So können z. B. bei einer Ausführungsform die kürzeren Einzelfäden aus einem Elastomer und die längeren aus einem steiferen Material bestehen. Diese Wahl hat den Vorteil, dass sich das elastische Material leicht so weit dehnen lässt, bis die steiferen Fäden geradegestreckt sind, wobei dann diese steiferen Fäden eine verhältnismässig hohe Zugfestig- keit ergeben. Ferner wird sich das Elastomer ohne weiteres auf die kürzere Länge zusammenziehen, so dass das Material wieder seine Fülligkeit gewinnt, sobald die Spannung nach- lässt. Für Kleider und andere Zwecke;
Januar 1970.
Fig. 7 zeigt dieses fertige Produkt.
Yarns or yarn-like products made from single threads which are held together by a binding agent instead of twisting them are known. However, these known pro products are either relatively stiff and compact or show little cohesion, so that their possible applications are limited. In contrast, the present invention is based on the object of creating a yarn or yarn-like product that has satisfactory properties in terms of bulk, flexibility, elasticity and cohesion.
It is known to wrap a bundle of individual threads with a thread of molten polymer which is pressed out through a nozzle rotating around the bundle, a yarn or a yarn-like product being obtained from a twisted yarn with similar properties without the bundle having any real twist is granted.
The present invention relates to a method for producing a yarn or a yarn-like product from a bundle of textile threads which are held together by a polymeric material comprising them in a ring shape. This inventive method is characterized in that the bundle of textile threads is subjected to a false twist in order to put it temporarily into a twisted and rotating state that a liquid polymer is applied to the rotating twisted bundle during at least one revolution of the same at intervals over its length wherein the polymer is applied to the rotating bundle from at least one point that follows the bundle in its longitudinal movement during the application,
but whose rotation does not participate. and that the applied polymer is converted into the solid state.
Because areas within which there is a strong weave alternate with areas without any weave, the yarn or yarn-like product can be given all of the above properties at the same time.
The present patent extends to the immediate products of the process according to the invention and in particular to a yarn or yarn-like product obtained by this process, in which the polymer material forms rings that encompass the bundle of textile threads and it is compactly ring-shaped in the enclosing areas hold together and the parts of the bundle that lie between the rings are voluminous.
From the patent application NL 66 08 328 or the corresponding laid-open specification DT 1 660 670, a method for producing a bulky yarn with regular constrictions is known, which consists in that the yarn between two fixed points under the action of a gas flowing perpendicular to the yarn direction is put into forced oscillation, whereby it traverses the gas jet twice in each oscillation period. Each time a constriction is formed in the yarn, in which the individual threads have a firm closure without, however, being connected to one another.
Compared to this known method, that according to the present invention is characterized in that the individual threads are enclosed by the polymer in the areas in which they receive a solid closure, so that they can no longer detach from this closure and the structure of the Yarn becomes permanent and stable.
US Pat. No. 3,061,998 describes the production of bulk yarns by combining individual threads of different shrinkability and being connected to one another at intervals or at their crossing points by heating or gluing.
According to US Pat. No. 2,807 132, several core yarns are wound around helically with a covering element under tension to produce a decorative yarn. In places, the pitch of the winding can be so small that the core yarn is wrapped around it over its entire circumference and the winding forms a hump, while the core yarn is largely exposed between these humps.
The patent application NL 64 12 987 discloses a process for the production of a practically straight synthetic multifilament yarn, in which the individual threads are glued to each other at random points distributed over their length because they treated with a liquid, volatile solvent after weak Falschdre hung and then be turned on again while the solvent evaporated.
Compared to these known methods, the one according to the present invention is characterized by the limitation of the gathering of the individual threads to short annular areas, which allows greater bulk, flexibility and elasticity of the yarn as a whole.
The length of the areas provided with rings of polymer material can be between 0.2 mm and 1 cm for most purposes, while the length of the areas in between should be between 1 mm and 5 cm for most purposes. Depending on the use, a bundle of threads and / or staple fibers and / or foils that have been defibrated to form textile fibers can be assumed.
An advantageous embodiment of the product according to the invention is characterized in that the individual threads in the areas between the rings are of different lengths when the thread is unloaded. This is generally achieved by varying the shrinkage of the individual threads after the rings have been attached, as will be explained later. The relatively long fibers are bent and then strive to lengthen the product, while the rela tiv short fibers are stretched straight and then strive to shorten the product. In this way you get a very large and very consistent body.
Another advantageous embodiment of the product according to the invention, in which the threads between the rings have different lengths, is characterized in that the individual threads in the central part of the bundle are shorter in cross-section than in the outer part. This structure achieves an extremely pleasing visual effect and generally also the greatest bulkiness.
Another embodiment of the product, in which the threads between the rings also have different lengths, is characterized in that the distribution of the short and long individual threads is random. Although this structure is generally somewhat less bulky, it is generally more durable.
A bundle of individual threads which, when the method according to the invention is carried out, provides such a product with randomly distributed short and long thread sections, can be obtained by mixing staple fibers of different shrinkability and producing a raw yarn from them in a known manner.
If, as mentioned, the longer and the shorter single threads are to have different shrinkage. these differences in shrinkage can be produced by a wide variety of material combinations.
So z. B. in one embodiment, the shorter individual threads consist of an elastomer and the longer of a stiffer material. This choice has the advantage that the elastic material can easily be stretched until the stiffer threads are straightened, in which case these stiffer threads result in a relatively high tensile strength. Furthermore, the elastomer will readily contract to the shorter length, so that the material regains its bulk as soon as the tension eases. For clothes and other purposes;
for which fine fibers are required, the elastomer used can preferably be a thermoplastic elastomer of the type in which the stabilization occurs through crystalline segments instead of through actual crosslinking, as is the case, for example, for extrudable polyurethane rubber.
In a further embodiment, the shorter individual threads can be crimped bicomponent fibers or threads and the longer threads can be single-component fibers or threads. Crimped bicomponent fibers generally behave like elastomeric fibers and have the advantage that they are easier to mix with other fibers (generally in the uncrimped state) and that a larger selection of these is available. On the other hand, the tension in the stretched state is generally lower for small elongations.
If shorter and longer single threads are mentioned in the cases in which the fibers consist of about helically crimped two-component fibers, then the length is not the length along the helical line, but the length measured in the axis of the screw.
In a further advantageous embodiment, the individual threads are bicomponent fibers with crimps of different strengths. This results in a product of particularly high extensibility, but to a certain extent at the expense of bulk.
Cut to small lengths, the yarn or yarn-like product according to the invention can advantageously be used in the form of short sections, each of which has two rings made of polymer, as a substitute for feathers or down for filling pillows or quilts.
This use of the yarn or product is per se not covered by the present patent.
Although the cohesion of the yarn or yarn-like product transversely to the longitudinal direction is essentially due to the rings, it must be noted that the product can also be designed with a slight twist.
Another advantage of the invention is that the yarn or yarn-like product can be held together transversely by a particularly quick and practical method. It has been shown that the method according to the invention can be performed many times faster than with a real twist and also significantly faster than with the method of spinning a thread bundle with a helical thread made of molten polymer, which is made from a thread rotating around the thread bundle Nozzle is extruded.
As is known, a false rotation can be carried out very quickly, and it has also been shown that the application and hardening of a liquid polymer in places can be carried out similarly quickly.
It is known that the false twist is usually used for the production of crimped yarns, the deformations of the individual fibers being thermally fixed in the twisted shape. However, the present invention is not specifically aimed at the manufacture of crimped yarn, and the aforesaid fixation is therefore not essential for carrying out the method.
The mis-rotation can be accomplished in several known ways. Particularly high speed and the advantage that it is possible to work with high thread tension is provided by the method in which the incorrect rotation of yarn or a yarn-like product takes place by rolling in an essentially linear zone between two friction members, at least one of which is two or more Has friction elements which are successively brought into contact with the other friction member,
while the friction elements are displaced transversely to the direction of movement of the yarn during their contact with the opposite friction member and are returned to their original position as soon as the contact is over. The use of this method for rolling yarn is described in a different context in the journal nPlastics Rubbers, January 1970, page 31.
The polymer for forming the rings can be used either in molten, dissolved or emulsified form, but also in the form of one or more pre-polymers. Correspondingly, the conversion to the solid state can take place either by cooling or evaporation of a solvent or an emulsifier or by coagulating the emulsion and by curing the prepolymer or prepolymers.
In one embodiment of the inventive method, the feeding of the polymer can happen by means of an endless series of point-like deposits of the polymer, which are brought into contact with the rotating fiber bundle in repeated succession, moving along it and out of contact with it again to be brought. As a result of the continuous movement, this variant of the process works particularly quickly.
The quickest way of supplying each of the point-like deposits mentioned is that the material is extruded through an extrusion channel that ends in the container. (The deposition points can also very simply be the mouths of these channels.) A modification of the method consists in that the deposition points are formed by cells that are opened by means of a doctor knife or dgt. be filled.
Another variant of the method is characterized in that the liquid polymer is supplied by means of nozzles, each of which, while it applies the polymer, is moved together with the thread bundle and at the same speed and in the same direction as this, whereupon the nozzle is moved back to its original position, preferably at a much greater speed than that of the thread bundle.
This variant of the process requires a little more time, but enables particularly precise metering of the polymer. In general, a thin thread of the polymer is drawn from one ring to the other.
The method can be used to produce a yarn according to the invention of particularly great bulk. The variant of the method preferred for this purpose is characterized in that, after the polymer has been applied, the various individual threads are shrunk to different degrees in order to obtain the desired bulk. The best results are achieved by using individual threads made of different materials that have different shrinkage behavior. However, the materials do not need to be chemically different. It can also be different polymers only in this respect.
The different shrinkage can also be obtained by unequal heating (and / or swelling) of different parts of the bundle.
An embodiment of the process according to the invention for producing a yarn is described in more detail below with reference to the drawing. The drawing shows: FIG. 1 a photograph which, in four times enlargement, shows a yarn produced according to the method according to the invention, which is tied with rings and consists of crimped two-component fibers which have different lengths between the rings ,
Fig. 2 is a schematic representation of a preferred embodiment of the product, wherein the threads between the rings have different lengths, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the production process when tying the bundle with the rings at intervals, Fig. 4 in a view a detail of the extruder die for the point-wise application of the polymer in the production line shown in FIG. 3, FIG. 5 a side view according to section I-1 of FIG. 4,
6 shows a schematic representation of a device with a reciprocating nozzle for applying the polymer to the bundle in the twisted and rotating state; FIG. 7 shows a schematic representation of a device for applying the polymer to the rotating, twisted bundle With the aid of a pulsating air flow, and FIG. 8 shows a schematic view of the product obtained by the method according to the invention with the aid of one of the devices shown in FIGS. 6 and 7.
In the yarn shown in FIG. 2, several threads or staple fibers are connected to one another by ring-shaped polymer strips 1, 2 and 3. The threads or staple fibers 4, 5, 6 and 7 are, in each case measured between the edges of the adjacent rings, relatively long. These long threads or fibers form loops and have a tendency to lengthen the entire bundle, while the more shortened threads or staple fibers 8 and 9 tend to shorten the entire bundle.
For the sake of clarity, the remaining threads, for example 10, are only indicated as small fibers in the immediate vicinity of the rings; it should be noted, however, that they generally fill the entire area between adjacent rings with no or only a relatively few loose ends. Some of these threads or fibers, only partially shown, will be relatively long, while others will be relatively short. It is of course also possible to provide a whole series of length gradations in the zones between the rings.
The threads or fibers 8 and 9 are shown completely stretched in the drawing; but they could also be helically shaped, as is the case when the threads or fibers consist of shrunk two-component yarn, the components of which are adjacent to one another.
Each thread or each fiber is then helical with an alternating right and left direction of winding. Similarly, the loop-forming threads or fibers 4, 5, 6 and 7 can also be helical, although they must of course have a lower contraction than the threads 8 and 9.
Experience has shown that the formation of the loops gives the yarn a large, resilient bulk. In addition, the tight bond through the spaced rings results in a high flexural elasticity of the yarn-like product.
In the device shown in FIG. 3, an untwisted raw yarn or similar starting material 11 is drawn off from a spool 12. However, it could also be removed directly from a card or from an extrusion device via a stretching device required in this case to complete the individual threads. The starting material 11 can be any raw yarn or the like. About a set of feed rollers 13, 14 and 15, the yarn is fed into a zone where it is twisted by a false twist device and set in rotation.
The false rotation device has driven rollers 16 and 17 formed from movable sectors. These rollers rotate according to the arrows 18, 19 marked Neten. At the same time, each roller sector moves when it passes the position of engagement, with constant Ge speed in the direction shown by the corresponding arrow 20 and 21, d. H. the two rollers 16 and 17 we ken always in opposite directions on the yarn and thereby generate the false rotation. In each case after passing through the point of intervention, each sector is returned to its original position in order to be ready for the next wrong rotation operation when it again comes into the area of the point of intervention.
These reciprocating movements, synchronized with the revolutions, are controlled by a set of cams. A more detailed description of these false twist rollers can be found in the article Fall Twist and Stretching Process for Tape in the magazine Plastics Rubbers from January 22, 1970. This device works at a particularly high speed, allows the simultaneous treatment of many yarns and the application of a high tension in the Twist zone.
It is advantageous to work with a tension in the twist zone in order to overcome the friction of the guide means which counteract the twist of the yarn.
In the section between the feed rollers 14-15 and the rollers 16, 17 formed from movable sectors, the yarn, which is denoted here by 22, is twisted and put in Rota tion; after leaving the sectors consisting of rollers 16 and 17, however, the yarn, which is now denoted by 23, will be untwisted again. The application of the rings 24 is carried out by means of an applicator roller 25 which is driven in such a way that its circumference follows the movement of the yarn 22.
The applicator roller is, as can be seen in more detail in FIGS. 4 and 5, as an extrusion die: The molten polymer is passed from the extruder 26 through a pipe 27 into the inner part 28 of the die, which, however, does not prevent the rotation of the applicator roller 25 participate.
For the sake of clarity, FIG. 3 shows only the production of a single yarn; in reality, however, several yarns are produced side by side at the same time, as shown in FIG.
In order to distribute the molten polymer among the various yarns, the fixed inner part 28 of the die contains a distribution chamber 29 with a number of slots 30 which are evenly distributed over the length of the applicator roller. Each slot 30 supplies a series of radial channels 31 in the rotating applicator roll 25. Each row of channels terminates in a circular row of nozzles where the application takes place. A seal is provided between the fixed inner part 28 of the extrusion die and the roller 25. The extrusion through each of the channels 31 takes place intermittently, in each case when the nozzle is in its application position.
In order to ensure an even distribution of the polymer at every point, each row of nozzles is at the bottom of a groove 32 of semicircular cross-section, the diameter of the groove is only slightly larger than the diameter of the twisted yarn 22. The resistance was against the rotation of the Yarn around its axis is kept as small as possible by the fact that the applicator roller only touches the yarn over a short distance, which is, however, long enough to allow the yarn to perform at least one revolution around its own axis for the duration of the contact to get shaped ring.
In order to achieve this, it is also essential to drive the carrier roller at such a speed that each nozzle exactly or almost exactly follows the passage of the yarn. d. H. moves at essentially the same speed and in the same direction as the yarn as long as it applies polymer to it. For the sake of better clarity, the drive is not shown, but the rotation is indicated by the arrow 33.
A heater for the extrusion die is also provided; however, their elements are not shown. Also not shown are the yarn guides in front of the guide rollers 13 and in front of the applicator roller 25, which yarn guides serve to keep the different yarns separate and to ensure that the yarns are reliably guided in the grooves 32.
Between the applicator roller 25 and the false rotation rollers 16 and 17, the rings 24 are strongly cooled by means of a water jet or a water bath (not shown). A cooling bath, however, must be constructed so that it does not obstruct the rotation of the yarn 22 about its axis.
In order to avoid squeezing said rings, the sectored rollers 16 and 17 must be coated with soft rubber, or, more practical, one or both surfaces can be grooved equidistant from one another like the distances between the rings 24. In addition, the pressure roller 25 and the false-rotation rollers 16 and 17 must be synchronized in such a way that the rings 24 come to rest in the grooves and thus prevent the rings from being squeezed.
Behind the false-twist rollers 16 and 17, a set of driven auxiliary rollers 36 and 37 is provided, which support the false-twist rollers 16 and 17 by generating tension in the yarn 22 when the latter is passed over the applicator rollers 25 in the rotating state.
As mentioned earlier, such tension is applied to overcome the resistance to the rotation of the yarn. If the raw yarn 11 consists of threads, fibers or other single threads made of different materials and if a high tension is exerted before and / or during the false twist, then after the tension has ceased, when the yarn assumes the untwisted state, a spontaneous one set quite large volume. This area, denoted by 34, can be seen before it is wound onto the bobbin 35. The abovementioned bulk is due to the different shrinkage of the various materials.
In order to further increase such different shrinkage, an oven can be provided in the device after the rollers 36 and 37, but such a heat treatment to develop the bulk can also be carried out during the rewinding of the yarn or on the finished textile product.
If the product has to be fine-cut for use as feathers or dowels, there is a cutting device in the device instead of the spool 35, which runs synchronously with the applicator roller in order to cut the finished yarn between the rings at regular intervals.
In FIG. 6, 22 again denotes the yarn which runs in the direction of the arrow through the device shown and is twisted and set in rotation in its area by the subsequent false twisting device. A directed at the twisted rotating yarn nozzle 38 is moved by the push rod 39 of a crank mechanism along the yarn 22 back and forth, in such a way that its mouth rend a portion of one half of each revolution of the crank at substantially the same speed and moves in the same direction as the yarn, while it rotates in front of the nozzle orifice at least one full revolution around its own axis.
During the corresponding part of the other half of each revolution of the crank, the nozzle moves at essentially the same speed, but in the opposite sense, as the yarn 22, i.e. at twice the speed relative to it. During the first-mentioned part of each revolution of the crank, the nozzle 38 applies the polymer emerging from it with each revolution of the yarn in the form of a ring on this.
Then, by means of a control device, not shown, the supply of the polymer to the nozzle and thus its application to the yarn is interrupted until the nozzle 38 has returned to the beginning of the route that it covers during the first-mentioned part of each crank rotation, whereupon the be the cycle begins again. In the meantime, the yarn 22 has continued to run at a constant speed, so that the nozzle applies the polymer in an annular manner when its supply is restarted at a distance from the last applied ring.
According to a variant of this embodiment, the interruption of the supply of the polymer through the nozzle can be omitted, that is to say the polymer can be applied continuously. In this case, the rings or groups of rings placed together during the remaining part of each crank rotation, i.e. at different or opposite turns, are applied to the crank during the first part of successive rotations of the crank, i.e. at essentially the same speed of nozzle and yarn Speed of nozzle and yarn, connected by an uninterrupted polymer thread, which runs in a kind of helical line with increasing and decreasing slope around the yarn.
In FIG. 7, too, the yarn running through the device in the direction of the arrow is designated by 22. A thread of viscous polymer 44 continuously emerges through a stationary nozzle 40. With 41, 42 and 43 three different positions are denoted, which this thread occupies one after the other in the course of a working cycle.
In the first position 41 shown, the polymer thread 44 has been blown backwards counter to the direction of travel of the yarn 22 by a pulsating air stream exiting a nozzle 45, which is controlled by an automatic valve; the air flow has just been interrupted and the pile thread has caught the yarn with its free end.
In the dashed position 43, the yarn has made more than one full revolution since the interruption of the air flow at the point touched by the end of the polymer thread, entraining the polymer thread in its rotation and in its longitudinal movement and being looped around it in a ring ; The beginning and end of the ring have touched and are glued together. The air flow through the nozzle 45 now starts again, and the polymer thread 44 is quickly blown back into the first position 41. In doing so, it forms a thin layer which, in the finished product, will run along a helical line in the opposite direction of rotation to the rings surrounding the yarn.
Fig. 7 shows this finished product. 46 are the rings formed by the polymer thread, 47 are the sections of the polymer thread running helically around the thread after the incorrect twist has been eliminated, and 22 are the yarn threads held together by the rings.
Yarn-like products made by the present process can be used for a large number of textile and other technical purposes. It is possible to vary their fineness over a wide range, for example from around 20 denier to yarns in the order of magnitude of 100 denier, but the range between 5 (10 to about 30,000 denier) is preferred. The following examples are intended to illustrate various applications, Example 1 This example describes the production of a bulky effect yarn for curtains.
The raw yarn consists of two-component threads made of polypropylene and polycaprolactam, which are connected next to one another by means of a thin layer of an adhesive ionomeric polyethylene. The raw yarn was made by the method and equipment described in the July 1969 article Split Film Gets a Second Look in Textile Industries magazine.
As a result of random irregularities in the die parts, the fibers in the yarn show different crimpability after stretching, so that the distribution of these differences can also be viewed as almost random. The average denier of the fibers is around 20 and that of the yarn around 4000.
By means of a production line shown in Fig. 3 who applied the short polypropylene rings at equal intervals of 2 cm. According to ASTM D 1238-62 T, Condition K, the melt index of polypropylene is about 10. In order to obtain a smooth application of the rings, it has proven advantageous to use a material with such a low toughness. The rings are cooled in a water bath. The wrong turn takes place with six turns over 10 cm.
The crimp is developed by heating to 120 C in a relaxed state, with each of the individual threads crimping in a helical shape, but to different degrees. The appearance of the yarn is similar to that shown in the photo in FIG. The yarn-like product is used as a weft thread for a fine fabric with nylon as the warp thread, resulting in a very attractive looking fabric. Example 2 This example describes the production of a yarn which, cut into short pieces, can be used as a spring replacement for the filling of pillows or quilts.
For this purpose, the raw yarn should be a carded blend of 4 denier monocomponent staple fibers of polyethylene terephthalate, the yarn again being approximately 4000 denier. The material for the rings should be a copolymer of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene glycol with a melting point of 180 C and a melt index of 2 in accordance with the ASTM specification mentioned, but the latter with condition E.
The rings should be applied as short and as thin as possible and with a gap of 4 cm. After the twist is removed, the yarn between the rings can be cut into short pieces, each of which contains two rings. Numerical example for dimensions, working speeds and rotational speeds for FIGS. 3 to 5.
