Novel mixture of substances, which contains thermoplastic substances and plasticizers. Numerous plasticizers have already been proposed for introduction into materials containing organic thermoplastic substances, for example numerous esters, for example certain phthalates, such as cyclohexyl, octy 1 and dodecyl phthalates, phosphates, glycolates and citrates.
These compounds have been used as plasticizers for various organic thermoplastic substances, including cellulose derivatives, such as. B. cellulose acetate, cellulose acetobutyrate, cellulose nitrate or nitrocellulose and ethyl cellulose, also for polymers and interpolymers of various unsaturated compounds, such as vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate,
and for derivatives of these polymers and interpolymers, such as, for example, partially or completely hydrolyzed polymers and interpolymers of vinyl acetate and the corresponding acetal compounds, and for halogenated polymers of ethylene.
The vote. the plasticizer to be used depends on various factors, for example on the type of thermoplastic material used in particular which is to be plasticized, and on the use to which the product obtained is to be supplied. The plasticizer must be sufficiently compatible with the organic thermoplastic substance and must remain undissolved and be stable in the presence of any substances with which the material is likely to come into contact. In addition, the plasticizer must be held firmly by the material under the most varied of conditions.
The type and amount of '## @' eiehmacher used in a given material affect the physical properties of the material, such as flexibility, electrical resistivity, softening point and toughness, and to some extent its chemical properties such as durability and flammability.
In addition to the plasticizers, extenders for the plasticizers can also be introduced, for example chlorinated paraffin waxes, examples of which are described in British Patent Nos. 5738-10, 573841 and 579550, in order to increase the compatibility of the actual plasticizer with the thermoplastic substance or to reduce the flexibility of the material. While it is usually possible for most purposes to select a suitable representative from the plasticizers already known, in the case of certain applications it is not possible to find a satisfactory representative in every respect from the known plasticizers.
A compromise must therefore be made between different plasticizers for special purposes, taking into account the physical properties, accessibility and costs of the individual plasticizers.
The purpose of the present invention is. the creation of a novel substance mixture containing organic thermoplastic substances and plasticizers for the latter, from which objects of good mechanical properties and high electrical resistivity, especially objects that are soft and retain their flexibility at low temperatures, can be produced .
The mixture of substances according to the invention is characterized in that it contains at least two plasticizers, of which at least one is an ester which is derived from a nonyl alcohol and a; basic organic acid, and at least one other of which is an ester which is derived from a nonyl alcohol and a polybasic organic acid.
The use of nonyl esters of monobasic acids as plasticizers is described and claimed in Swiss Patent No. 274531. The use of nonyl esters of polybasic acids as plasticizers is. described and claimed in English Patent No. 632758.
The organic thermoplastic substance or the thermoplastic substances can consist of one or more natural resins or plastics, for example of cellulose derivatives such as cellulose nitrate or nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetobutyrate, cellulose ethopropionate, ethyl cellulose and benzyl cellulose, polyneses and interpoly more connections,
which the group
EMI0002.0025
contain, such as vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride and acrylic acid derivatives, for example methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, certain derivatives of some of these polymers and interpolymers, such as acetals of hydrolyzed polyvinyl ester derivatives, in particular butyrals, and also halogenated,
solid ethylene polymers and synthetic rubbers, for example the polymer of 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene and butadiene copolymers with styrene. or- Acrylonitril.- The plasticizers used for the materials according to the invention are of particular value when the organic thermoplastic substance of the materials according to the invention is a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride ..
The nonyl alcohol, from which the plasticizing ester is derived, preferably consists mainly of 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexanol, CH3. C (CH3) 2. CH.. CH (CH3). CH2CH20H, because the esters of this isomer improve the mechanical properties and the specific electrical resistance of the materials containing organic thermoplastic substances to a particularly high degree.
However, other isomeric nylon alcohols can also be present. In the synthesis of 3,5,5-triniethyl-1-hexanol, small amounts of the other isomeric nonyl alcohols are almost always formed. It has been shown, however, that for the preparation of the plasticizing nonyl ester, the alcohol can be esterified without prior removal of the isomeric alcohols, without the properties being significantly impaired.
However, the other isomeric alcohols are also suitable for carrying out the present invention. An additional advantage to the advantages already mentioned is that the materials which contain the phthalate of 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexanol are less prone to discoloration than similar materials which other types, such as, for example 2-ethylhexyl phthalate. It was also found that the materials according to the invention, the polymers.
or contain interpolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, have a better heat resistance than the already known materials made from these polymers and interpolymers with plasticizers.
Examples of monobasic organic acids which are suitable for the production of the ester softeners to be used in the materials according to the invention are formic acid, stearic acid, methacrylic acid, oleic acid, ricinoleic acid, lauric acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, caproic acid, Abietic acid, benzoic acid and chloro benzoic acids should be mentioned.
The preferred esters of monobasic acids are benzoate, chlorobenzoate, stearate and oleate of 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexanol.
Examples of polybasic organic acids which are suitable for the formation of the ester plasticizers to be used in the materials according to the invention are phthalic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, tartaric acid, succinic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid, aconitic acid and tricarballylic acid.
The preferred polybasic acids are phthalic acid, adipic acid and sebacic acid, especially phthalic acid.
As esters of polybasic acids, which are used for the materials according to the invention, any ester of a nonyl alcohol with a polybasic acid or any mixed ester of a nonyl alcohol and one or more other alcohols, which preferably contain 4 to 9 carbon atoms per molecule, such as Example 2-ethyl hexanol, and a polybasic acid ge suitable. By a suitable choice of the other alcohol or the other alcohols, it is possible, please include to obtain a plasticizer that is suitable for any particular purpose in a wide range of applications. suitable.
The preferred esters of polybasic acids are phthalic acid, adipic acid and sebacic acid (di-3,5,5-trimethyll-hexyl) esters.
Depending on the proportions of the main constituents and other constituents, the materials according to the invention can take the form of solid molding compounds, pastes, lacquers, solutions or dispersions. The relative amounts of the thermoplastic substances and the nonyl esters used to produce the materials according to the invention can vary within wide limits, depending on the particular properties that one wishes to achieve. These amounts are generally the same as those usually used with other plasticizers. will.
For most purposes, for example, weight contents of 10 to 60% of the total cattle in the materials are suitable. The relative amounts of the monobasic organic acid esters and the polybasic acid esters used also depend on the particular properties one wishes to achieve.
Some of the nylon esters used in the materials according to the invention are solvents for certain organic thermoplastic substances and can be used to prepare solutions of the latter.
Nonyl formate and nonyl acetate are solvents for ethyl cellulose, nitro cellulose, chlorinated polythene and copolymers made from vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate.
In addition to the organic thermoplastic substances and the nonyl ester plasticizers, the materials according to the invention can also contain other components, for example other plasticizers, extenders for the plasticizers, for example chlorinated paraffin waxes, stabilizers, fillers and coloring substances. When using polymers and interpolymers of vinyl chloride, it is often expedient to add a substance that acts as a heat stabilizer.
You can add any heat stabilizers for polymers and interpolymers of vinyl chloride to the materials according to the invention.
The materials according to the invention are suitable for all applications to which the already known materials made of thermoplastic resins and plasticizers are subjected, for example for compression molding, extrusion molding, the coating of cables, the production of coatings, for example in the manufacture of leather cloth, and for the production of hollow objects, for example according to the methods described in British Patent Nos. 521093, 591611 and 600270. Other uses and fabrication methods for which the present materials are suitable are described in British Patent No. 50029 $.
The materials according to the invention are particularly suitable for manufacture by calendering methods. The calendered products differ from the products made from known thermoplastic materials usually used to produce objects by calendering. improved mechanical properties. In addition, the materials according to the invention have a higher specific electrical resistance than materials of similar flexibility which contain the known, conventional plasticizers.
Another advantage of the materials according to the invention is that they "have a very low tendency to lose the plasticizer even after a long period of time, so that they do not deteriorate and do not age.
By using mixtures of various nonyl esters of monobasic and more basic organic acids, it is often possible to give the materials properties that could not be achieved in any other way.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples in which all parts are parts by weight.
Example 1: A material suitable for pressing out in the form of a band or other profiles is composed as follows: Poly vinyl chloride 100 parts Di-3,5,5-trimethyl-1-1-hexyl-plithalate 30 parts Nonyl-p-chlorobenzoate 30 parts white lead 8 parts titanium oxy d 3 parts palmitic acid ethyl ester 1 part The material is flexible and durable and has a hardness number (determined according to the method
as described in Britisli Standard Specification No. 903 of 1940) from 40 at 200 ° C. Example,?: A material made from the components listed below, which is suitable for the production of extruded cable sheaths, has great aging properties, heat resistance, toughness, abrasion resistance and flexibility at low temperatures.
Polyvinyl chloride 100 parts dinonyl phthalate 70 parts dinonyl sebacate 20 parts nonyl p-chlorobenzoate. 10 parts of kaolin 50 parts of bleissweiss 8 parts of palmitic acid ätlivlestei- 1 part of carbon black 1 part The nonvlesters used were obtained from a mixture of nonyl alcohols, which was predominantly 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexanol.
Example 3: A solution is prepared from the following constituents. The nonyl esters are derived from a mixture of nonyl alcohols, which is predominantly composed of 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexanol.
Nitrocellulose (which has a nitrogen content of 12 percent by weight and a viscosity of 40 cgs units, determined on the basis of a solution of 40 g of nitrocellulose in a mixture of 95 cm3 of acetone and 5 cms of distilled water) 10 parts of nylon acetate, 5 parts of dinonylphthalate, 5 parts of butyl acetate 27 parts of toluene 52 parts of butyl alcohol 8 parts Clear films are obtained from this solution by the solvent casting process.
Similar results are achieved if the nonyl acetate is replaced by nonyl formate, nonyl methaervlate or nonyl stearate, or the dinonylplithalate by dinonyl ladipinate or dinonyl sebaeinate.
