Mechanism for feeding a sheet of a machine to photographic composing The present invention relates to a feeding mechanism for a photographic composing machine, for example a photosensitive sheet onto which images can be projected photographically in a photographic composing machine to reproduce the text of a print, other typographic compositions or a pattern.
The photographic composing machine could be of the type in which, during the composition of a copy line, the sensitive sensitive sheet is kept stationary and is not advanced until after the completion of a composition line, so in presenting a blank portion of the sheet for the composition of a new copy line.
The object of the present invention is to provide a mechanism for controlling the precise position and movement of a support of the sensitive sheet relative to an optical system, during the passage of the sheet through the composing machine, and to ensure the precise alignment and registration of the projected images as well as the precise spacing of lines in the composition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism by which the support of the sensitive sheet can be readjusted or replaced to allow the photographing on the sheet of images or additional material whose models could not be included. suitably in the first composition, such images or additional material being photographed while exhibiting the correct alignment and register with respect to the material photographed during the first composition.
The mechanism which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a rigid cylindrical sheet support having devices to ensure the register of the sheet, and mounted for rotation in a housing forming a black chamber, a measuring device. , adjustable to determine the extent of each step-by-step rotation of the sheet support, drive means for the sheet support, and a device for periodically engaging said measuring device with said drive means for imparting rotary movement to the sheet support.
This mechanism can also be applied to machines for photocomposition, for example of headers, titles, decorations, fancy margins, lines or other typographic images, as well as to machines known in the art. typographic industry under the name of step and repeat machines.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism which is the subject of the invention applied to a photographic composition machine intended for the reproduction, from appropriate models or originals, of 5> copies or of texts in columns or in pages for books, magazines, newspapers or similar works.
Fig. 1 is a partial front view. Fig. 2 is a section, on a larger scale, by the line 11-11 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view, partially in section, of the mechanism shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, with a housing in which the foil support is mounted.
Fig. 4 is a front view, partially in section, of part of the mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the complete embodiment.
The embodiment of the mechanism shown in the drawing comprises a cylindrical sheet support A fixed on a shaft AI which can turn in bearings B ', the whole being con held in a box B-3 constructed in two parts B and Bl.
At each end, the support A is integral with a toothed ring A \ ', A3 respectively, the teeth of these rings meshing with toothed pinions A4 and A5 respectively (fig. 3 and 4) carried by a shaft A5, the ends of this shaft being able to turn in bearings if killed in the end walls of the lower half BI of the housing.
At the outer end of the shaft A6 is fixed a toothed wheel C with which a CI rack can grind. This (fig. 2) constitutes a part of a measuring device. which determines the exact extent of each angular movement of the sheet support A, and it can slide longitudinally over the horizontal part of a T-shaped Cz bar. The vertical part of the C2 bar can slide into a housing C'3.
The CI rack is connected to a C5 measuring bar which can slide longitudinally in C-9 consoles fixed to the frame of the machine. The extent of each angular movement of the sheet support A is determined by the adjustment of the measuring bar C5 and the CI crankset coupled therewith, relative to a drive cam F, and to allow this adjustment to be made within extremely precise limits, a CI index on the C @ co bar operates with a CI graduated scale on the frame of the machine (fig. 1 and 5).
The bar C5 and the CI rack are moved longitudinally by the cam F carried by a motor shaft D 'which also carries a cam D.
Initially, the bar C5, the rear end of which carries an eccentrically mounted CI- "roller, is held against the cam F by a spring CI'2, and the index Cl of this bar is aligned with the end of the IC scale which corresponds to the largest dot dimension of the images that the machine is capable of producing (fig. 1 and 5). In the case shown, the CIO scale is graduated for images ranging, for example, from 4 to 24 typographic points.
The CS bar is adjusted relative to the F cam and the CI scale by means of a C15 threaded rod which screws into a C15 nut on the end of the C bar>. This rod can be turned to adjust the bar C5 relative to the cam F and the scale CI, by means of a knob C17 which is placed on the other side of a key stop on the frame of the machine and which leans against this judgment.
The end of the bar C5 is folded over the nut, so that by rotating the rod C15, the bar C5 can be pulled to the right, as shown in fig. 1.
The CI rack is periodically raised to mesh with the toothed wheel C on the shaft which also carries the two toothed pinions AI and A @ 7, which mesh with the A2 and A 3 toothed rings (fig. 3) mounted at the opposite ends of support A. The 1st CI rack is lifted by a lever C7 which pivots on the frame of the machine in c.
One end of this lever enters an opening C4 formed in the vertical arm of the bar C ', while the other end carries an eccentrically mounted roller which projects into a groove in the face of the cam D (fig. 1). Cam D thus raises and lowers lever C7, bar C 'and bar C5 in a positive manner. The shaft D1 carrying the cam D also carries a bevel gear which meshes with another bevel gear D3 mounted on a drive shaft.
The mechanism also comprises a retaining pawl E (fig. 2) carried by an arm El of a lever in two parts, the other arm E2 of which carries an eccentrically mounted roller E5 which enters the cam groove D controlling the engagement of the rack CI with the toothed wheel C.
The two parts of this lever turn on a common pivot E 'which the hand holds together, and the arms El and E' are coupled together by an ankle E4. The pivot E 3 passes through vertical slots made in the arms El, E2, and when the pawl E is partially released, it falls by its own weight outside of the wheel C. As the rack CI is also disengaged from the wheel C, the 'parts B, BI can be easily removed from the composing machine or placed on it.
The cam D is arranged so as to produce the complete engagement of the rack CI with the toothed wheel C before the retaining pawl E is released from this wheel by the cam, and vice versa.
At the end of each line of composition, cam F moves bar C5 to the right (fig. 1 and 5), and when cam D has lifted the CI rack so that it meshes with wheel C, the sheet support A is rotated by means of the rings and toothed pinions A2 , A3, A4, A5 and C so that a blank portion of the sheet is placed in the exact position to receive a new line of composition, the extent of this rotation being determined by the preliminary adjustment of the bar C5 relative to the scale CI.
The drive gear between the CI mesh and the cylindrical sheet holder A is a reduction gear, the reduction being 14 to 1.
It is necessary to put or put back the sheet support A in absolutely exact position relative to an opening B ° of parts B, BI and through which pass the photographic light rays, and it is born It is also necessary that the same degree of precision be given to the step-by-step movement of the support A for the supply line by line.
These adjustments and movements are transmitted by the rings and toothed pinions A2, A3, A4, A5, C and CI, and the necessary manipulations are facilitated and to a very high degree precision is achieved thanks to a graduated scale G fixed on the shaft AI of the sheet support A and movable relative to a fixed index GI placed at the end of the parts B, BI, and thanks to a graduated vernier scale G 'fixed on the shaft of the toothed wheel C and cooperating with an index finger G3.
When the cam F, by turning, releases the bar C5, the latter is returned to its initial position against the face of the cam by the spring C12 (fig. 1 and 5), one end of which is fixed to a tongue of the bar. C5 and the other end is attached to the frame of the machine. When a text is composed, the extent of angular movement given to the sheet support A is equal to the point dimension of the characters, combined with an amount which can be variable and which represents the value of the line space.
When another material is composed, for example a model or a background comprising a number of different elements, the extent of the angular movement given to the support A by the cam F is then the point dimension of the elements, so that the material of each line of the composition assembles with the material of the adjacent lines to form an uninterrupted or continuous pattern, lengthwise, on the receiver sheet.
We have seen that an opening B4 is located at the base of the parts B, BI, through which pass the light rays embracing the images to be photographed. As has been said, the sheet carrier A remains stationary throughout the composition of a typographic material line, and the successive images are projected by some means, separately and each in an exact position with respect to the register and alignment, for example by means of a prism or reflector constituting part of an optical system and which is moved step by step along the opening BI. </ I > Such a projection means is known.
The box is provided with handles B to facilitate the handling of the support A and the parts B, BI when these are removed from the composing machine. The parts B, BI and the support A can be removed from the machine in order to insert or remove a sensitive sheet, in a dark room. To allow this operation to be carried out easily and quickly, the box is fixed to the frame of the machine by two bolts B5 and B6 which are pivotally mounted on the frame of the machine and which have a shoulder resting on the slotted tabs B7 , B "carried by the BI part of the case.
A bead A7 of rubber or other suitable material is attached to the holder A so as to extend over the opening B4 so as to prevent entry of light through the opening B- 'when the housing is removed from it. the machine.
The exact position of the parts B, BI relative to the sheet support A on the composing machine, and more particularly the position of the opening B4 through which the light rays enter, is determined by gou BI position pins (fig. 4) intended to enter into XI holes made in the X frame of the machine.
These XI holes are slightly widened at their upper end to facilitate entry of the BI studs, and the housing is finally positioned with extreme precision by BII dowels on the underside of the part BI which are arranged so as to closely fill the sockets X2 of the frame of the machine.
A sensitive sheet is placed on the support A, its upper edge resting against a rectilinear edge As (fig. 4) and its straight edge against a flange A 9 (fig. 3) which acts as a side marker. The sheet is thus kept taut and in close contact with the support A acting as a rigid support, and the sheet can be temporarily fixed in an exactly marked position by means of an adhesive tape disposed towards the margins of the sheet.
The parts B, BI, with the support A and the sheet mounted on it, can then be placed on the composing machine, the opening B4 in the housing being closed by an A7 bead.
The parts B, BI are placed on the machine to be dialed when the supply rack CI is released from the wheel C and the retaining pawl E, by release of the pivot E3, is also released from the wheel C. When a sensitive sheet has been placed on the support A and the latter is placed in the parts B, BI, the opening B4 is closed by the bead A7, and the edge As for the sensitive sheet is placed substantially as shown in FIG. 4.
When the housing has been placed on the dialing machine, the pivot E3 is turned to release the pawl E from the wheel C. Then, by turning the scale G relative to the index GI, the support A can be turned to bring the leading edge of the sensitive sheet to the desired position relative to the opening B4, to receive the material of the first line of composition.
By ensuring, by the devices described above, the very precise position of parts B, BI with the sheet support A on a typesetting machine, more of a housing and the composition can be continued on a second sensitive sheet while the first is processed.
Likewise, by keeping the sensitive sheet stretched against a backing, no accidental or fortuitous relative movement occurs between the sheet and its backing, and there is no possibility of uneven feeding, as may occur when a Sensitive roll film is fed from a supply reel onto a winding reel and unwinds onto a backing made of loose opaque paper.
Further, when roll films are employed in these machines, grippers must be used to press the portion of the film to be exposed against a support or table, and this attachment tends to move or twist the film locally, and this is sufficient to prevent faithful reproduction of all the essential characteristics of faces of fine types, particularly serifs and hairlines.
The precision with which the film holder A can be adjusted with each step of its movement in the composing machine and put back in place by the described mechanism makes it possible to photograph on the sheet a copy or a foreign text after the main body of the composition has been completed. Examples of such extraneous matter are chapter headings and numbers, titles, double-line characters and other symbols and printing patterns.
It has heretofore been common practice to photograph such foreign matter separately and insert them into the main film after the latter has been developed. Such methods are expensive and tedious and require the services of very skilled operators. Difficulties also arise in the use of roll films if the foreign material is to be photographed on the original film. Repositioning the film for such a purpose tends to produce abrasion of the sensitive surface during rewinding, and imprecise fasteners which hold the desired portion of the film have the same effect on the film each time.
The precision with which the cylindrical support of the sheet can be put in place by the mechanism described, relative to the slot BI of the housing through which the light passes, facilitates the composition of matter in columns, because after the photocomposition of the material on one column, the sheet holder A can be replaced for the composition of one or more additional columns throughout the first column, and the perfect alignment of the material of one column with that of the other columns can be assured.
The adjustment possibilities of the film support A, allowed by the mechanism C, CI, C5, A8, A5, A2 and A3 and the Graduated scales on parts B, BI and on the wheel shaft C allow the support A to be adjusted to within 0.008 mm and to photograph special or foreign images on the sensitive sheet with absolute precision relative to the main composition.
