Molded product made of synthetic resin with a metallic appearance
Synthetic resin products with metallic appearance are already known. These known products either have a poorly adhering metal coating or they contain metal particles of such a size and shape that the mechanical strength of the synthetic resin is reduced and the synthetic resin object has only a slight metallic luster. In general, namely, the particle size and the shape of the metallic particles used were unsuitable for achieving a homogeneous product with satisfactory strength and gloss properties.
On the basis of tests it has now been found that the above disadvantages can be eliminated if the metal particles are sufficiently small and have a flaky nature. The scale-shaped. Metal particles show the tendency to align themselves in the surface layers of softened or liquefied synthetic resins or synthetic resin solutions parallel to the surface of the synthetic resin material. As a result, an object produced from such a mixture can acquire a strong metallic luster.
The molded product according to the invention made of synthetic resin with a metallic appearance is characterized in that it contains metal particles of microscopic size and flaky structure in a uniform distribution.
The product can also contain additives such as coloring substances, fillers, plasticizers, etc., individually or in combination.
The synthetic resin contained in the molded product may be thermoplastic. But it can also be thermosetting. Examples of synthetic resins suitable for producing molded products according to the invention are polyvinyl resins, poly ethylene resins, polystyrene resins and mixed polymer resins, and phenol-aldehyde resins, alkyd resins, urea resins and the like, that is to say synthetic resins that can be shaped.
As already indicated, the present invention is based on the knowledge that it is essential that the metal particles have a microscopic size and a scale-like structure, whereby good adhesion and a uniform distribution of the metal particles in the molded product is achieved. The metal particles used to achieve the metallic appearance, which can be produced in a manner known per se, can, for example, be those of aluminum, nickel, chromium, copper and other metals or metal alloys, such as e.g. B. bronze, be and z. B. have a particle size such that 98.5% of the metal particles pass through a sieve with a mesh size of 0.044 mm.
Apart from the requirement that they must be of microscopic size, their other order of magnitude is of subordinate importance. The shell-shaped structure of the metal particles, on the other hand, increases the adhesion of the individual particles to one another and together with the synthetic resin and, moreover, enables the particles to be distributed practically evenly in the synthetic resin.
The products according to the invention can be obtained by subjecting a synthetic resin, which contains metal particles of microscopic size and a scalloped structure in a uniform distribution, to a deformation operation.
The deformation can be carried out by ejecting the synthetic material from a nozzle, by pressing the synthetic material in molds, by injection molding and any other desired deformation process. In this way it is possible to produce any shaped product with a metallic appearance, for example rods, tubes, plates and also objects with more complex shapes. If a synthetic material that contains a thermoplastic resin as a synthetic resin component is shaped into a shaped body, for example into a rod, this can be made workable by subsequent heating and further shaped according to the desired purpose.
example
A synthetic material consisting of 94 total% of the branded product neon 201 (mixed polymer of vinyl chloride and diehloroethylene) and 6% by weight of flaky aluminum particles with a particle size such that 98.5% of the particles pass through a sieve with a mesh size of 0.044 mm pass, which are evenly distributed in the mass, is ejected from a press through a slot opening at 115 C in order to obtain a sheet-like structure with a metallic appearance.
The structure obtained in this way can be used for any purpose, e.g. B. as a table top, as cladding material, etc.
It is clear to a person skilled in the art that the proportions of synthetic resin to metal particles can be varied within a wide range, and that the most varied of shaped products, such as office equipment, toys, housings for apparatus, billboards, car parts, etc., can be produced by appropriate deformation.
