C est un dispositif de réglage du shunt. E et E1 sont les indicateurs d'effort reliés à l'éprouvette, et E2 et E3 sont les indicateurs d'effort reliés à l'organe élastique;
Method for indicating the degree of plastic deformation of a material
and apparatus for carrying out this method
The present invention relates to a method for indicating the degree of plastic deformation of a material and to an apparatus for carrying out this method. Its main purpose is to indicate the test load applied to a sample of material, that is to say the load for which the plastic deformation of this sample equals a prescribed proportion of this length. The invention is intended to indicate the degree of plastic deformation of metallic materials and certain other materials having a large elastic deformation range.
An interesting property of some materials, especially metallic materials, is the stress at which plastic deformation becomes important. This property can sometimes be defined as the yield strength, but in many cases no well-defined yield strength appears. In these cases, it is customary to define this property by giving the test force in percent, that is to say the force for which the deformation of the material under load exceeds the deformation which would have occurred if the material had remained elastic, by the indicated percentage of the length over which the strain is measured.
The proof force is usually determined by a tensile test on a sample of the material, measuring the elongation against a reference length on the test piece and increasing the tensile loads, then recording the results. on a graph giving the elongation as a function of the load.
A line is then drawn parallel to the straight part, corresponding to the proportional elongation, of this curve, but this line is offset from said straight part by a distance which represents an elongation equal to the desired percentage of the reference length , which can be, for example, 0.1 or 0.2 / o. The test load is then obtained as being the load corresponding to the point of intersection of this line and the curve giving the elongation as a function of the load; the test force is calculated from the test load and the cross-sectional area of the test sample.
This way of doing it requires a lot of work, but it can be reduced to a certain extent by establishing the load: elongation curve with the help of high amplification recorders. These instruments, however, are expensive and in many cases it is still necessary to construct the offset line parallel to the straight part of the curve corresponding to the proportional elongation and to read the load corresponding to the point of intersection of this line and of the curve. In most cases, the load: elongation curve is needed only to determine the proof load and, therefore, could be dispensed with if the proof load could be determined exactly by other means.
The object of the present invention is to provide relatively inexpensive means for almost immediately indicating the degree of plastic deformation of a sample of material under load and in particular for determining its proof load.
The method for indicating the degree of plastic deformation of a material according to the present invention is characterized by applying a load to a sample of said material, applying a load proportional to an elastic member such as is not not deformed beyond its elastic limit during the application of this load, we connect the force indicators to electrical resistance respectively to the sample and to the elastic member, and we mount these force indicators in a bridge circuit in such a way that the degree of plastic deformation of the sample is indicated by the degree of unbalance of the bridge.
The apparatus according to the invention for carrying out the aforementioned method is characterized in that it comprises means for applying a load to a sample of said material, means by which a proportional load is applied to an elastic member such that it is not deformed beyond its elastic limit during the operation of the apparatus, of the electrical resistance force indicators connected respectively to the sample and to the elastic member, these force indicators being mounted in a bridge circuit, and means associated with said circuit for indicating the degree of plastic deformation of the sample.
In the following description of embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention given by way of example, reference will be made to the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of an apparatus for indicating the degree of plastic deformation of a material.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to FIG. 1 other devices, and
fig. 5 is a diagram of the electrical circuit of the apparatuses of FIGS. 1 to 4.
In the various figures of the drawing, the same reference signs relate to identical or corresponding elements.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, a test apparatus is seen comprising a loading shackle 11 of known type, intended to be connected to the means for applying the load of a machine for checking mechanical strength (not shown). The shackle 11 has a threaded bearing surface 12 intended to receive one end of a test tube sample 13 of the material to be examined. The other end of the test piece is screwed into another shackle. An extensometer 15 is mounted on the specimen 13 and includes a flange 16 which is subjected to high stresses, during loading, compared to those to which the rest of the extensometer is subjected.
Electric resistance force indicators E and E1 are fixed to the flange 16, and other force indicators E2 and E3 are fixed to a part subjected to high forces of the loading shackle II.
The force indicators E, E1, Ev and E are mounted in a bridge circuit and there is provided in this circuit a galvanometer or imbalance indicator, means (such as a variable resistor) to vary the response of the one of the groups of indicators, and a battery or other constant potential current source.
The loading shackle 11 has dimensions such that the maximum force in said shackle is less than its proportional limit under the maximum load applied to the test specimen, and consequently the response of the force indicators E2 and E3 as a function of the load is linear. The extensometer carries a negligible fraction of the load and the response of the force indicators E and EI which it carries is consequently proportional to the elongation of the test piece. The resistances of the bridge are adjusted according to the cross-sectional area and the modulus of elasticity of the specimen, so that the equilibrium remains unchanged as the load increases, as long as the elongation of the specimen is proportional to the load. Any lack of proportionality is then indicated by a deviation of the galvanometer.
The galvanometer scale can be calibrated as a percentage of the reference length of the extensometer, or a constant deviation of the galvanometer for elongations corresponding to various percentages can be obtained by means of a shunt.
A suitable relay can be incorporated to give a visible or audible indication when a prescribed percentage elongation is reached. Such a relay, if desired, can comprise an electronic device triggered by the unbalance current in the indicator circuit or, if a mirror galvanometer is employed, a photocell can be arranged to be actuated by the indicator. movement of the light spot coming from the galvanometer. A shaker and / or a light signal appearing on the dial of the testing machine, can be actuated by such means.
Fig. 3 of the drawing shows an apparatus in which the loading shackle 11 has an extended rod 17, and a second extensometer 18 is mounted on the rod 17. In this case, the force indicators E, and Es are attached to the flange 19 subjected to high forces of the extensometer 18.
Instead of using one of the loading shackles as an elastic member, another separate member can be used, or else the elastic member can be constituted by an extension of the sample wider than the latter, said member having a section such that it is not deformed beyond its elastic limit during operation of the apparatus. Fig. 4 shows an apparatus in which the test piece 13 is extended so as to provide a portion 20 of uniform section on which the second extensometer 18 is fitted.
The cross-sectional area of portion 20 is sufficiently larger than that of normal portion 21 of the specimen to ensure that portion 20 is not deformed beyond its elastic limit during application of the greater load on the sample.
Fig. 5 of the drawing shows the electrical circuit diagram of the devices described. In this figure, A and A1 are balancing resistors, A being variable, B is an adjusting device to vary the response of the indicators E2 and E3, D is a regulator of the supply voltage, V is a voltmeter , G is a galvanometer, S is a shunt, and
It is a shunt adjustment device. E and E1 are the force indicators linked to the test piece, and E2 and E3 are the force indicators linked to the elastic member;
During operation, the voltage is set to a constant value determined by device D, and the bridge is balanced by variable resistor A.
The load is slowly applied to the specimen and the adjuster B is adjusted until the spot of the galvanometer remains stationary as the load increases. The circuit is then rebalanced if necessary, again setting variable resistor A.
During this operation, the load should preferably not exceed about half of the value equivalent to the expected limit of proportionality of the test piece.
The load is continuously increased and the galvanometer deflection occurs when the elastic limit of the specimen is exceeded and plastic deformation begins. The reading of the load on the testing machine is noted when the deviation of the galvanometer reaches a determined value, corresponding to the elongation equal to the desired percentage, which value can be adjusted by means of the device C for adjusting the shunt.
The adjustment device B comprising two resistors located in two adjacent arms of the bridge and an adjustable connection connecting these two resistors is advantageous because its adjustment does not affect the sensitivity of the galvanometer.
