Welding apparatus. The present invention relates to a welding apparatus, electric arc protected by an inert gas.
The process of electric welding using an electrode which does not consume during work and a protective gas such as argon or helium is well known. It is sometimes desirable to use filler electrodes and heretofore no satisfactory apparatus has been available which includes a filler electrode capable of being continuously advanced and allowing a steady flow to be obtained. arc protected by inert gas.
An object of the invention is. to provide such a device, which is. handy and easy to control.
Another object is to provide such an apparatus in which an electrode is supplied continuously from the outside to the point of use, a shielding gas also being supplied to the point. of use.
The welding apparatus according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a body having a cylindrical cavity, a part for supplying the current mounted in said cavity and at a certain distance from the wall thereof, said bringing room. current at the electrode and constituting a.
guide for the latter, and forming, in the cavity - the annular passage for the inert gas, and a nozzle constituting an extension of said passage and the length of which is, equal to several times the diameter of the electrode, the diameter interior of the nozzle being such that the nozzle determines with the electrode a step wise for an annular gas stream whose thickness at the outlet of the nozzle is at least equal to twice the diameter of the electrode.
This apparatus ensures the maintenance of a protective layer of inert gas effective for the arc, the outgoing gas. by a large single hole surrounding the electrode. The: gas stream is channeled in such a way as to ensure adequate protection by preventing the entrainment of air in the stream. gas at the outlet of the orifice, and so as to envelop the arc.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the object apparatus. of the invention.
Fig. 1; is a schematic view of a welding installation comprising the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device.
Fig. 3 is a section through the. line 3 of the. fig. 2.
Fig. -I is a section through the line -1 -.- 1 of fig. 2.
The installation shown in fig. 11 com takes a metal electrode .5 formed by a bare or covered wire which unwinds from a reel 6 mounted at. rotation on a support 7, under the action of rollers 8 driven by a motor 9. The speed of the motor is regulated by a centrifugal governor 7.0.
The electrode passes through a connector 11 which is connected to a flexible conduit 12, preferably a tube consisting of a steel tape wound helically and covered with rubber, and whose inside diameter is a little larger than the tube. electrode diameter. A connector 13 provided on the connector 11 constitutes an inlet orifice for the protective gas, argon or helium, coming from a suitable source as will be described below.
The flexible conduit 12 is connected to one end of the welding apparatus 14 comprising a stick 15. The electrode 5 is thus fed continuously into the welding apparatus to the point where the arc s 'was established. The arc is produced by the current coming from a welding group 16, such as a generator or a welding transformer, and brought by a conductor 17 surrounded by an insulating sheath 18.
A switch 19 comprising the contacts 20 and 21 is provided in the stick 15, and it is connected: to a push button 22. The contact. 20 is connected by a conductor 23 and a solenoid 24 to a conductor 25 connected to a supply network. Contact 21 is connected by a conductor 26 to a conductor 27 also connected to the supply network. A conductor 28 connects the conductor 25 to the regulator 10 and from there, through a conductor 29, to the motor 9. The other pole of the motor 9 is connected by a conductor 30 to a switch 31 which can close a -contact. 32 connected to conductor 27.
A contact 33 connected to the conductor 25 cooperates with a switch 34 which is connected by a conductor 35 to a solenoid 36. The: conductor 37 connects the solenoid 36 to the conductor 27. The switches 31 and 34 are actuated by the solenoid 24 When the latter is energized, by closing the switch 19, the circuits of the motor 9 and of the solenoid 36 are closed.
Solenoid 36 actuates a valve 38 which conditions the flow of protective gas from a cylinder 39 and passing. in a regulator 40, the gas then arriving at connection 13 and flowing to the welding device, at the point where the arc is established. By actuating the push-button 22, the operator can thus control the advance of the electrode and the gas supply.
The welding device 14 (Fig. 2 to 4) com takes a body 41 of insulating material, for example molded in the. desired shape and having a cylindrical cavity. The conduit 12 enters the rear opening of the welding device and screws onto a conductor block 4 ′. A conductive part 43 is fixed on the block 42 by a silver solder or by any other means having a low resistance to the current which is brought by the conductor 17 held by a screw 44 in the. conductive part 43.
The switch 19 is mounted in the stick 15, and the conductors 23 and 26 are connected to said switch. The conductors 23 and 26 are contained in an insulating sheath 45 which is. placed with the conductor 17 and its sheath 18 in an insulating sheath 46, so as to facilitate handling of the welding device. The stick 15 is iron mée by a plate 47 fixed by screws 48 and 49. An insulating sleeve 50 is provided around the sheath 46. A screen 51 is provided to protect the. operator's hand from the intense heat given off by the arc.
The apparatus comprises an extension 52 made of insulating material screwed at 53 onto the body 41 and comprising a nozzle 54 made of metal, for example copper, comprising. fins 55 to dissipate heat.
A part 56 for supplying the current is screwed into the block 42, the thread being interrupted to form channels 57 through which the gas supplied by the conduit 12 enters the space surrounding the part 56. The protrusion 52 carries a spacer: 58 which holds the part 56 in the. desired position and which includes channels 59 to allow the gas to pass to the nozzle 54.
Passage for gas extending. from room 58 to the exit of. nozzle 54 is united and has a considerable length and, as shown in fi-. 2, the thickness of this passage (that is to say the radial distance between the part 56 and the outer wall of the passage, and the radial distance between the electrode and this outer wall where the nozzle 54 extends beyond the end of part 56) is greater than twice the diameter of the electrode. As stated above, the apparatus comprises as electrode a bare or covered metal wire, of an ordinary type.
Such electrodes can have a diameter of 1.2 to 3.2 mm, and. a nozzle orifice having a diameter of about 12 nm is suitable and provides the desired low velocity for the gas stream surrounding the electrode at the outlet of the nozzle.
The channels 59 provided in the spacer 58 direct the gas axially towards the nozzle extending the passage for the gas and thus eliminate any rotation or disturbance in the gas stream which may have occurred in the passage between the end of the gas. conduit 12 and the spacer 58. It should be noted that these channels 59 are vented at the periphery of the passage for the gas inside the extension 52 and. that, therefore, the gas is directed axially. through these channels all along the peripheral part of the passage, so that the gas current has a normal regime through the nozzle.
The length of the passage for the gas included from the spacer 58 and the outlet of the nozzle is equal to several times the diameter of the electrode and, by its length, this passage tends to eliminate any disturbance. or any rotation of the gas stream before it reaches the outlet.
It should also be noted that the nozzle 5.1 constitutes an extension of said nozzle. passage for the gas, and that its length is equal to several times the diameter of the electrode, the internal diameter of the nozzle having a value such that it ensures an annular current of the inert gas, the thickness of which at the outlet of the nozzle is. at least equal to twice the diameter of the electrode.
At the entry point of the electrode 5, the connector twists Il (fig. 2). Includes a socket 60 in soft rubber and held by a plug 61, to make a watertight connection. gas. A connector 62 on the conduit 15 is held on the connector 11 by a cap 63 providing a gas-tight connection.
The internal diameter of the connector 11, like that of the conduit 12, is such that it allows the passage of gas around the electrode when the latter advances and, as indicated above, the gas flows around the electrode. current feed part 56 and opens into the surrounding nozzle 54. the electrode to ensure the. protection. of are. As has been said, the inert gas leaves the welding apparatus through a single orifice of large size relative to the diameter of the electrode. This point is essential for the gas to provide satisfactory protection, and the gas must be supplied to the orifice so as to flow at normal speed.
It has been proposed previously to use a converging nozzle providing around the electrode a passage for the gas, the thickness of which is not greater than the -diameter of the electrode, but although such a nozzle can be advantageous to produce a jet. high speed hydrogen or a. other reducing gas or gaseous mixture, the high speed nozzles are not satisfactory when it is desired to have a non-round inert gas envelope of bubbling tower in order to prevent air from being brought into the weld zone.
When a reducing gas is used, the air entrained in the high velocity gas stream can be swirled due to the reducing effect of the gas supplied to the nozzle. In the case of protection by inert gas, however, it is necessary to avoid the entrainment of appreciable quantities of air in the gas stream leaving the nozzle, and the apparatus according to the invention gives the desired result by ensuring at the outlet of the nozzle a gas stream of a large section and. having him normal speed and low speed.
The apparatus described is relatively light, it can. be easily handled by the operator, and it can be used in any position.
