Ferner kann das als Ausgangsmaterial ver wendete Eisen andere Bestandteile enthalten oder mit solchen versetzt sein, z. B. Chrom bis zu 4 %, Molybdän bis zu 2 % und Vanadium bis zu 2 %;

Gray cast iron and process for its manufacture. The present invention relates to a gray cast iron whose properties are superior to those of the known cast iron, in particular with regard to freedom from casting defects, tensile strength and impact resistance, which properties can be accompanied by low hardness and good machinability.
The gray cast iron according to the invention is characterized in that it contains at least 0.02 percent by weight cerium and the free carbon is at least partially in the form of nodules.
The method for producing such a gray cast iron is characterized in that a molten iron, which during casting delivers a gray cast iron containing no more than 0.5% phosphorus, is given such an amount prior to casting Cerium is added, class the cast iron contains at least 0.021 / o cerium, and that the free carbon is at least partially in the form of knolllehen.
Any iron can be used as the starting material which, when solidified from the melt flow, yields gray cast iron; This Oraua iron can have a metal base that is either pearlitic, ferritic or a mixture of ferrite and pearlite, and it can also be austenitic or martensitic.
The phosphorus content will expediently not exceed 0.51 / o. Unless otherwise noted, all percentages below are to be interpreted as percentages by weight, calculated on the solid cast iron after casting.
In gray cast iron, the free carbon or graphite is normally present entirely or mainly in the form of lamellae. The effect of the added cerium is that it causes the graphite to appear at least partially in the form of nodules, i.e. balls instead of lamellas, and our tests have shown that in the presence of a suitable amount of cerium the free carbon during cooling after solidification predominantly or entirely takes on the form of nodules.
The presence of phosphorus counteracts this formation of nodules, since if it is present in amounts of more than 0.5%, it can prevent a sufficient amount of cerium from dissolving in iron at normal melting and casting temperature.
The sulfur content of the starting material should also be as low as possible, since the sulfur combines preferentially with the cerium, so that a considerable part of this is lost in the form of cerium sulfide, which, even if it is retained in the cast iron, is essential for the nodule- education is ineffective.
If, for example, the starting material contains more sulfur, a correspondingly larger amount of cerium has to be added so that the gray cast iron contains sufficiently effective, i.e. at least 0.02%, cerium. Since cerium is a very expensive material, it is expedient for economic and technical reasons
subjecting the feedstock to desulphurisation by any of the known methods prior to the addition of the cerium, so that the sulfur content of the feedstock does not exceed 0.02%.
The carbon content of the starting material can fluctuate within wide limits. He can z. B. be so high that it is a cast iron with about 2.0%, but also one with more than 4,
Provides 2% carbon. Good results have been obtained with hypereutectic iron-carbon alloys, e.g. B. with those that have a percentage of carbon after casting that is greater than 4.3 - - / 3 (P + Si), where P and Si mean the percentage of phosphorus and silicon in the cast iron.
If the alloy used is hypothetical, i.e. if the percentage of carbon in the alloy is less than the number given by the above formula, it is advisable that the alloy contains nickel in a percentage that is that a cast iron with 10 to 40% nickel is produced.
The starting material will of course also contain silicon, namely the silicon content of the same will expediently be 2.3 to 7.0%. However, we have observed that, for the purposes of the present invention, a content of less than 2.3% silicon can be compensated for (see example 7 below)
due to the presence of nickel and / or copper in suitable quantities (3% nickel and / or copper are equivalent to 1% silicon in this respect). However, a silicon-containing material can also be added to your molten starting material,
either before or more appropriately after the addition of the cerium (see below, Example 4). The iron used as the starting material can contain 0.5 to 7.0% manganese; such amounts do not affect the result of the process according to the invention.
Furthermore, the iron used as a starting material may contain other components or be mixed with such, eg. B. Chromium up to 4%, molybdenum up to 2% and vanadium up to 2%;
provided that these irons retain their essential character, that is to say that they provide gray cast iron, these elements also do not impair the effect of the improvement according to the invention.
The effect of the cerium in the formation of the nodular structure can be increased by treating the melt with an additive before the addition of the cerium, but it can be further increased by treating the melt with an additive after the addition of the cerium. Such additives can be those that favor the carbon precipitation, such as.
B. ferrosilicon, calcium silicide, silicon, aluminum, graphite or silicon alloys containing calcium, aluminum, Man gan, titanium or zirconium. In the presence of cerium, the carbon has a tendency to build up around cores in the form of nodules; if the metal treated with cerium is also treated with an agent that promotes carbon precipitation, the graphite is usually completely deposited in the form of nodules on the cores mentioned.
The cerium can be added in any suitable form, either as pure metallic cerium, as misch metal, ferrocerium, cerium carbide or as another cerium alloy. We prefer to avoid the use of magnesium-containing cerium alloys, since magnesium apparently makes it difficult to dissolve the cerium in the iron. If desired, the cerium can be used in the form of a reducible cerium compound.
As already mentioned, cerium sulfide is ineffective for the purposes of the invention and should be avoided. When the cerium is added to the molten iron, losses of the element mentioned occur which vary according to the type of furnace used. The losses are lowest when the iron used as the starting material is melted in a crucible furnace heated with finite gas or solid fuel or in an electrically heated induction furnace or in a rotatable furnace heated with liquid fuel.
Larger losses of cerium occur in directly or indirectly heated electric arc furnaces and in rotary kilns that are heated with gas or fuel in powder form. The losses are even greater if the metal is melted in the cupola furnace.
It is important to measure the amount of cerium to be added to the starting material. If only cerium is used as an additive and the cerium content in the (.; Castings is too high, white cast iron is formed. For a casting of any given cross-sectional size, there is a maximum limit for the cerium addition, which must not be exceeded. if the formation of white cast iron is to be avoided.
The cross-sectional size is to be understood as the thickness of the casting at the point of the smallest cross-section. The following table 1 shows the approximate maximum permissible cerium quantities for castings of various cross-sectional sizes that do not contain any other additives. Of course, the invention is not limited to flow pieces of any particular cross-sectional size.

<tb> 2.86 <SEP> to <SEP> 3.8 <SEP> 0.25 For each cross-sectional size, the minimum cerium content required to achieve the desired result is 0.02 to 0.03! o.
The addition of more than this minimum proportion, for example up to 0.5%, can, however, guarantee that each part of the casting has at least the minimum cerium content. In addition, as shown in Example 2 below, the addition of more cerium, within the stated limits, can increase the property improvement.
If the addition of cerium is followed by an agent that promotes carbon precipitation, the particles of which can possibly act as nuclei in the formation of nodules, then it is not necessary to limit the cerium percentage to the maximum values given in Table I, and the amount necessary to achieve the best mechanical properties can be added without the risk of the formation of white iron.
The types of cast iron produced according to the invention can, if desired, be subjected to a 1V heat treatment for the purpose of further improving their mechanical properties. Process for reducing stress, for softening by tempering, for normalizing, for deterring and. can be used for tempering to meet special requirements.
These processes do not change anything in the nodular structure of the carbon, but only influence the metallic Ctrundsulfance.
The cerium can be added to the molten iron at any temperature that is commonly used for cast iron prior to casting. The cerium dissolves to a satisfactory degree at all temperatures above 1200 C, but it is advantageous to use higher temperatures. In the case of hypereutectic cast irons, the cerium should be added before a significant amount of solid graphite has separated from the melt.
The cerium-containing cast irons produced according to the invention have improved mechanical properties, such as B. flexural strength, tensile strength, compressive strength, shear strength, impact strength, higher modulus of elasticity and higher fatigue strength at all temperatures. In addition, the metal shows a certain degree of ductility.
