<I>Beispiel<B>1:</B></I> Es wird eine.
Mischpolymers in ge, löster -and die Pigmentteilchen in disper- gierter Form enthält.
Pigment paste and process for making such a paste - US Pat. The present invention relates to an aqueous pigment paste which has the properties of a dispersant.
The pigment paste according to the invention is characterized in that it contains water, a powdery, water-insoluble pigment and a salt which has arisen from a base which is volatile at temperatures below 1000 C and a base made from styrene, maleic acid monomethyl ester and Ivlaleic acid mono, sec-butyl ester, the amount of this salt being <B> 1 </B> to <B> 50 </B> percent by weight of the amount of said pigment.
The present invention also relates to a process for the production of such a pigment paste, which is characterized in that - in powdery, water-insoluble, from styrene, maleic acid monomethyl ester and maleic acid monosec. butyl-, ester-made mixed polymer is added to an aqueous slurry of a powdery, water-insoluble pigment,
the mixed polymer is thoroughly mixed with the pigment and the mixed polymer is then made soluble by adding a base which is volatile at temperatures below 1000 ° C., the salt formed from the mixed polymer and the base in one Amount is generated which is <B> 1 </B> to <B> 50 </B> percent by weight of the amount of said pigment.
One of the recent developments in the area of top toe coatings is the use of an aqueous vehicle instead of an organic solvent as a vehicle for the surface coating material, resins, pigments, etc. Using water instead of organic solvents increases the cost of the coating material is reduced and the dangers based on the flammability of most organ-i- see solvents are eliminated.
In addition, the smells characteristic of organic solvents, which many people find annoying, are avoided.
The use of aqueous media was previously difficult due to the need to use protective colloids or dispersing agents in sufficient quantities to keep the pigments, resins, etc. in suspension during storage, transport. Since the function of these additives is to reduce the hydrophobicity of the resins, pigments, etc. to such an extent that they remain suspended in water, the additives must be at least partially soluble in water.
This solubility makes the finished coatings; sensitive to water borrowed, which significantly affects their effectiveness. In addition, most of the <B> '</B> have protective colloids and. Vigorous and long stirring is necessary for dispersants in order to produce a reasonably stable emulsion or dispersion.
The ax must be stirred vigorously so that the desired effect can only be achieved by using expensive and laborious equipment.
With the aid of the aqueous pigment pastes according to the invention it is now possible to disperse film-forming surface coating materials in aqueous media under conditions of gentle stirring.
The following examples are intended to illustrate the present invention. The quantities given in parts refer to parts by weight.
<I>Example<B>1:</B> </I> A. Paste is produced by first adding <B> 350 </B> parts of powdery lithopone, <B> 25 </B> parts of powdery bentonite, <B> 150 </B> parts of powdery mica and 20 parts of a powdery mixed polymer made from styrene and a half ester of maleic acid, of which <B> 25 </B> mol percent of its alcoholic radicals are methyl groups and <B> 75 </B> mol percent.
Secondary butyl groups exist, mixed in the dry state and then add 400 parts of water and 6 parts of ammonium hydroxide (28% ammonia) to this dry mixture while continuing to do so gently Stirring added.
The product obtained is an aqueous paste which contains the ammonium salt of the mixed polymer in dissolved form and the pigment particles in dispersed form.
The paste produced in this way can be used as a dispersant for the production of aqueous emulsions or dispersions of film-forming'0berflächenüberzugsmate, materials such as, for. B. liquid resins, dry oils, varnishes, solutions of solid resins in aqueous or organic solvents, etc., can be used to produce aqueous paints and paints in the form of oil-in-water emtilsionen herzu.
The dispersions or emulsions can be prepared by gently stirring the various constituents for a relatively short time. So you can <B> 110 </B> parts of a varnish which - as a film-forming component contains an alkyd resin modified with drying <B> oil </B> with a medium oil content, with the according to example <B> 1 </ Mix the paste produced while stirring continuously, but gently.
After a mixing time of about <B> 1 </B> hour, an oil-in-water emulsion is obtained that can be used directly as a coating material. <B> Coatings made from </B> this material have a smooth surface and are practically impermeable to water after the normal drying time.
In a similar way, drying oils can be easily and quickly emulsified with the paste according to Example <B> 1 </B> in order to obtain aqueous coating materials that dry to form water-insensitive smooth coatings.
<I> Example 2: </I> It becomes a pigment paste. produced by <B> 250 </B> parts of powdered titanium dioxide, <B> 260 </B> parts of water and 20 parts of a mixed polymer of styrene and a mixed k # lethyl-sec.-butyl-I- Best of all maleic acid should be mixed until the mixture is polymeric and the pigment is thoroughly blended. <B> 10 </B> parts of morpholine are then stirred in. With this paste according to the invention you can now z.
B. How to prepare a coating material - <B> 30 </B> parts of water and 120 parts of a plasticizer, namely butyl benzyl phthalate, are stirred into the paste until an oil-in-water emulsion is obtained. This emulsion is then mixed with <B> 320 </B> parts of an aqueous emulsion of polystyrene containing <B> 50% </B> solids and <B> 10 </B> parts of spruce oil, which acts as an antifoam agent, mixed up. While the pigment paste is being mixed with the additives, stirring is continued, but <B> gently </B>.
The product is an oil-in-water emulsion that can be used as a paint material. This material can be applied to porous or non-porous surfaces by dusting, dipping, rolling and other known methods, on which it dries to form a water-insensitive coating with a semi-glossy surface.
This emulsified coating material .ia.1 has the further advantage that it is insensitive to repeated freezing and thawing, <I> Example<B>3:</B> </I> A pigment paste is produced by <B > 250 parts of powdered titanium dioxide, 260 parts of water and 30 parts of a mixed polymer of styrene and a mixed methyl-sec-butyl-half ester of Maleic acid are mixed,
until the misehpolympr and pigment are thoroughly blended. <B> 11 </B> parts of ammonium hydroxide (28% ammonia) are then stirred into the paste, which causes the mixed polymer to dissolve in the water.
With the pigment paste according to the invention thus obtained. A coating material can be prepared as follows: <B> 10 </B> parts of spruce oil and <B> 90 </B> parts of Weiehmacher HB-40 (branded product, a partially <B> hydrated </B> terphenyl) stirred into the paste, <B>. </B> until an oil-in-water emulsion is obtained. This emulsion is mixed with 120 parts of a 4% aqueous emulsion of methyl cellulose, which has a viscosity of about 100 centipoise.
Finally, with continuous, gentle stirring, <B> 60 </B> parts of water and <B> 160 </B> parts of an aqueous emulsion of polystyrene containing <B> 50 </B>% solids are added. The product is an oil-in-water emulsion which can be used as a coating material and which has excellent resistance to freezing and thawing and can be used to produce a water-resistant coating with a semi-glossy surface .
<I> Example 4: </I> A pigment paste is produced by using <B> 250 </B> parts of powdered titanium dioxide, <B> 260 </B> parts of water and <B> 30 </B> parts of a Mixed polymer of styrene and a mixed methyl-se, k-butyl half-ester of maleic acid are mixed until the mixed polymer and pigment are thoroughly mixed.
<B> 11 </B> parts of ammonium hydroxide (2811% ammonia) are added to this paste, which causes the mixed polymer to dissolve in the water. With the pigment paste according to the invention thus obtained, a paint can be prepared as follows. will:
With continuous, gentle stirring, <B> 10 </B> parts of spruce 64 <B> 60 </B> parts of water and <B> 380 </B> parts of an aqueous emulsion of butadiene-styrene containing 45.0 / 9 solids are added - Mix the mixed polymer into the paste until an oil-in-water emulsion is removed.
The ratio of butadiene to styrene in the copolymer is 45:55 by weight. The emulsion obtained can be applied by known methods to porous and non-porous surfaces, on which it is borne to form a tough, water-insensitive coating a semi-gloss surface dries.
The emulsified coating material is extraordinarily resistant to repeated freezing and thawing. In addition, the coatings produced from this emulsion are unexpectedly resistant to alkalis. For example, a 50% solution of sodium hydroxide in water will only cause the dried coating to swell slightly.
<I> Example </I> 5: A paste is produced by using <B> 100 </B> parts of a powdery, water-insoluble toluidine dye, 200 parts of water and <B> 30 </B> parts of a mixed polymer made from styrene and a mixed methyl sec-butyl half ester of maleic acid.
After a short stirring time (about 4 to 5 minutes), 9 parts of ammonium hydroxide (28% ammonia) are introduced into the mixture in order to make the copolymer soluble.
With the inventive pigment paste obtained in this way, a printing ink can be prepared as follows: 100 parts of di-octyl phthalate and 400 parts of a solution of a soluble solids containing <B> 500 / a </B> Meltable butylated methylolmelamine in a mixture of xylene and butanol are added to the pigment paste.
It is continuously and gently stirred until the phase inversion occurs with formation of a water-in-oil emulsion (40 to 60 minutes). This emulsion can be used as a printing ink and is particularly suitable for printing on porous surfaces, for example on paper that has not been smoothed. The paint can be hardened by briefly heating it to T, em- perataren- from <B> 100 </B> to 20 <B> '00 </B> C, so that it changes into the insoluble, infusible state .
<I>Example<B>6:</B> </I> A paste is produced by adding <B> 100 </B> parts of a powdery, water-insoluble blue phthalbeyanine pigment, <B> 300 </B> parts of water and 20 parts of a misclip polymer of styrene and. a mixed methyl secAutyl half ester of maleic acid are mixed ge.
<B> 5 </B> parts of Ammo-L, iLimhydroxycl (281% ammonia) are added to the thick sludge obtained in this way in order to make the copolymer soluble. With the erlincl-Lingsgemässen pigment paste thus obtained, an overcoating material can be prepared as follows. <B> 1 </B> part of manganese naphthenate is stirred into the paste, whereupon <B> 300 </B> parts of linseed oil are added.
After about 30 minutes of gentle stirring, the pigment, the salt of the Üisell polymer and., The drying agent go into the oil phase. After a short time during which there is no stirring, the oil phase separates from the aqueous phase. The pigmented <B> oil </B> can be obtained by decanting. The product is a viscous, oil-based coating material that can be treated with more <B> oil </B> or with the usual solvents and.
Ver thinners, such as. B. turpentine, benzene, xylene, mineral oils, etc., who can be mixed to create an enamel containing linseed oil. When applied to a smooth surface, the enamel dries to form a tough, water-impermeable film. The procedure described in this example has the particular advantage that a pigmented oil enamel can be obtained without the usual tedious grinding of the pigments in the oil medium.
<I>Example<B>7:</B> </I> A paste is produced by mixing 200 parts of powdery ultramarine blue with <B> 250 </B> parts of water and 20 parts of a mixed polymer made from styrene and a mixed methyl-sec-butyl half-ester of maleic acid. After gentle stirring for a few minutes, 9 parts of triethylamine are stirred into the mixture in order to produce a soft pigment paste.
The paste can be used as an emulsifier in the production of paint materials in emulsion form by simply stirring the paste together with a resin7 or by mixing the paste with an already finished, non-pigmented emulsion of a coating resin. Another variant of the production of the paste-like dispersants according to the invention consists in adding the mixed polymer to the pigments during their production.
For example, numerous pigment production processes result in a suspension of finely divided pigment in an aqueous medium. It is customary to remove the water from the suspension and to grind the dry pigment before using it as a coloring substance. The pigment pastes according to the invention can be prepared by adding the mixed polymers to the aqueous suspension of the pig mentes and making them soluble, the operations of drying and grinding being superfluous and extremely finely divided pigments being obtained which have a better color than that conventional products.
<I> Example<B>8:</B> </I> An aqueous sludge of titanium dioxide, produced in the usual way by calcining crude pigment and grinding in water, is made by adding 20 parts of a mixed polymer Styrene and a mixed methyl-sec-butyl-half ester of the maleic acid per <B> 100 </B> parts of the titanium dioxide. By stirring gently it becomes.
<B> soon </B> a homogeneous mixture will be obtained to which <B> 6 </B> parts of ammonium hydroxide (28% ammonia) are then added. The resulting sludge is stirred for about 30 minutes in order to produce a pigment paste that has dispersing properties.
The copolymers used to produce the pigment pastes can be produced by esterifying maleic acid or maleic acid anhydride with a mixture of methanol and sec-butanol in an amount sufficient for the formation of a half-ester and by subsequent copolymerization of the half-ester with styrene. So one will heat <B> 1 </B> mol maleic acid together with about <B> 1 </B> mol of a mixture of methanol and sel # .- B-litano.1.
The mixture is preferably composed of about 25 mol%. Methanol ulld <B> 75 </B> mol% sec-butanol. However, ratios of <B> 11 </B> to 48 mol% can also be used. Methanol to <B> 89 </B> to <B> 52 </B> mol% sec-butanol can be used. The esterification proceeds smoothly without the aid of a catalyst.
The half-ester obtained in this way can be mispolymerized with styrene at <B> 80 </B> to <B> 1000 C </B> in the presence of a peroxide catalyst. The molar ratio of styrene to maleic acid i-ial ester is expediently <B> 1: 1. </B> A slight excess of styrene can be used which does not take part in the reaction and ultimately escapes from the product.
The mixed polymers are hard, clear, solid bodies that are insoluble in water. Since they are very brittle, they can be easily pulverized to a fine particle size. For the purposes of the present invention, the powder form is particularly expedient since it is important to mix the pigment and the mixed polymer as thoroughly as possible before solubilizing the mixed polymer. The salts of the copolymers are used in amounts of <B> 1 </B> to <B> 50 </B> parts per <B> 100 </B> parts of the pigment.
After preliminary suspension with the pigment, the mixed polymers are made soluble in water by adding at least 1 mol of a base to the sludge per mole of the mixed polymer, which is below 1000 C lying temperatures is volatile, is added. Such bases are, for example, ammonia, morpholine, alkylamines such as triethylamine.
An excess of ammonia or amine can be used, but this does not affect the solubility of the mixed polymer and subsequently evaporates.
The pigment pastes according to the invention are effective emulsifying and dispersing agents, which can be seen from the fact that the gentle stirring action, for example produced by a Ponymic or a Baker-Perkins dough mixer, is sufficient to produce emulsions. This eliminates the need to use colloid mills, etc., which generate an extremely strong stirring effect, but are expensive to install and maintain.
Another advantage of the pigment pastes according to the invention is that, after performing their function as a dispersing agent, when the coating material dries, they return to a water-insoluble state. The films produced in this way are impermeable to water.
In contrast, soaps and most synthetic detergents that are used as dispersants retain their water solubility even in the dried coatings, so that the coatings are water-sensitive and therefore cannot be used where there is high humidity.
One advantage of these pastes, which could not be foreseen, is that most of the coatings made from aqueous paint materials that are produced using the present pastes are resistant to alkalis.
After a coating has been produced and dried sufficiently to drive off the volatile salt-forming component of the paste, the styrene-maleic acid half-ester copolymers are no longer soluble in dilute alkalis and are only slightly swollen in concentrated alkalis. <B> - </B> Another advantage of the paste-like dispersants relates to the aqueous coating materials,
from these dispersants and aqueous emulsions of polymers and copolymers of vinyl compounds, such as. B. the poly styrene and B-LLtadiene-styrene mixed polymer em-Lilsionen of the examples are prepared. These coating materials, in the form of emulsions, are extremely resistant to repeated freezing and thawing if they are produced by means of the paste-like dispersants according to the invention.
This resistance to alternating freezing and thawing is particularly advantageous when storing and transporting the emulsified paint materials in wintry weather.
The pigment pastes can be made from inorganic and organic, water-Lin-soluble pigments, including organic dyes, which have been made insoluble by being converted into lacquer form. By using the method according to the present invention, one can easily obtain a soft paste in which agglomeration of pigment particles is kept to a minimum. In addition, the operation of grinding the pigments in the carrier, which is usually carried out, becomes superfluous for a long time.
As has been shown in the examples, the invention pigment pastes can be used for dispersing a wide variety of organic film-forming materials in aqueous media in order to produce aqueous paint materials which, after drying, are insensitive to water.
The only restrictions that apply with regard to the film-forming components that are to be processed into an aqueous coating material with the pigment pastes according to the invention are that they either have to be liquid at normal temperatures, such as B. drying oils, or must be convertible into a fluid form by dissolving them in organic solvents, such as.
B. the alkyd resin of Example <B> 1, </B> the T melamine resin of Example 5, or emulsified or dispersed in an aqueous Medi-Lun, such as. B. the polystyrene and the butadiene-styrene mixed polymer in Examples 2, 3 and 4.
The following film-forming components are embossed: drying and semi-drying oils - and mixtures of these oils, natural resins, saturated and unsaturated polyester resins, phenol-aldehyde resins, melamine-aldehyde resins, melamine-aldehyde-alcohol resins, urea -Aldehyde resins, urea- aldehyde-alcohol resins,
Polymers and mixed polymers of vinylidene compounds and suitable mixtures of the above compounds. Some of these resins require the addition of a plasticizer, such as B. partially hydrogenated terphenyl and butyl benzyl phthalate, which were Arwähnt in the examples.
The emulsified paint materials can be added either before or simultaneously with the incorporation of the film-forming components or other components customary for coating-forming materials. As examples of such additional components, desiccants, anti-foaming agents, viscosity-improving agents, etc. can be mentioned.
