Funkenstreckeneinrichtung.
Spark gap device. The present invention relates to a spark gap device of the three-electrode type, as it is mainly intended for use in ignition systems of engines in which, for example, a control spark gap is required in series with an ignition spark gap.
The purpose of the invention is to obtain a spark gap device whose breakdown voltage is constant and which works very reliably.
The spark gap device according to the invention is characterized by two main electrodes, whose opposing working surfaces are flat and parallel to one another, one of the named main electrodes being designed in such a way that no part of the working surface of the second main electrode is facing any part of its working surface, a needle-like third electrode trode,
one end of which is in the immediate vicinity of the free part of the working surface of the second electrode and. is so far away from the first electrode that a short circuit of the main spark gap through the control spark gap of the third Elel -.- electrode is excluded, and through a vessel,
which contains an inert gas under pressure.
An example embodiment of the subject invention is shown in the accompanying drawings. This shows a longitudinal section in FIG. 1, a cross section in FIG. 2 and a view of a gap in accordance with the invention, while FIG. 4 shows how the effective parts of the gap device can be attached to their base.
In each of the two ends of a vessel a made of glass or some other suitable material, a metal rod b is inserted coaxially to one another and cemented airtight. The ends of these metal rods protruding into the vessel a are designed as flat, disk-shaped main electrodes c, d, with a diameter of about 3/4 a, made of tungsten or another suitable metal.
The electrode c has the shape of a segment of a circle of approximately 240, so that no part of the working surface of the electrode d is opposed by any part of the working surface of the electrode c.
At right angles to the two electrode rods b, a branch e is arranged on the vessel a, through which a third electrode f which is pointed at the front protrudes into the vessel. The tip of this electrode f is in the immediate vicinity of the covered working surface of electrode d and at a distance from the straight edge of electrode c,
which excludes a short circuit in the main spark gap due to discharge via the third electrode f instead of between the two main electrodes. The branch e of the vessel a also contains a resistor g, which preferably consists of carbon and one terminal of which is connected to the electrode f. The other terminal of the resistor g is connected to a point which has approximately the same potential as the rod b carrying the electrode c.
The vessel a is filled with a suitable indifferent gas - preferably carbon monoxide under a pressure which ensures the desired breakdown voltage between the main electrodes.
The vessel of the spark gap device can be attached to any suitable surface. This base is preferably provided with insulated pins, one end of which has terminals for connection to the outer ends of the metal rods b of the main electrodes.
In FIGS. 3 and 4, one of the two metal rods b of the main electrodes is connected to one of two terminals jz. These clamps are connected to a piece of metal j, which is screwed onto the base k, via rubber pegs i.
By means of a spring leaf m fastened to the base k, the electrode f is connected to the metal rod b of the main electrode c via the resistor g in a manner not shown. Appropriate means are provided to connect the terminals h and thus the bars b to the high-voltage line.
