Device for adjusting the height of the saddle of a bicycle. It is recognized that the best position of the cyclist is obtained with a saddle set high; but, especially in built-up areas, it is often necessary to set low to set foot on land more easily without risk of accident.
In addition, on long journeys, the fixed position of the saddle can cause crying or muscle fatigue.
Finally, when the same bicycle is used by several people, the same saddle setting is not generally suitable for all. The present invention a. intended to remedy. these disadvantages; its object is a device characterized in that between the seat post and the frame tube is. interposed a sleeve fixed in this last tube and in which the seat post can slide, a controlled lock of the gui don allowing the locking of the seat post in different positions, (so as to be able to adjust the height of the saddle during the walking the bicycle.
At the start, the cyclist sets it. saddle in the low position, then, lifting up. on the pedals, he lets go up. saddle at the height that suits it and locks it in that position. To be able to set foot on the ground in a congestion or for ashes, it suffices. pull the lock, your body weight lowering the saddle. The characteristics of the spring which tends to push back the saddle post can also be chosen such that, in low positions, this spring works like a real shock absorber, adding its action to the springs proper to the saddle, if the 'we maintain. the device in the unlocked position.
This property can be used to cross certain passages in poor condition with less rubbing; it may in particular find its application in cyclo-pedestrian crosses and in certain cycle races.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view showing the entire device.
lies fi g. 2, 3 and 4 are respectively the front view, the side view and the rear view of the tube supporting the saddle.
Figs. 5, 6 and. (are respectively the front view, the side view and the rear view of the tube forming the sleeve between the seat tube and the frame tube.
Figs. â and 9 are respectively the side view and the plan view of the worm member.
As can be seen in FIG. 1, in the diagonal tube 1 of the frame, leading to the pedal 2 of the bicycle, is fixed a tube 3 provided with a bottom 4 and forming. above the frame a certain projection, for example of the order of? cin, as would crumb ordinary seatpost in. her. position the phis low. In the tube 3 slides a tube por as the saddle 6 and coming to bear on a res out 7 which bears on the bottom 4 of the tube 3.
The tubes 3 and 5 have slots, the detail of which will be indicated later, for the passage of a lock 8, which a spring 9 tends to cause to penetrate into the slots of these tubes. This lock (see Fig. 8 and 9) laterally comprises bevelled projections 13 forming keys, of which. the aim will be explained below.
The saddle support tube 5 (see fig. 2, 3 and -1) has on its front face a longitudinal slot 10 provided at equal intervals with symmetrical lateral notches <B> II </B> for the passage of the lateral projections 13 of the lock. On its rear face, this tube 5 has a longitudinal slot 12, diametrically opposed to. the slot 10; for the passage of the body 8 of the lock. The tube 5 may have, for example, eight notches; such as 11, separated by an interval of about 12 mm.
The intermediate tube or sheath 3 (see fig. 5, 6 and 7) has, at its upper part and on its front face, a vertical slot 14 having a length equal to or very slightly greater than the length of the body 8 of the lock and provided laterally with two symmetrical notches 15 for the wise pitch of the lateral keys 13 of this lock. On its rear face, the tube 3 is provided with a vertical slot 16, of length equal to that of the anterior slot 10, for the wise pitch of the body of the lock.
The lock 8 is controlled from the handlebars of the bicycle using a lever (not shown) and a flexible transmission 17 not sant in a sheath 18 (FIG. 1) taking. bearing on a collar 19 fixed to the horizontal tube 20 of the frame, in a manner analogous to the usual control of the brake or of the derailer. In lady's bicycles where the top tube 20 does not exist, the control of the lock could be done very simply by turning the set of the two tubes around and passing the cable behind the down tube. 1, then bypassing the crankset to reach the fork through the lower rising tube <B> '</B> 1 of the frame.
In this case, the collar 19 is. replaced by a clamping piece fixed to the diagonal tube and serving as a stop for the flexible sheath.
In the example shown, the lock was assumed to be perpendicular to. the axis of the tubes 3 and 5, but it could be advantageous to incline it on this axis in order to reduce or eliminate the angle made by the cable 17 with the axis of the lock.
On the other hand, the spring 7, which has been shown here as unique, could be replaced by two superimposed springs of different strengths, so that the stronger spring could function as a damping spring for the low positions when the stronger spring. low is at the compression stroke end. Moreover, the spring damping could be combined with hydraulic damping, oil or grease.
It will be understood that with the adjustment device which has just been described, the lock 8-13 penetrating into the slots and notches of the tubes 3 and 5 under the action of its spring 9, blocks the mobile tube: 5 in the position height adjustment where it was brought. Unlocking will take place by acting on the handlebars on the flexible transmission 17 and 18 and will allow any variation in the saddle height adjustment at will. As soon as the action ceases on the handlebar control lever, the res 9 of the lock will trigger automatically. blocking at the. chosen setting position.
