this shaft by means of sleeves 62 and wedges 63, on which, as shown in FIG. 5, rings 67 are pivotably arranged, which carry arms 58 which, thanks to the swashplate construction known per se, can rotate about the axis of the rings 67. Each of the arms 58 is fastened to a Tau melseheibe 64 by means of a retaining pin 65.
This rotates with the aid of roller bearings 66 on the ring 67 which, as shown in FIG. 3, is made up of two parts. The rings 67 are; as shown in FIG. 5, mounted on the pin 61 by means of bearings 68. An arm 69 on which a toothed segment 70 is arranged is attached to each ring 67. The segments 70 are in engagement with a bevel gear 71 or 72, which is firmly seated on a sleeve 73 which rotates in the bearing 60a and is rotatably arranged on the shaft 59.
The arrangement is such that any change in the inclination of the ring 67 with respect to the shaft causes the sleeve 73 to twist, so that the two B, inge always pivot by the same amount, but in opposite directions. The pistons, which move from one another and towards one another as in the previous embodiment, cause the shaft 59 to rotate thanks to the inclination of the rings 67.
In order to ensure a clean operation of the dew point disks and to avoid the occurrence of high-frequency vibrations @, but to allow the angles of inclination to adjust themselves, it is desirable to see damping in the rotation of the sleeve 73 with respect to the shaft 59 . This results in an annular space 73 between the sleeve 73 and the shaft, which annular space is filled with Drueköl, which reaches ge from a suitable pressure source through a line 76 in the hollow shaft and through a hole 75 in this annular space. A wedge 77 is attached to the sleeve 73 and a wedge 78 is attached to the shaft 59.
These wedges extend over the entire length of the annular space 74 and have only little radial play. So that the sleeve 73 can turn, the oil must flow past these wedges; In this way, there is a damping, the extent of which depends on the radial play. So it can be the angle of the rings 67. do not change quickly, but thanks to the slow change, the stroke length of the pistons can automatically adapt to the current running conditions. In this way, undesirable and over liquid stresses on the piston and the. Swash plates kept away.
The sleeve 73, which establishes the connection between the swash plates' rule, could of course be modified. For example, a pair of coaxial sleeves with coaxial bevel gears could be provided, which the latter would engage with toothed segments on a pair of arms that would be attached to one and the other ring 67.
and be on opposite sides to avoid imbalance. In addition, the bevel gears and toothed segments could be replaced by an arrangement in which the ends of the arms 69 would work together with radial projections on the sleeve or sleeves, in such a way that the intended movement can be carried over, which is to say that, for example, a pin could einrei fen into a groove.
The connecting rod pin 57 of the piston can be axially held in place by spring washers. The hollow shaft 59 carries a cam 79 which cooperates with the plunger 80 of a valve 81 which corresponds to one of the valves 46 of the previous embodiment. A similar valve on the other cylinder is controlled by a cam 79a. For the sake of clarity, the parts 80 and 81 are only shown in FIG.
The shaft 59 also carries a gear wheel 82 which drives pumps, not shown, which are used to inject fuel into the cylinders, this by means of injection nozzles, which are not shown, but mounted at point 81a and a corresponding point on the other cylinder will. If necessary, additional cams and valves can be provided.
The above-described Ausführungsimg'hat fol lowing advantages: It is a coordinated to the movement of the piston BE achieved rotary movement that is used to actuate the fuel. injection pumps and the drain valves can be used; In addition, the pairs of cylinders of the propellant gas generator are synchronized in a suitable manner. The rotary movement can also be used to drive auxiliary units such as cooling units. Lubricating or flushing pumps.
It goes without saying that correct control of the fuel injection and exhaust valves is important and should take place when the pistons are at the end of their stroke where their speed is moderate. The correct control is not determined by the position of the pistons in relation to the cylinders, but by the stroke portion that the pistons have passed through at the time in question. Since the stroke length can change depending on the operating conditions, a piston setting must be achieved in certain operating conditions that. is different than under other operating conditions.
The arrangement described above takes this into account by allowing the correct control of the fuel injection and the valves under various operating conditions. A preferred embodiment of the double piston 55 of the propellant gas generator according to FIG. 3 is shown in FIGS. 7 and 8. With it, it is no longer necessary to align the cylinder liners 50 and 51 exactly with one another.
The pivot pin 57 of the arm 58 is arranged in a support member 83 which is adapted to the shape of the double piston and on the ends of which the hollow piston heads 84-85 are pushed, leaving a radia len gap that allows the piston heads of to align itself with the corresponding cylinder liners 50 and 51.
The support member 83 has longitudinal recesses 86 in which corresponding protrusions 87 engage on the piston heads: the support member and the piston heads are held together by snap rings 88 which run in common annular grooves of these parts. The axial thrust of the cylinder heads is applied to the support member by means of suitable surfaces lying one on top of the other. transferred, the arrangement being such that neither an axial stroke resulting from the operating forces nor one resulting from thermal expansion is transmitted to the spring washers 88.
9 and 10 illustrate the manner in which propellant gas generator units of the type according to FIG. 3 are grouped and the piston units can be coupled to one another by a common swash plate gear. There are five Zylin dereinheit 90 are provided, each of which has a pair of abutting cylinders. As Fig. 10 shows, a pair of rods 93 interconnected outer pistons 91-92 -Lind a middle double piston 94 is net angeord in each Zylin.
The pistons 91 and 94 have trunnions 95 with arms 96 which are connected to swashplate drives 97, the latter being arranged on a common shaft 98. For each of the five units, largely the same construction is used. as in FIG. 3, but of course five arms 96 are connected to each swash plate designated 64 in FIG.
Cross-sections BB, CC, DD and EE in FIG. 9 would look the same as FIG. 10 with the exception of changes in the width of the outlet rina, chambers 100 and the inlet ring chambers 101 and the difference in the position of the Pistons in the cylinders.
The shaft 98 runs along the axis of the ring of cylinder units, rotates in suitable bearings and can be used to drive auxiliary units 99. All pistons therefore run synchronously. The outlet and inlet chambers 100 and 101 are connected to outlet and inlet lines 102 and 103, respectively, and the high pressure outlet line can be seen in 104. It is obvious that considerable space savings can be achieved with such an arrangement.
