On eoiigoit, en. effet. que de:; fibres de la génératrice extérieure du coude se ploient avec beaucoup plus (le facilité lorsque l'entre- Jambe du eoud@ plu,;
Process for the manufacture of a bent tube, apparatus for carrying out this process and bent tube obtained by this process. The present invention relates to a method for. manufacture of a bent tube with an internal radius of curvature less than one and a quarter times. the outside diameter of the tube. The invention further comprises an apparatus for carrying out this method as well as a bent tube obtained by the method.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that starting from a tube bent beforehand over a large radius of curvature, one creates a temperature difference between the. inner region of the elbow and the outer region of said elbow, and. the branches are brought closer to the elbow, without providing for it filling of any kind, using sliding parts which are applied to the branches of the elbow to bring it to the desired shape.
The apparatus which the invention comprises is characterized in that it comprises two metal plates :; parallel maintained at a distance corresponding to the outside diameter of the tube to be treated, and two sliders mounted so as to slide between these two plates, these sliders being shaped to be applied on the branches of the bend to be treated.
The bent tube which the invention also comprises is characterized in that the thickness of the wall of the tube in the vicinity of the generatrix 1a. outermost section of the elbow is substantially the same as that of the unbent tube, and in that the cross-section inside the elbow is substantially the same as that of the unbent tube.
The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, one embodiment of the method according to the invention as well as one embodiment of the apparatus for this implementation.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a tube previously. curved over a large diameter, the apparatus being shown in section.
The thread--. 2 is a section through 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of FIG. 1. Fig. 4- is a view, partly diagrammatic, illustrating the first stage of the process.
Fig. 5 illustrates the process in its final phase.
Fig. 6 shows, in section, the bent tube obtained by this process.
To obtain an elbow with a very small radius of curvature, we begin by manufacturing, by any process, or by the same process which will be described below, an ordinary hanger with a sufficiently large radius of curvature. .so that there is no appreciable thinning or flattening of the tube wall.
The elbow thus obtained is. placed between two metal plates b and c, firmly assembled to one another, and. kept at a distance from the outer diameter of the tube, as seen in fig. 2, for example by means of spacers cl provided with fixing bolts dl.
Between the two plates can be provided a groove roller e on which is applied. middle part of the crotch of the elbow a as seen in fig. 1 and 4, the diameter of the internal groove of the roller e being equal to the internal diameter of the final bend which is desired to be obtained. In addition, between the two plates b and c are. provided .two lateral slides or jaws fi, f2, mounted so as to.
be able to move in a translational movement between the two plates b and. c in the direction of the arrow .l (fig. 1) and vice versa. Each of these jaws comprises an arcuate face g, the curvature of which is adapted to that which the final bend must have externally.
The two jaws fi, f 2 may be movable or]. 'One of them may be fixed and the other mobile, but, .dans the latter case, the central roller e, instead of being fixed, is itself mobile, so as to be able to slide.
The operation of the apparatus described is as follows: The tube a having. been, during a preliminary process, -cented with a large radius of curvature, it is placed in the apparatus as indicated in figs. 1. and .1. The central roller.
e is provided, as seen in fig. 1 and 4, a notch h which reveals the part close to the internal generator of the elbow a., Or the crotch of the elbow. This part is then heated by any suitable means, for example with elia- lumeau, while the rest of the elbow a is kept cold. This heater could. of garlic their be prior to the arrangement of the tube clans the mold.
The two jaws f i, f '= are then brought together to one another to bring them to the position of FIG. 4 to the position of FIG. 5.
During this operation, the neighboring part .de the external generator said elbow a curves to. cold, or at a temperature lower than the rest of the elbow, and the result is that the wall of this region of the elbow thins as little as possible since it offers a resistance to crushing greater than that which 'opposes the crotch which is heated and, therefore, malleable folds.
We eoiigoit, in. effect. that of:; fibers of the external generator of the elbow bend with much more (the ease when the crotch of the eoud @ more ,;
softened does not oppose resistance to, bending, because the entire inner region of the elbow is. then as subtracted from the operation and the cold bending is reduced to that of the only outer fibers which can be bent as one would do with a bar of small diameter to be brought to a very small radius key curvature without noticeable thinning of the . wall.
Simultaneously, like the crotch .toit. push back when the elbow is brought to its final internal diameter, this small pushback takes place without difficulty and without wrinkling, due to the fact. (the progressiveness of the operation during, the sliding. of the jaws.
It is necessary. It should also be noted that this is achieved without the need to fill the inside of the elbow or tube with sand or the like, as is necessary in the known bending processes. The differential heating of the crotch of the elbow, compared to the outside, eliminates any filling.
When the operation is. finished, we get a hanger ai, as shown in section on the fit ,. 6, and whose soap (the inner curvature, is less than one and a quarter times the outer diameter chi tube.
It can be seen that the crotch 13 has an extra thickness which has the advantage of avoiding deformation during key subsequent uses of the elbow ai, while the. part close to the external generatrix, (', keeps the normal thickness of the tube. Flattening, that is to say the reduction of the internal section of the tube when it passes through the elbow. is reduced to a minimum .
In the event that tubes of very large internal diameter are being treated, instead of only heating the crotch of the tube, it may be advantageous to heat <first the entire tube before]. and, during the bending, cooling the region ('situated in the vicinity of the outer generatrix of the elbow, which region must retain its wall thickness.
This result is obtained from the fact that the lower temperature of this region makes it less malleable and. allows, moreover, to maintain the internal section of the hanger close to the normal section of the tube.
