Device for the combustion of liquid fuel in a gas stream at high speed. The present invention relates to the combustion of liquid fuel in (valley streams of high velocity, e.g. in jet engines or similar plants.
The purpose is to increase the energy of such a current by providing means by means of which the ignition and subsequent combustion is ensured in a CTasstroin, the speed of which is high, especially in applications which both the speed of the gas flow and the required strength of the combustion can be changed.
High speed is understood here to mean that the speed of the gas flow in its main flow direction past a combustion zone, based on the ratio of the gas volume passing through in the unit of time to the cross-sectional area of the flow length, is at least ten times as large as the Cze speed the flame spread in the fuel mixture concerned and therefore strives to extinguish the flame.
In particular, but not exclusively, the invention is applicable to gas turbine jet engines in which fuel is injected into the air supply of a compressor and burned, the hot combustion gases driving a turbine, which in turn drives the compressor, and subsequently be expelled through an exhaust duct into the atmosphere to form a propulsion jet zii.
The device according to the invention for burning liquid fuel can be provided in the exhaust duct mentioned in order to increase the total thrust of the propulsion jet. It is clear, however, that such a device can also be used when burning fuel in an air stream, e.g. B. leaves a tunnel blower, or in the case of Zwischener- hit.zungen the working fluid in gas turbine power plants can be used ..
In a particular case of thrust increase, the operating conditions may be such that the strength of the combustion required changes over a wide range (e.g. with height) and also that the reheat fuel supply changes rapidly, e.g. B. can be quickly throttled, and: it is one of the requirements that in this case the flame is nonetheless maintained. The invention provides means that meet these requirements.
Accordingly, the device according to the invention for the combustion of liquid fuel in a gas stream of high speed is characterized by means for generating a stabilized flame zone within the stream, by means for introducing fuel into this zone and by further means for introducing fuel into the gas flow in an area downstream of this zone, so that a stable combustion of this fuel only takes place by igniting it directly at the flame of the stabilized zone.
The fuel can advantageously be introduced by means of a plurality of fuel nozzles arranged in such a way that the fuel is injected transversely to the gas flow and that the fuel jets meet in an area downstream of the stabilized flame zone. When using the device in a gas turbine engine, the means generating the flame zone are advantageously arranged at the rear end of the Ver cladding within the jet pipe.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, which shows a section.
The drawing illustrates the rear part of a gas turbine engine, part 8 being the rear part of the fairing which is usually arranged in the jet pipe 7.
In order to increase the energy of the exhaust gases, additional fuel, which is referred to as Naclierliitzungs fuel, is injected into the jet pipe 7.
For this purpose, a small auxiliary combustion chamber 23 is installed axially in the jet pipe 7, the open end 24 of which is located at the downstream end. The upstream closed end of the chamber 23 is equipped with a spark plug 25, which can be surrounded by a perforated screen 26, and an auxiliary fuel nozzle 29 is housed in the chamber 23, viewed in the direction of flow, a short distance after the candle 25, while the end "4 of the chamber, which with.
Holes 28 is provided, extends to a point which is a short distance from the main fuel nozzles 27 located behind in the direction of flow. The nozzles 27 are distributed around the circumference in such a way that the fuel is injected transversely to the gas flow and their fuel jets meet at a point shortly after the end of the chamber 24.
The fuel supply to the auxiliary fuel nozzle 29 can take place from the main fuel pump or any other source through a line which passes through the chamber wall 23; or the nozzle 29 can be fed with fuel from the main nozzle feed through a branch of the line which feeds fuel to the set of burner nozzles.
In operation, the fuel injected into the chamber 23 within the shield 26 through the nozzle 29 is vaporized in this chamber and initially ignited by the spark plug 25. A constant auxiliary flame burns, then at the end 24 of the chamber 23, which acts as a screen for the auxiliary nozzle 29 and generates the stabilized flame zone on its downstream side directed ge. The fuel injected through the main burner nozzle 27 gets into the auxiliary flame, whereby it is ignited and kept burning, so that the combustion is completed over a short length and only a small or no flame appears at the rear end of the jet pipe 7.
Since the auxiliary flame emanates from the end 24 of the chamber 23 and does not envelop the auxiliary nozzle 29, the latter is not clogged as a result of cracking of the fuel in the fine-perforated line feeding the nozzle.
