Composition for obtaining an electrically semiconducting mass. The present invention relates to a composition for obtaining a semi-conductive muse intended for the protection of the insulation of electrical appliances with the aim of preventing the formation of vapors. in high voltage conductors.
The formation of corona in Kectrics apparatus limits the voltages allowed since these corona tend to destroy the organic isolation of high voltage organs exposed to l atmosphere or to another fluid g "them. Lets-effluvia are produced in electrical devices when the surface, of, electrical insulation exposed to the atmosphere or to another gas has an electrostatic voltage gradient such that the molecules of oxygen or another gas - are made highly active,
electrically or chemically. So, for example, when air is subjected to such voltaic gradients, it forms ozone and nitrogen oxides which react with the vapor. water in the form of oxidizing acids which destroy organic isolation.
Since the organic insulation constitutes the main part of the insulation in most current electrical appliances., The formation of corona is a limiting factor in the voltage allowed in the electrical conductors. --etrique-s. The use of voltage exceeding the values at which the scents are produced can have as a consequence a destructive action of the organic insulation of the conductors such as, in some rjm,
if the isolation is completely orgianic, it is destroyed after some mold or made defective to the point of being ineffective. When an inorganic material, such as mica, is used as isolation in combination with organic substances, destruction is limited to organic isolation. However, it requires frequent overhaul of the device.
It is # known to protect these insulations by covering them with a semi-conductive # paint in order to reduce the electrostatic potential on surfaces exposed to air or to < / B> another gaseous fluid. Although in theory the application of such semiconductor materials appears to be simple and easy, one encounters unexpected difficulties in practice.
The choice of semiconductor compositions, those having an appropriate resistance to reduce the electrostatic potential below the values at which the corona forms, is limited by the fact that the co-compounds of low resistance do not reduce sufficiently. the potential, tan-say that the compounds,
of medium resistance allow relatively intense currents to flow along the coating of the conductors and cause excessive heating. As is well known, high temperatures are as destructive as the formation of scent.
It has been discovered that, for conductors subjected to to -voltages of the order of 6600, volts or higher, the semiconductor positions must, preferably #, have a surface resistance of the order of 1 to 1000 megolims per em2 for a film -with a thickness -from 0.075 to 0, j </ B > mm, in order to avoid excessive heating -and the forma, tio, n of scent.
By tests it was possible to note -that the application of certain compositions containing mant; for example charcoal in combination with a binder, such as a varnish, insulated superconductive to produce semiconductor keys having a resistance of 1 to 1000 megohms relatively to, < / B> a film with a thickness of 0.075 to 0.1 mm, produces keys whose resistance is not constant. This resistance increases in such a way that after a few years the semi-conductive layer no longer fulfills the required conditions.
The application of semi-conductive coats, under. form - of a paint on isolated couplers, in order to avoid the formation of effluents, is not advantageous in certain cases being - given the fact that the layers of paints are liable to disintegrate - by as a result of normal expansion or contraction of organs, or for other reasons.
It is then possible to use to a ru ban coated with a semiconductor material which is wound on the surfaces of the insulated conducflowers instead of covering these surfaces with paint.
It has been found that anthracite of substantially colloidal dimensions and less 10% volatile matter is capable of providing a semi-conductive paint avoiding the aforementioned drawbacks.
The present invention therefore has for object a composition for obtaining a semiconductor mass intended for the protection of electrical insulation and containing a u..queuse colloidal suspension of anthracite having less than 10% of volatile matter and an organic substance soluble in water and capable there to form a film during the application of said complositiou on a support.
The accompanying drawing shows various a # p- # plitati-ons of the composition according to the invention. La, fi.g. 1 is a partial view, paxtie, of an oletro-dynamic apparatus. Fig. 2 shows a fragment of a cross-section, to larger scale, -of ru- Zn ban prepared with the help of the composition according to the invention.
Fig. 3 is an elevation fragment representing a method of applying semiconductor layers to a conductor.
The resistance of Fanthratite depends on its origin so that by incorporating it in various proportions into an organic material capable of forming a film, it is possible to obtain surface resistances of about 1 at 1000 megohms per em2 for a film with a thickness of 0.075 to 0.1 mm. The resistance can be checked and adjusted by mixing anthracite from several sources.
In addition, the strength of anthracite - depends largely on the percentage of volatiles y included. Humidity and hydrocarbons are taken into account as volatile materials, as well as other materials which are released during heating, from #charcoal to a high temperature. The following table refers to six anthracite samples from the State, Penisylvania.

It is, of course, rare that a #seuJe vaxiety of an Thracite is appropriate for the intended purpose.
The charcoal can first be ground to a fineness such that it passes through a sieve of 10.0 meshes per cm #. We can then proceed as follows: The coal is subjected to a grinding in a with ball or tube mill, for example, depp6férenoe # , in the absence of water for a period of approximately 24 hours until collideal fineness. It is advantageous to use a suspension of 30% of charcoal in water.
During grinding, small portions taken out of the grinder are examined to be convinced that the charcoal has the desired fineness. A practical method of determining the degree of pulverization of the charcoal is to introduce a dispersion of 0.0-1 % -of charcoal in water i in a -cell. a photoelectric colorimeter. When, the light transmission of the coal scatter is about to the grinding can be considered sufficient.
Light transmission values of # / 1 % to 10% indicate heavy grinding. A 5% light transmission appears to # correspond to, average particles less than one micron: The product in the 'ball mill' is then i passed through through a fine mesh fabric to remove any unwanted material.
The substantially colloidal charcoal, suspended in water, is then mixed with a water-soluble resin, gum or 1 a-Liters substances soluble in water and suitable to < / B> form a movie. Gum arabic has been found to be particularly suitable.
However, you can also use 1,% tragacanth gum, as well as gum, gatti. Li # oilyvin3, ic alcohol, which is derived, by hydrolysis of a poqyviny-liqu # ,, ester, in a water-soluble form, e'e, st-à-, ie resulting from 'hydrolysis to at least 70%. Other examples of water soluble -soluble organic materials are methyl cellulose and glue to casein.
A by way of example, -the pre-brewing of a composition containing gum, ara) bique is -described in the following. The quantity of gum arabic can vary from 10 to 75 7o relative to the weight; total -charcoal and gum. Add the gum to the carbon slurry and enough water to dissolve the resin. The total amount of water is generally in the ratio of at least 3 parts of water per part of coal and resin.
To stabilize the suspension and prevent separation of the gum, approximately 1% - ammonia is added than based on the weight of gum arabic. Obviously, other stabilizers can also be used.
By a complete mixture of colloidal anthracite, gum arabic, water and ammonia, a stable suspension results which is suitable for application to organs such as semi-co-ordination. -conductive.
A viscosity of 10 # to 100 seconds No 1 Demmler, is # satisfactory. Fig. 1 of the drawing represents the heads of the winding of a mechanical-dynamic apparatus, 10 on which the semiconductor com position is applied.
The apparatus 10 -6on-, sis, te-en unî, - plurality of sheets 12 of magnetic material held in position by the end plates 14. Slots or grooves 16 provided in the magnetic material 12 retain windings: 18 composed of electrically insulated conductors.
The 18 reducers end in the heads of the 20 # winding, where they are interposed and turned upside down, to be fixed in other suitable slots. In -reason 61, powerful electromagnetic forces which originate # ë1anÊ #, the, -conductors, and which would cause.
displacements of these and -of vibrations .-, destructive, it is necessary to tie or intertwine the -conductors with each other and to fix them to the ends of the winding heads. A This effect, one can provide -pieces, spacing 22 in an insulating material, such as wood, or a semiconductor composition inserted between the successive ends of the windings, in such a way that they are clearly spaced.
Knots and ties 24 are applied around successive conductors to rigidly secure the heads of the windings 20 to the space blocks 22 and thus prevent any vibration. A the place where the windings 18 exit from the groove 16, - we will usually have the grooved wedge-shaped spacers 26 . These pieces & 'spacing may look like those used for blocks 2.2.
28 knots or ligatures are mounted around the 26 blocks -in their channels to rigidly fix the wedge-shaped blocks. In some rias, transverse 30 ligatures between the successive windings are irio, used in the vicinity of the 26. blocks.
The composition according to the invention is preferably applied to the insulated surfaces of the conductors 18 to, 20 before the a-ssembla, e of the apparatus 10. De in this way it is possible to ensure a complete and uniform coating of each one, - delles. Since the winding heads 20 generally have a narrow construction,
it is very difficult to apply the semiconductor compwition after assembly-.Pl of the device. When the wraps 18 to 20 have been placed in the appliance and the spacers 22 and 26 have been applied and the ligatures 24, 2! 8 and 310 intertwined and fixed, the whole assembly is brought to the earth by the groove parts of the windings 18 which are coated with a layer of low resistance graphite,
this being in contact with the wall-grooves 16. The whole can then be painted with an insulating varnish resistant to atmospheric influences, this layer being an additional protection against humidity. Such a layer of varnish does not prevent the. # semi-, conductive layer 32 of # fulfilling its function.
The 32 layer can be formed by simply applying the protective composition in the form of a paint to each of the insulated conductors; it is obvious that one or more of these layers can be completed. It is also possible to proceed by coating the insulated conductors with a semiconductor tape prepared beforehand with the semiconductor composition.
The fi ,. 2 shows a cross section of a ru-ban s, emi-.eonducteti # r 40 comprising a fibrous material 4-2 of glass fibers, cotton fibers or asbestos or any other desired material, said tape being impregnated with the -composition according to the invention.
This ribbon can advantageously be prepared by simply dipping the fibrous material into the slurry and then passing it between rollers to remove excess slurry. Moisture can be removed by drying in an oven or by exposing the thus treated tape to of, - infra-, red lamps or by some other method. For some purposes, however, the tape will only be partially dried.
A certain lightness can be maintained in the tape by keeping it in cans with water in the bottom or by other suitable means. Thanks to this humidity, the tape bends better than a completely dried tape, moreover, a wet tape has still other advantages which will be described below.
The tape can be applied to insulated conductors so that the successive spirals partially overlap. It has been found that a ribbon containing an appreciable amount of moisture, which makes the organic matter go into the composition, by (# xempl.e. of gum arabic, slightly sticky and plastic, empélie the formation of voids between the various turns of the tape.
When a tape thus applied is dried, the conductor can exhibit high voltages without generating corona between the convolutions of the tape. The total surface of the pipe is not substantially free of flutes. This advantage does not. is not found in semiconductor ribbons known heretofore and constitutes a significant advantage of the tape produced with the claimed semiconductor composition.
Also used as a semi-conductive layer 312, the tape 40 can be used for knots or ligatures 24, 28 and 30. </ B >
The semiconductor composition can be applied to the conductors 18 to 20 in another way, which has certain advantages over the methods described above. As shown in fig. 3, the insulated conductor 50 is first of all covered # rt with a layer 5C- of, the -composition.
This 52 wet layer is enveloped by a porous fibrous tape 54, untreated of fiberglass, cotton or asbestos, etc. The tape 54 is applied with sufficient pressure to cause the to 2 semiconductor layer to penetrate the tape and to ooze through the gaps of said tape. Then an outer layer 56 of the colloidal suspension is applied to the tape 54. The semiconductor layer thus obtained is extremely stable. The tape 54 prevents crumbling.
If the blocks 22 and 26 are made of wood or some other insulating electric material, they can be made semiconductor at their surfaces in order to reduce the potential between the -successive ends of the windings, by the application of a layer of said colloidal suspension. During drying, the blocks can be inserted between the coils in a #dinary fashion.
The entire assembly 10 can also be dipped in a paint or enamel resistant to atmospheric agents or covered with, using a brush or by spraying with the udder one coat of said paint. Such a paint is advantageous in that it prevents atmospheric moisture from acting on the water-soluble organic substance.
A By way of example, to show the remarkable uniformity and stability of the semiconductor products in question, the insulation of a coil has been covered with a layer of a thickness of 0.075 to. 0J mm -of a composition -conforming to the invention -and we applied qué to this layer, after drying,
an insulating enamel resistant to atmospheric influences. The coil was then heated in an oven at 200 ' C. The resistance of the semiconductor paint layer was then 4th 0.18 megohms after treatment ( 16 h.
At the end of 30 days, the resistance was 0.18 megohms. The to 200, ' C test for a period of one month is equivalent to approximately five years of employment under normal conditions . It therefore emerges that the semiconductor layers obtained with the composition according to the invention are extremely stable, even if they are subjected to high temperatures.
When tape is applied to electrical devices, adhesive can be applied to the surface of the insulation to eliminate any possibility of a vacuum retaining gas under the turns of the tape. A < / B> -This effect, in, can apply a solution -de polyisobutylene or asphalt or a. other adhesive substance on the surface of the insulations, so that when the tape is applied, the polyisobutylene, for example, will fill the empty space under the tape.
Another advantage of this way of operating lies in better adhesion of the ru-ban to the driver.
A semiconductor tape prepared with a composition according to the invention was applied in the wet state, on reels, without having previously painted these coils. The dry resistance of the tape was 20 megohms and the glass cloth tape, with a thickness of 0.25 mm, was after l application of the composition, a total thickness of 0.3 mrm. The coils to which the ru-ban was applied were tested at 13,800 volts.
Then, after placement of the tape, a test voltage of 29,000 volts was applied for one minute without being able to observe the formation of tributaries. Subsequently, 4000) 0. volts were applied for a considerable period of time without observation of any corona at any end of the coils. This high voltage would therefore not cause any harmful effect on the insulation of the coils.
By employing, for example, colloidal anthracite suspensions containing gum arabic, a maximum variation in strength of 20% between parts of a winding head can be obtained.
