Process for the catalytic oxidation of acetone The present invention relates to a process for the catalytic oxidation of acetone.
In Swiss Patent No. 317892, of May 6, 1954, a process for the catalytic oxidation of acetone with oxygen in the liquid phase to a mixture of acetic acid, formic acid and formaldehyde, the oxidation products being removed from the reaction medium as they are produced. One embodiment of this process consists in introducing molecular oxygen and acetone into a heated liquid medium, consisting entirely or mainly of acetic acid, the medium in the latter case being the fraction boiling the highest of the products formed during the reaction obtained during a prior operation.
The acetic acid from the medium is partially eliminated by the excess oxygen, in particular when the operation is carried out at a temperature close to the boiling point of acetic acid under the chosen pressure, a variable amount of acetic acid being introduced at the same time as acetone to keep the volume of the reaction medium constant.
It has now been found that the process according to the aforementioned patent can be carried out in a particularly efficient manner by carrying out the oxidation of acetone in the presence of acetic acid and of an organic diluent other than the bodies formed during oxidation and which does not react under the operating conditions with any of the bodies present in the reaction.
The diluent may have a higher or lower boiling point than acetic acid. In the case of a diluent with a higher boiling point, a body having a low vapor pressure at the chosen oxidation temperature is preferably used, so that it is not removed with the products of the solution. oxidation. In this case, it suffices to introduce the total amount of diluent to be used at the start of the reaction. On the other hand, this body must be liquid at the chosen oxidation temperature and it must have a sufficiently low viscosity at this temperature to allow intimate mixing of the reaction medium with oxygen.
If diluents with a boiling point lower than that of acetic acid are used, these substances are entrained with the oxidation products and they will be added simultaneously with acetone, and if desired. , acetic acid, in the reaction apparatus.
As the body of the first category, there may be mentioned, for example, methyl phthalate and high-boiling hydrocarbons, etc. The substances of the second category include, for example, low-boiling hydrocarbons, such as cyclohexane, esters such as isopropyl acetate or ethers such as isopropyl ether.
The following examples illustrate the process of the invention.
<I> Example 1 </I> In an apparatus similar to that described in Example 1 of the aforementioned patent, 240 g of acetic acid, 175 g of acetone, 180 g of methyl phthalate and 7 are charged. g of Mn (NO ,;) '<I> 6 </I> aq. The mixture is heated to 900 and a stream of oxygen of 73 liters per hour passed through the mixture while countercurrently flowing 712 g of acetone and 62 g of acetic acid per hour.
After 6 a.m. 1/4 step, we obtained, after deduction of the quantities of acetic acid introduced and untransformed acetone
