fig.

Process for manufacturing films and apparatus for carrying out this process.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of plastic films.
It relates more particularly to a process for extruding an inflated tube in order to manufacture a plastic film which does not require a support, and to the apparatus for carrying out this process.
There is known a method of extruding a tube according to which a thermoplastic material is extruded in the molten state through an annular die in the form of a seamless tube, and. the tube is inflated to a determined diameter as it leaves the die and while it is in the plastic state allowing it to be shaped. A gaseous coolant is blown to the outer peripheral surface of the tube near the point of extrusion to cool the tube to an extent sufficient to solidify it after swelling to the desired diameter.
It is also known that the gaseous cooling agent can be blown onto the tube by a perforated pipe wound in a helix, or by a perforated ring.
Although the already known methods and apparatus have met with wide commercial success, it has been found that the gaseous coolant is applied thereto in an irregular flow to the outer peripheral wall of the inflated tube. As a result, the tube was unevenly cooled, with thick patches and thin patches extending in varying directions following the air stream. When this tube was then stretched by the blowing agent, the thin areas stretched more than the thick areas. Thus, by winding the flattened tube, an uneven roll with bumps was obtained.
In the case of plastics susceptible to cold creep, the winding tension stretched the film over the bumps so that the unwound film could not be laid out flat, exhibited corrugations and required special care when packing. 'printing, completion, etc.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate these drawbacks.
It relates to a process for manufacturing films, of plastic material without support, by extrusion of an inflated tube, characterized in that the outer peripheral surface of successive sections of a seamless inflated tube is passed continuously. in the plastic state of conformation in the zone of action of an annular direct current and converging gaseous cooling agent blown through an annular orifice completely surrounding the tube, rotating around the central axis of the latter, but spaced from the tube which passes through it, so that all the points of the outer peripheral surface of the tube situated in said zone of action are continuously subjected to the action of the cooling agent.
The subject of the invention is also an apparatus for carrying out this method, this apparatus being characterized in that it comprises a die with an annular orifice, a device for extruding a thermoplastic material melted by this. orifice to form a seamless tube, a device for continuously driving the tube from the point of extrusion, a device for maintaining a substantially constant bubble of a gaseous agent in the section of the tube extending between the point of extrusion and the driving point of the tube, a device for blowing a gaseous cooling agent in the form of a converging and continuous annular stream,
surrounding the outer surface of the section of the inflated tube in the vicinity of the die and directed on this surface, and a device for driving the latter device in a rotational movement around the longitudinal axis of the tube.
The term eta. Shaping plastic is used hereinafter to define the state of plastic which is not solidified or only partially solidified and can be permanently elongated, for example by stretching.
In general, any gas which does not exert any adverse influence on the plastic material can be used as a swelling agent.
Atmospheric air is preferred for its very low cost.
The invention is not limited to a particular gaseous coolant. This agent can be air at room temperature, with or without the addition of humidity, or air cooled to a temperature below room temperature. In general, any gaseous agent either at room temperature or at a lower temperature can be used if it does not exert an unfavorable influence on the tube.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the process and represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the apparatus for carrying out the process.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view (with the extrusion member in partial section) of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG, 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a brush holder and the brushes that it contains.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4, and
fig. 6 is a sectional view taken along line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
In this drawing, where the same parts are designated by the same reference numerals in all the figures, 2 denotes a support of an ext. rusion 4, provided at one end with a feed hopper 6 which passes the selected thermoplastic material into a chamber 8 containing an extrusion screw.
The electric vibrator 10, of a known model, cooperates with the hopper 6 to accelerate the passage of the thermoplastic material in the extrusion apparatus. A single thread screw 12 is placed in the chamber 8, and, by rotation clockwise when looking at the left side of FIG. I, advances the thermoplastic material in the apparatus. The screw 12 is driven in a known manner by means not shown. The al) - such extrusion 4 is provided with a chamber 14, surrounded by a jacket and traversed by a heating agent.
The thermoplastic material melts as it is forced through the apparatus by the screw 12 and passes, in the molten state, through a 90 ° elbow 16 suitably attached, for example by bolts, to the head 18 of the thermoplastic material. the extrusion apparatus. A die, generally indicated by the numeral 20, is attached in any suitable manner to the outlet end of the elbow 16, so that molten thermoplastic material may enter it.
As shown schematically in fig. p, the die, comprises a cup 22 and a needle 24 which could be adjustable in the axial direction of the die, separated from each other to form an annular orifice 26 from which the molten mass exits in the form of a tube of thermoplastic material 28, hot, viscous and resembling gum. The die 20 has a central orifice 30 connected to an air inlet 32, thanks to which air can be introduced inside the tube to inflate it.
The air inlet 32 is provided with a valve, not shown, to prevent the entry of air once the desired quantity of air has been introduced inside the tube. In case the amount of air decreases in the tube, through leaks or in any other way, the desired amount of air can be added by opening the tap.
The inflated tube 28 is driven out of the orifice 26 of the die, in substantially direction. vertical by means of a pair of pinch rollers 40 and 42 remote from the die.
The pinch roller 40 can rotate on a shaft 44 in bearings 46 mounted on cross pieces 48 supported by vertical pillars 50 and 52. The pinch roller 42 is mounted on the shaft 54 rotating in bearings 56 mounted on the pieces. transverse 48. One or both rollers 40 and 42 are driven by known means not shown. In either case, the peripheral speed of rollers 40 and 42 is preferably sufficient to stretch the tube while it is. in the plastic state of conformation.
The rollers 40 and 42 also serve to flatten the tube passing between them into a flat strip, designated by the number 58, which is wound on a mandrel driven by a torque motor, not shown. If desired, guide rollers, not shown, for directing the flattened tube from the nip roll to the take-up mandrel may be provided between roll 42 and this mandrel.
It will be noted that the swelling agent is enclosed or confined between the nip line of the rollers 40 and 42 and the die 20, and that it constitutes an isolated gas bubble which advances as a whole, while remaining substantially constant in quantity, inside successive parts of the tube extending between the die and the pecking line.
As can be seen in Figs. 1 and 3, the tube 28 driven out of the die passes through a ring 66 which applies a gaseous cooling agent in the form of an annular stream on the peripheral wall of the tube. The ring is provided with a circular passage 68, and its inner wall 70 has a slot 72 extending over its periphery and constituting an orifice allowing the gaseous agent to pass from. cooling in the form of an annular stream in the passage. The diameter of the passage 68 allows the tube to pass through without contacting the interior wall 70 or other part of the ring. The air ring is provided with a series of baffles 76 and 78 so that the gaseous agent takes the path shown in FIG. 3 to port 72.
It will be noted that the bottom 80 of the ring 66 between the internal partition 70 and the baffle 78, which cooperates with the peripheral internal partition 70 to form the orifice 72, is inclined upwards in the direction of the passage 68, directing thus the annular stream of gaseous coolant upward and with slight convergence with respect to the axis of passage 68. If desired, the orifice of the ring can direct coolant perpendicular to the tube. .
As seen in fig. 1, the air ring 66 has a pulley surface 84, which cooperates with an endless belt 86 driven by a pulley 88 placed on a shaft 90 of a speed reducer 92 suitably connected to the shaft 94 d. 'a 96 engine.
Both speed reducer 92 and motor 96 are suitably mounted on post 50.
For reasons which will be explained later, the bottom 98 of the cooling air ring 66 is fixed to a plate 100. The plate 100 on which the ring is mounted is pierced with a circular central opening of sufficient size to deliver passage to the front end of the die. A guide ring 102 is suitably attached to the underside of the mounting plate 100, near the opening, as shown in FIG. 3.
The inner edge of the guide ring 102 extends beyond the inner edge of the ring 100. The guide ring 102 cooperates with numerous rollers 104 and 106 mounted spaced apart on a band 108 clamped in such a manner. - tachable on the die 20. The rollers 104 co-operate with the lower surface of the guide ring 102, while the rollers 106 co
operate with the inner edge of the guide ring 102. Thanks to this device, the air ring is able to rotate around the central axis of the. die or tube, together with the plate 100 on which it is mounted, as the pulley 84 of the air ring rotates.
The position and location of the cooling ring relative to the outlet of the bar can be changed by moving the backing strip 108.
The speed of rotation of the cooling ring is relatively critical and depends on the diameter of the die and the thickness of the walls of the extruded tube. If this speed is too high, the tube twists, causing difficulties in the subsequent stages of manufacture. In general, satisfactory results have been obtained by rotating the ring between about 0.2 and 2.5 revolutions per minute depending on the diameter of the die and the indications of empirical testing. Normally, low rotational speeds are used for large diameter tubes.
A gaseous cooling medium, for example air, is supplied to the cooling ring by a pair of blowers 114 arranged face to face. The outlet nozzle of each blower is connected by a pipe 116 to an opening in the air ring. Each blower 114 is driven by a separate motor 118 carried by a support 120 fixed to the mounting plate 100. Thanks to this type of construction, the blower and its motor mechanism rotate around the central axis of the die when the ring of cooling describes the rotational movement discussed above.
The apparatus also includes separate devices for supplying electrical power to each of the motors 118 during operation of the assembly, and these devices will be described below. As the devices are the same for each engine, only one of them will be described, the same reference numbers designating the same parts of the separate devices.
Motor 118 is electrically connected by conductive wires to inner and outer slip rings 126 and 128, respectively, which are securely attached to spaced insulating blocks 130 arranged in a circle and in turn securely attached to mounting plate 100 (Fig. 5). ). A pair of guard rings 132, each with ears 134, extending outwardly and attached to mounting plate 100, are placed near the side edge of blocks 130. In this way, as mounting plate 100 rotates , the collector rings 126 and 128 and the guard rings 132 rotate about their common axis.
In fig. 3, 4, 5 and 6, the reference numerals 136 and 138 denote brushes, respectively interior and exterior in carbon. The inner brush 136 is mounted, as described below, to slide on the slip ring 126, and the outer brush 138 is similarly mounted to slide on the outer slip ring 128.
Each pair of brushes is electrically connected by conductive wires 140 and 142 to a source of electrical energy.
Each of the brushes 136 and 138 is carried separately at one end of a brush holder 148. The other end of the brush holder 148 is shaped as a U-shaped member 150, mounted to rotate on a pivot 152, the opposite ends of which are fixed in the arms 154 of a block 156. Each arm 154 is provided with an adjustable screw 160 for fixing the pivot 152 in position. A tension spring 162 cooperating with the brush holder 148 continuously presses the corresponding brush and maintains it in contact with the slip ring with which it cooperates.
In a preferred embodiment, pieces of thickness 164 are mounted between the arms 154 and the neighboring brush support 148.
Each block 156 is attached to inwardly extending ears 165 of a pair of concentric rings 166 spaced apart from each other. The rings 166 are carried by a pair of plates 170 and 172 diametrically arranged and fixed on uprights 174 and 176. The uprights 174 and 176 are placed on a cross piece 180, carried by uprights 182 and 1. 84. If so desired, the uprights 182 and 184 can be connected to their lower part by a crosspiece 186 (fig. 1).
It will be noted that the rings 166 are separated from the guard rings 132 and partially reopened by the latter.
A cover 190, enclosing the brush assembly, is suitably attached to the rings 166. If desired, the cover 190 can also be attached to the block 156.
Alternatively, a single set of brushes with suitable electrical circuits can be used to supply the motors with electrical energy.
In operation, the selected thermoplastic material, preferably in granules or in another divided form, is introduced into the hopper 6 which feeds the extrusion apparatus, and leaves the annular orifice 26 of the die under the shape of a seamless tube.
This tube is driven from the point of ex you plane by the nip rollers 40 and 42.
A swelling agent is introduced into the tube through the orifice 30, and trapped in the section of the tube between the die and the nip line of the rollers 40 and 42. The amount of blowing agent introduced into the tube is chosen to expand the tube to the desired final diameter.
The tube entrained from the die passes through the passage 68 of the cooling ring where it is subjected to the action of an annular stream of gaseous cooling agent supplied to the cooling ring by the blowers 114, and passing from the ring into passage 68 through peripheral slot 72. The baffles within the cooling ring tend to reduce vortices produced by the flow of gaseous coolant passing through the ring.
During operation, the belt 86, cooperating with the surface 84 forming the pulley on the cooling ring, rotates the latter. Since the cooling ring is attached to the mounting plate 100, these two elements will rotate about the center axis of the die, the rollers 104 and 106 serving to facilitate this movement and to guide the mounting plate. Likewise, the blowers 114 and the motors 118, carried by the mounting plate, will rotate about the central axis of the die.
The slip rings 126 and 128 will also rotate around the central axis of the die. The brushes 136 and 138 are fixed, but are liable to slide on the corresponding slip ring, still in contact with it, which ensures the uninterrupted supply of electrical energy to the motors of the blowers during. walking.
As can be seen from the above description, the gaseous coolant exits the orifice 72 of the cooling ring as an upward and converging annular stream, and comes into contact with the entire peripheral wall of the cooling ring. successive sections of the inflated tube passing through the action zone of this current. By choosing an appropriate longitudinal position for the backing strip 108 with respect to the die, the cooling ring outlet port can be raised or lowered relative to the die orifice.
Although in the preferred embodiment the gaseous cooling agent exits as a single annular stream from the rotating ring, the invention is not limited to this feature. Instead of an annular slit, any number of annular slits or separate openings can be used, thereby causing several streams to exit the ring which will contact the peripheral wall of the tube passing through the area of. action of these currents.
It will be noted that the tube, from the moment when it is extruded until the moment when it is flattened by the pinch rolls, does not come into contact or into engagement with any mechanical element.
The principles of the described process also apply to upward, downward or horizontal extrusion.
The process, which has given satisfactory results in the manufacture of flattened polyethylene tubes, is not limited to the use of this material. In general, it can be applied to all thermoplastics, their mixtures, and mixtures of synthetic rubber and thermoplastic materials. Each thermoplastic composition material possesses certain properties which may require experimentation to determine by experience which process variables must be balanced in order to obtain a tube with the desired characteristics.
This consideration applies in particular to the quantity of gaseous cooling agent, the temperature at the edges of the die possibly being different depending on the materials or the thermoplastic compositions. By way of example, a list of thermoplastic materials which can be used in the process which is the subject of the invention, in addition to polyethylene, will be found below.

The properties of the. The thermoplastic material or composition can be modified, for example by the incorporation of suitable modifying agents: plasticizers, fillers, colorants, thermal stabilizers, antioxidants, etc.
The method described is particularly suitable for the manufacture of thin and continuous films or films, without support, in the form of a flattened tube. This tube can optionally be cut longitudinally to obtain a continuous sheet. Films, in the form of sheets or tubes, were obtained in various thicknesses ranging from 0.005 to 0.020 inches and more (0.012 to 0.5 mm).
