I>+V</I> +JI, (n-1)kV+-1T+lI... 2k-V+V+I1I, W+V +3l,
I>V=</I> l', li <I>=1,</I> 1I <I>= 0.</I>
(n - 3)</I> 1l, <I>(n-2) U, (n-1) U,</I> nU (n-1) <I>U... 3 U,</I> <I>2 U, - U, O,</I> + Z", etc., les inducteurs étant pris dans l'ordre où les rencontre un même transporteur tournant dans le sens générateur.
-V, kV-V, 2kV-V, 3kV-V... (n.-2)kV-V, (n-1)kV-V, nkV+V, (n-1.)1;:V+V, (n-\?)kV+r... 2kV+V, kV +V, -V, kV-V, 2kV-V, etc.
2, on pourra, par exemple, porter les in ducteurs aux potentiels -1', 0,<B>3U,</B> 2f', <B>-- Ti,</B><I>0, 3</I> LT, <I>2</I> TI.
Electrostatic machine. The present invention relates to an electrostatic machine in which the inductors and the carriers are conductors, these inductors and these carriers together forming variable capacitors with a fluid dielectric of constant thickness, the electrodes possibly being flat or cylindrical.
In the description which follows, inductors are used to denote the members, fixed or mobile, of such a machine which, during its operation, are brought to a given potential with the aid, for example , one or more external sources of electricity, these elements cooperating with the carriers which are iei constituted by conductors organs.
When, in machines of this type, also called capacitor machines, the dielectric strength of the fluid medium in which these machines work is used to the maximum, the minimum thickness of fluid dielectric separating the transporters from the inductors must be as much larger than the potential difference provided by the machine is higher. The increase in this thickness has the effect of reducing to a certain extent the maximum admissible electric field in the fluid dielectric, which correspondingly decreases. the specific power proportional to the square of this field.
At the same time as the minimum thickness of the fluid dielectric, it is necessary to increase the thickness of the conductive transport members, which leads to an increase in the friction losses in the fluid dielectric and to a decrease in power, due to the increase in parasitic capacitances.
The present invention provides the means of avoiding the increase in the minimum thickness of fluid dielectric with voltage and, consequently, of remedying these drawbacks. In practice, it makes it possible to establish capacitor machines providing very high voltages with a specific power and an efficiency as high as those of machines with relatively reduced voltage.
The electrostatic machine according to the invention is characterized in that (read the inductor members comprise at least one series of n inductors following each other in the direction of rotation of the machine operating as a generator, brought to increasing potentials from one inductor to the next in this direction, and in that the n inductors are brought to.

means being provided to connect each conveyor to one of the poles of the machine from the moment when said conveyor is partially opposite the inductor at the potential -V + II, of a sufficient quantity so that its potential is substantially equal to II, until the moment when the capacitance between the carrier and said inductor. begins to grow, and at the second pole of the machine after said conveyor has sufficiently passed the last inductor in the series for its potential to reach nkV.
It is also possible to have, immediately after the inductors brought to increasing potentials, in the direction of rotation of the machine operating as a generator, a second series of n inductors connected to electrical sources capable of giving them respective potentials. nkV <I> + V </I> + JI, (n-1) kV + -1T + lI ... 2k-V + V + I1I, W + V + 3l,
the means arranged to connect each transporter to the second pole of the machine coming into play when the transporter in question has passed the last inductor of the first series, and is engaged with the first inductor of the second series, arranged for this purpose so that the potential of said transporter has substantially reached itkV + JI, and to maintain this connection until the capacitance between the transporter and said inductor at potential nkV + V + Dl begins to decrease.
The alternation of the series of inductors thus formed can be repeated several times for a single revolution of the machine, the members for bringing the carriers into contact with one and the a-Liter pole of the machine being multiplied in such a way. corresponding. The appended drawings show schematically two exemplary embodiments of the machine according to the invention. In these drawings, Fig. 1. is a schematic perspective view of a machine comprising inductors raised to increasing potentials. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a machine comprising inductors brought to increasing potentials, then decreasing potentials.
The machine shown in fig. 1 coin- carries four inductors 1,?, E, 4 each formed of two parallel conductive blades fixed in an insulating manner on the frame 5 of the machine, and six conveyors formed elia- ment by a conductive sector 6 mounted in an insulating manner on the shaft 7 of the machine which pivots in bearings carried by the frame 5.
Each conveyor 6 is electrically connected to a conductive sector 8 embedded on the end face of an insulating cylinder 9 wedged on the shaft 7, the opening angle of each sector 8 being the same as that of the sector constituting the conveyor 6 corresponding. These sectors 8 cooperate with two brushes 10 and 11 supported by an insulating dewlap by the frame 5.
The brush 10, connected to the ground, is arranged to come into contact with the sector 8 when the corresponding conveyor 6 begins to penetrate between the blades of the inductor 1, and the brush 1.1, connected to the isolated pole of the machine. , is arranged to come into contact with a sector 8 shortly after the start of the exit of the corresponding conveyor 6 between the blades of the inductor 4, the moving parts rotating in an anti-clockwise direction.
The machine operates, as a generator, from the salivating dewlap: 2 Z 'being the maximum difference in potential that can safely reign, during normal operation of the machine, between an inductor and the conveyors which are closest to it, we bring the inductors 1,?, and 4 respectively to the potentials: -I ', 0. + L and 2 Z ". (This means that in the general formula we admit <I> V = </I> the , li <I> = 1, </I> 1I <I> = 0. </I>
When a conveyor 6 enters between the blades of the inductor 1, it is placed vn. relation with the ground via the corresponding sector 8 and the broom 10 and it takes a load approximately equal to <I> C. U, </I> C being the. maximum capacity that little wind achieve a carrier and an inductor. When <B> the </B> transporter in question begins to exit from inductor 1, its relation with the ground is cut and its potential rises, this rise continuing due to the passage of this transporter between the blades of the inductors. teurs 2, 3 and 4.
Indeed, when said transporter is inside inductor 2 a potential 0, its potential is + Tr, when it is in inductor 3 at potential + [T, its potential is 2LT and, finally , when it leaves the inductor 4 ,, which is brought to the potential + 2 U, its potential rises again <B> î </B> -tu-beyond <I> 3 </I> LT in tending to 4 U.
It is noted that, thanks to the arrangement adopted, the potential of a conveyor is brought to this latter value without, however, the difference in potential between an inductor and the conveyor (s) which are located between the blades of the latter exceeding the maximum admissible value 2 Tr.
When the conveyor considered above has reached., In its exit movement between the blades of the inductor 4, a potential close to <I> 4 </I> Tl, it is put in relation with the isolated pole of the machine, by the intermediary of the corresponding sector 8 and of the brush 71, the position of which has been determined for this purpose, and this relation lasts until said conveyor is entirely out of the inductor 4. The isolated pole thus receives the charge brought by the conveyor under a potential which can reach <I> 4 TT, </I> instead of TT in the case of an ordinary machine, with the same dielectric gap between inductor and conveyor.
When the relationship between the transporter and the isolated pole has been broken, the potential of the transporter is rapidly lowered. as soon as the latter approaches inductor 1 at potential - U. The transporter is then put back into contact with the ground and the cycle begins again.
The value of; potentials to which are carried, the different inductors has been indicated ei-des @ us only as an example and one can choose, polish these inductors, potentials which are not integer multiples of U Thus, the application of the invention can be varied in many ways.
One can, for example, choose for the inductors potentials which are not integer multiples of Û. If we take the first inducer 1 to a potential -V different from -U and if we define a parameter k by the equality <I> 2 </I> LT <I> = </I> kV <I> + V, </I> the potentials of the other inductors can be, at first approximation: kV - V for 2, 2 kV - V for 3,; <I> 3 </I> kV-V for 4. A transporter then takes, in inductor 1, a load approximately equal to <I> to C.
V and a, </I> as potential, kV when it is inside the inductor 2, 2 kV when it is inside the inductor, 3, and so on. The difference in potential between an inductor and the conveyor (s) which are located between the blades which constitute it therefore never exceeds <I> 2 U = </I> kV <I> + V, </I> provided that the voltage chosen for the operation of the user device is not greater than 4kV. The power of the. machine depends on the value chosen for the factor k.
We can easily see that the intensity is proportional to 2 / k + 1. and the maximum voltage to 2 klk <I> + 1, </I> so that the power is proportional to <I> 4 </ I> k / <I> (k + </I> 1) z, maximum quantity for k = 1. The existence of parasitic capacities between the soil and the transporters as well as between the transporters themselves means that the maximum power generally occurs for a value of k less than 1.
The same constant (31) can also be added to all the indicated potentials. If this constant is - 2 kV, the machine has two poles at potentials close to + 2 kV and - 2 kV. If this constant is <I> - 4 </I> kV, the machine has one pole at potential -4kV and the other at potential 0. If the constant is any, we have asymmetric bipolar operation.
The excitation of inductors 1, 2, 3, 4 can be obtained, for example, by means of auxiliary generators, which can be low power capacitor machines.
The excitation of inductors with a potential between 0 <I> and 4 </I> kV can also be borrowed from the main machine by using auxiliary brushes making contact with the conveyors when their potential is equal to that of the inductor to which each brush is connected. To obtain any intermediate voltage between the flow voltage and 0, it suffices to have lux isolated brush coming into contact with a pad connected to one of the carriers. By modifying the position of the broom, it is possible to adjust the ins and the contact. voltage obtained.
Experiments were carried out on a machine similar to that of the fis. 1 obtained by transforming a rationally constructed Toepler-type machine, that is to say having inductors and carriers having a thickness of the order of magnitude of the thickness of the dielectric which separates them and whose edges have a rounded profile preventing the electric field from taking on these edges a greater value than in the thickness of the dielectric which separates the parallel faces of the inductors and the carriers. This machine had eight conveyors of approximately 45 "each comprising five parallel blades. The outside diameter of the assembly was 34 cm.
In compressed air at 30 atmospheres, the minimum thickness of the dielectric separating an inductor from a carrier corresponded to a maximum potential difference of approximately 120 kilovolts, which led to take a flow potential of 50 to 55 kilovolts. , to obtain maximum power.
By arranging, instead of four usual inductors separated by free intervals of about 45, six close inductors and brought respectively to the potentials of - 70, - 20, + 30, 80. 130, 180 kilovolts, the flow voltage has could be brought to 300 kilovolts with an intensity of 0.9 milliampere at the rotational speed of 1400 revolutions per minute, or a power of 270 watts. The flow voltage has been multiplied by 6.
For the excitation of the inductors at potentials of - 70 and - 20 kilovolts, a single auxiliary generator was used, directly supplying the voltage of - 70 kilovolts, that of - 20 kilovolts being obtained by a resistance voltage divider. The other inductors were energized by the main machine with the aid of another resistance voltage divider connected between the pole at the potential 300 kilovolts and the ground.
The machine shown in, FIG. 2 comprises eight inductors designated by the references 1 to 4 and 12 to 15, each made up of three parallel conductive blades, mounted in an insulating manner on the frame 5 of the machine, and an equal number of conveyors 6 each formed of two conductive sectors mounted on the insulating Tacon shaft 7. As in the machine shown on the fib. 1, each conveyor 6 is electrically connected to a blade 16 which occupies on an insulating cylinder 17, wedged on the shaft 7, an arc of a circle corresponding to the opening angle of the sectors forming the conveyor in question.
These blades 16 cooperate with brushes 18 and 10 fixed in an insulating manner on the frame 5 of the. machine. The brush 18 is connected to the ground and is arranged to come into contact with a blade 16 when the corresponding conveyor penetrates between the blades of the inductor 1. The brush 19 is, for its part, electrically connected to the isolated pole of machine and is arranged to come into contact with a blade 16 shortly after the corresponding conveyor has started to come out of the inductor 4 with the moving parts rotating counterclockwise.
The machine thus constituted operates, as a generator, as follows: - 2 U again designating the maximum difference in potential that may exist between an inductor and the carriers which are the closest to it, we carry, as in the case of the fib . 1, inductors 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively at potentials - T- ', 0, + T' and 2 I ', inductors 12, 13, 14, 15 being respectively brought to potentials 5 T', 4 Lr, 3 Z 'and 2 T'.
The machine being rotated in the anti-clockwise direction, a conveyor, entering the inductor 1, receives a load + Q approximately equal to C. TT and follows the described cycle. with reference to fig. 1 with regard to its increase in potential, the latter tending successively, at the output of inductors 1, 2, 3 and 4, towards the values <I> + U, 2 </I> ZT, <I> 3 </I> Tr and 4 U.
When the potential reaches 4U, that is to say when the transporter in question begins to leave the inductor 4 and to enter the inductor 12, said transporter is put in relation with the isolated pole via the corresponding blade 16 and the brush 1.9 and this relationship is maintained as long as the capacity constituted by the inductor 12 and the conveyor increases, the brush 19 being arranged accordingly.
The quantity of electricity carried by the conveyor during (the sound entering inductor 12 was + Q and, when it begins to leave said inductor and its relation with the isolated pole ceases, it is appreciably -Q. quantity of electricity delivered is therefore 2 Q instead of Q: it has therefore been doubled.
The subsequent passage. of the transporter considered in inducers 13, 14 and 15 has the effect of gradually reducing its potential to zero before this transporter begins the cycle which has just been described. Indeed, when the carrier is inside the inductor 13 brought to the potential <I>4</I> <B> fi, </B> its potential is 3 U; when it is inside 14 at the potential 3 U, its potential is 2 l ', and so on. When the carrier has sufficiently penetrated into inductor 1 at potential -U, it is put in contact with the ground, and the cycle begins again.
In general, to obtain the difference in potential <I> n U </I> with the ground, we can take a machine having 2 inductors or a multiple of 2n.
These inductors are then brought to the potentials - U, <I> 0, + U, 2 U ... (n - 3) </I> 1l, <I> (n-2) U, (n-1) U, </I> nU (n-1) <I> U ... 3 U, </I> <I> 2 U, - U, O, </I> + Z ", etc., the inductors being taken in the order in which the same conveyor rotating in the generating direction meets them.
We can also choose, for the inductors, potentials which are not integer multiples (the Z%. If we take the first inclite- tor to the potential -V instead of -U, by defining a parameter 1c by] 'equation <I> 2 </I> I7 <I> = </I> kV <I> + V, we </I> can take the inductors, taken in the same order as above, to the potentials:
-V, kV-V, 2kV-V, 3kV-V ... (n.-2) kV-V, (n-1) kV-V, nkV + V, (n-1.) 1;: V + V, (n - \?) KV + r ... 2kV + V, kV + V, -V, kV-V, 2kV-V, etc.
The potential of a transporter will be 0, 7;, V, (nl) l,; V, nl: V, (@ a = 1.) Lsy '... 2k7, kV, <I> 0, </ I > kV ..., so that the flow voltage will be close to nkl 'instead of n1 ", while the load of a carrier will be C. V instead of <I> </I> C I7 The power of the machine will depend on the parameter k, as indicated above.
We can also add to all the indicated potentials the same constant, of any value.
The excitation of the inductors can be obtained in a similar fashion to what has been expected. for the machine shown at fis. 1.
Experiments were also carried out on a machine similar to that of the fis. 2 obtained by transforming a rationally constructed Toepler-like machine. This machine had eight conveyors of approximately 45 comprising each five parallel blades. The diameter of the assembly was 34 cm. In compressed air at 30 atmospheres, the minimum dielectric thickness separating a carrier from an inductor corresponded to a maximum potential difference of approximately 120 kilovolts.
By arranging, instead of the usual four inductors separated by intervals of about 45, eight inductors with potentials of - 70, - 20, + 30, 80, 270, 220, 170, 120 kilovolts, the output voltage was d 'approximately 200 kilovolts, with an intensity of 2.3 milli amps at the rotational speed of 1400 revolutions per minute, or a power of 460 watts.
By further coupling the inductors to potentials of - 70, - 20, 170, 120, - 70, - 20, 170, 120 kilovolts, the voltage was about 100 kilovolts, that is to say half of what gave the previous coupling, but the current was 5.1 milliamperes at the same speed, or a power of 51.0 watts. The power was slightly greater in the second coupling because the influence of stray capacitances was weaker.
The present invention applies not only to electrostatic generating machines with conductive carriers, but also to any electrostatic driving machine with conductive carriers. It is possible, for example, to operate the machine shown in fig. 1 as a motor, by bringing inductors 1, 2, 3, 4 to the potentials <B> -U, </B> 0, <I> + </I> LT, <I> 2 </I> TT, as previously, and by supplying both the isolated broom 11 using a source providing a potential difference 4U with the ground.
The machine will run as a motor, turning in the opposite direction to the generator direction. The presence of inductors 2, 3, 4 at potentials <I> 0, Ti </I> and 2 U makes it possible to supply the machine under voltage 41T, while the minimum thickness of fluid dielectric separating an inductor from a In an ordinary machine, the transporter would only allow a supply voltage (the order of U only.
Likewise, as regards the machine shown in FIG. 2, by supplying the brush 19 with a source providing a potential difference 41T with the ground, and by bringing the inductors 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 13, 14, 15 to the potentials - U, 0, + as before U, 21.-, <B><I>5U,</I></B> <I> 4 </I> LT, 311, <B> 2U, </B> the machine will work as a motor, by turning in the opposite direction to the generator direction.
Thanks to the presence of inductor 12 at potential 5 U, on the one hand, and that of inductors 13, 14, 15 at potentials <B> <I> 4U, 3U, </I> </B> 2 U, on the other hand, carriers are subjected to the same electrostatic forces, when their potential. decreases from <I> 4 U to 0 </I> and when it rises from 0 to <B> 4U. </B> This results in an increase in engine torque and, consequently, in engine power , at equal speed. This increase in motive power is accompanied by a corresponding increase in intensity and, consequently,. of the electric power absorbed.
In general, all the methods of application of the invention, indicated for generating machines, such as, for example, the values of the potentials, the number of conveyors and inductors are valid for driving machines.
As we have already seen, the same machine is capable of different couplings, giving various voltages and intensities, the power supplied remaining sensu @ l Binent l a. even. In the case of the machine shown in fig. 2, we can, for example, take the drivers to potentials -1 ', 0, <B> 3U, </B> 2f', <B> - Ti, </B> <I> 0, 3 < / I> LT, <I> 2 </I> TI. The voltage supplied would be <B> 2l '</B> instead of 41T, but, on the other hand,
the intensity available would be doubled compared to the previous range neck, because there is now enough tooth. exceeded the last It should.
Adding two additional brushes, of course, ensures that the carriers are electrically connected by means of connections, which, in the second mode (the is constantly being found, during operation, at the same potential.
