Manufacturing process for vacuum tubes. The present invention relates to a method (the manufacture of an empty, tube.
Vacuum tubes are generally formed (the several parts which must be exactly exerted and arranged a-Li when the tube is assembled, so that the desired space between the various elements. is observed, in the case of empty tubes provided with a glass envelope, a deformation (this glass, when the tube is assembled wheat, causes often displacements of certain elements,
so that the characteristics offered by the completed tube are not always the same as those for which it was created.
According to the invention, the process (the manufacture of vacuum tubes, in which pre-formed pieces are used, at least two of which are made of glass, is characterized in that said pieces are placed approximately in their final positions, maintaining at least one of said glass pieces in a fixed position, then heating at least one of said pieces to cause softening of the adjacent glass and deforming said softened glass into one. now sealing all the parts in a fixed fixed relation with the fixed part.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, by by way of example, one way of carrying out the method, object of the invention. Fig. 1 shows an assembly for assembling the part of an empty tube comprising the element supporting the cathode and the grid.
Fig. -l 'represents an assembly to assemble the part of an empty tube comprising the element supporting Fanode.
Fig. ï refers to the complete assembly as well as the final assembly called tube.
According to the present invention, the empty Ù. tube may consist of several previously formed parts. Fig. 1 shows how to assemble the eone supporting the grid and the cathode. This wedge arrangement takes a tubular 10 glass member provided with a rim II extending externally at one of its ends-, and whose function will be described later, while at the other end, the member 10 comprises a thicker part forming a rim 12.
On the edge of the tube 10, near the edge 11, are provided Lin a number of notches 13. The tube 1.0 is rigidly concentrically supported with a stopper and guide pieceel4. The supports to hold the parts 10 and 14 in rigid fixed positions are not shown in the drawing and can be of any shape.
A conical metal part 15, for sealing the grid, is placed on the upper end of the tube 10 and this part is arranged to rest so to make contact with it on the inner edge 12 of the tube 10. An inner cover provided on the conical part 15 is arranged to be in contact with the surface part 14, and has a shaped part 16 used in the tube. Above the part 15 is placed an assembly plate 17 of glass to through which the supply conductors are sealed < B> 18 of the cathode, on which the cathode itself is mounted 19. This is arranged in a central housing 20 hollowed out in the part 14, in order to ensure the proper centering of this cathode.
The part 14 also has a ring 21, the upper face of which is curved so as to receive the ring 16 of the conical part 15, in the 1) C to center this part exactly in relation to to the cathode 19. The various parts of the assembly having been put in place, a treatment at hot is applied to the conical part 15, so, to soften the glass to the upper end of the member 10 and on the corresponding adjacent parts of the plate 1.7. The parts are then formed together to bring the glass more in contact with part 15 which is preferably made of copper,
and at the same time to cause a metal-to-glass seal between the components 10, 15 and 17, as is shown more clearly in fig. 3. As the organs are pushed down and the seal is made, the cathode 19 reaches the bottom of the housing 20; the initial space between the thodet and the bottom of the housing being left just sufficient to allow the desired deformation of the glass and to form a good seal.
At the same time, the part 15 is forced downwards and comes into contact with the ring 21, spacing #, thus suitably ant the support of the grid 16 by comparison # t at the cathode, 1.9, not only longitudinally, but also radially. When the members are assembled, the 15 grid support and 19 cathode are suitably spaced relative to each other and compared to tube 10, for a complete assembly of the tube.
A process similar to that shown in in fig. 1 is used to construct the anode end of the tube. This process is shown in in fig. 2. A generally tubular glass member 10a is formed in substantially the same manner as member 10 of of FIG. 1 with an outer rim 11 and notches 13. . The anode 22 is provided at its lower end top of a rim 23 extending outwardly and which preferably has substantially the same shape as the, cone 15 of the fig. 1.
It is obvious that this anode rim can be provided in any other part of the anode, depending on the shape which one wishes to give to the tube. The anode 22 is placed so that the edge is in contact with one end of the tube 10a.
On the outer surface of the rim 23 is placed a glass ring 24 which may be necessary, if the metal of the rim 23 is copper, in order to complete the metal-to-glass seal. To complete the assembly of the anode, the tube 10a is held in a fixed position relative to a stopper, not shown in the drawing, and which consists , preferably, in a member extending into the opening of the anode 22, leaving sufficient space, at the end of this opening to allow a good seal between the parts 10a, 23 and 24, but stop the downward movement of the anode 22 at the point where the anode will be suitably spaced from at,
the cathode-grid assembly constructed following the fing. 1. Q; When these two parts of the tube have been constructed as just explained, the tubular parts 10 and 1 Oa scnt placed ( one above (the other in alignment, as shown in fig. 3.
Therefore the anode 221 is suitably spaced relative to the cathode, 19 and the grid 30 which has been mounted. on 1, # cone-support 15. When this is done, the fixed ends of the tubular parts 10 and 10a serve to space suitably and longitudinally all the elements of the tube. At the same time, the edges 11 and 11a extending outwardly are brought together, but do not touch each other. The tube thus assembled is heated so as to soften the edges 11, and 11a.
These are then deformed and brought into fun contact with the other \ thus completing the sealing of the two parts of the tube. The notches 13 and 13a are provided so that, after the tubular parts have been assembled, the evacuation (the Vair can be done easily in the whole. (read tube. The openings formed by these notches allow gas, which would otherwise be retained in the space formed by the edges 11 and ] there, to enter rapidly in the pi-hieipale part of the tube and then be discharged.
If the notches did not exist, the slow filtering (read gas at across the sharp edges #n 1 of parts 10 and l0a would increase unduly. Ip time required for the evacuation of Fair from the tube.
It is evident that the manufacturing method described here for a particular type of empty tube can be applied to (tubes of any kind.
The main fact lies C in the manufacture of parts 4, trimmed with the tube (the way that the tube, as a whole, is quickly assembled, and that by a simple and exact operation which ensures Fes- paeement eorreet (the all constitutive elements.
