Process for the treatment of semi-finished products made of metallic materials that are to be deformed In order to deform semi-finished products such as pipes, rods, strips, sheets, molded parts or generally profiles, for example to draw wires, the same must be subjected to a preparatory treatment.
The invention shows a way to he easier, accelerated and cheaper deformation.
It is known to use salt baths for annealing, tempering and descaling metallic materials. In order to remove the layer of scale from the surface, the materials are then pickled so that the surface becomes bright.
If semi-finished products are to be deformed, for example wires are drawn, the material is usually limed or leaded after pickling and then subjected to a deformation process. These measures must be repeated more often if a certain degree of deformation is to be achieved. In general, a glow process has to be switched on more than once.
It is also known to umzuwan deln the scale layer, which is present on hot-rolled material that is to be deformed, by treatment in a salt bath, that it forms a fine layer of Deek that allows the material to be pulled down using lubricants . This treatment takes place at temperatures between 300 and a maximum of 600 C.
In addition, it has also been proposed to subject semi-finished products with a bare surface directly to a salt bath treatment or, if necessary, to generate a scale on the bare surface beforehand using certain annealing conditions and to close the surface of the annealing material using a salt bath change so that a surface that is favorable for the deformation arises. The temperature of the salt bath is not even with this method. over 60U0 C.
The invention relates to. now a process for the pretreatment of semi-finished products to be deformed made of metallic materials using a salt bath, which is characterized in that the composition and temperature of the salt bath are selected so that a soft annealing and at the same time a transformation of the surface of the semi-finished product into a the inclusion of a lubricant suitable condition takes place.
It has been shown that when the method according to the invention is used, a total deformation of 96% and even more can be achieved, and that only a few intermediate anneals are necessary. In addition, this method has the advantage that it is possible to work with an increased deformation speed and the individual degrees of deformation or deductions can be made significantly larger, so that the number thereof is considerably reduced. Furthermore, there is also a considerable saving due to lower wear of the drawing tools.
The product deformed in this way is also characterized by a particularly smooth surface and good dimensional accuracy.
One can start from bare as well as from semifinished products covered with mill scale, such as wires that are to be drawn. As a rule, a temperature of the salt bath above 600 to about 1200 C must be selected to achieve the stated purpose, with the most favorable composition of the salt bath u. a. depends on the temperature. The most favorable temperature and composition of the salt bath also depends on the speed at which the annealing and conversion process is to be carried out, and also depends on the type of material and the thickness and nature of the lubricant base layer to be generated.
The salt bath can advantageously consist of halides or phosphorus salts or carbonates of the alkali or alkaline earth metals, borax or potassium or sodium hydroxides, individually or in the form of mixtures of these substances, which may contain active oxidants up to 20%, preferably 0.3 to 10%, the group of alkali and alkaline earth chlorates, peroxides, nitrates, bichromates, manganates and permanganates can be added. In addition, lime in amounts of 1 to 30%, preferably 5 to 15%, carbon, preferably in the form of graphite or talcum up to 15%, can be added individually or mixed with one another to the aforementioned salts or salt mixtures.
If temperatures between 600 and 800 C are to be used, the salt bath preferably contains sodium or potassium hydroxide or both as the main component. If the process is carried out at higher temperatures, the salt bath consists mainly of sodium carbonate or barium chloride.
The proportion of active oxidizing agents must also be adapted to the particular temperature, so that the higher the temperature selected, the smaller it is. The amount of active oxidizing agent also depends on the speed with which the surface transformation of the individual materials takes place. It may therefore be advantageous to completely refrain from adding the oxidizing agents.
The deformation of the semifinished product treated according to the invention can be carried out in such a way that both the size and the shape of the cross-section or the shape can be changed. The following types of deformation can be selected: drawing, rolling, pressing, deep drawing, extrusion, swaging and pressing. The deformation can be done cold or warm.
The method according to the invention is applicable to metallic materials and their alloys with the exception of those metals which melt at the salt bath temperatures in question, preferably to metals of the iron group, including nickel and cobalt and their alloys with one another and with chromium, manganese, molybdenum , Tungsten, vanadium, titanium, niobium, aluminum, silicon and copper, including stainless steels, which contain nickel and chromium, and alloys of nickel with chromium, which contain little or no iron,
also alloys of nickel with copper, copper and copper alloys. The process offers particular advantages in the case of materials that cannot be converted on the surface, or only with difficulty, by means of mechanical, chemical treatment. Examples 1.
