Process for the production of fillers for rubber compounds. It is known that the fillers for rubber and similar substances only improve the quality of vulcanizates if they have a certain maximum size and shape of the particles. The fillers must also have a certain affinity for rubber. So far, only the soot generated under certain conditions, which is referred to as carbon black, has met all these conditions.
Other mineral fillers used in rubber manufacture are inferior to carbon black, as can be seen from the example of Magnesia Carbonica. Efforts have been made, particularly recently, to improve the properties of the mineral fillers through various measures. So were z. B. the fillers with capillary-active compounds, such as organic acids or their salts, impregnated, or colloidal fractions of natural silicates were used.
Finally, the slowing effect of amorphous silicates, precipitated silicic acid or metal oxides on vulcanization has been compensated for by adding mineral accelerators, in particular hydroxides, oxides or carbonates of the alkali or alkaline earth metals. All of these agents have not proven their worth and the products do not achieve the properties of active carbon soot.
The inventors have succeeded in producing active fillers from natural and man-made silicates whose physical properties improve rubber vulcanizates to such an extent that they are even superior to carbon black in some cases.
The invention relates to a process for the production of fillers for rubber mixtures from burnt and ground silicates and is characterized in that silicates which have a fine crystal structure with a single crystal size of 0.005-0, upon heat treatment between 500-1000 C 1 assume, subjecting it to such a heat treatment to form the structure mentioned and then grinding it. One can start from finely divided silicates that have been spotted or. were slurried. However, this measure is not absolutely necessary.
The heating takes, for example, -30 minutes to 3 hours. The temperature as well as the heating time depends on the type of silicate used. This heat treatment achieves the same result with crystalline and amorphous silicates, although a different reaction mechanism is present in both cases.
In the case of crystalline silicates, the formation of the fine crystal structure mentioned during the heat treatment can, for example, firstly be brought about by the release of crystal water and then by conversion from one modification to the other; In the case of amorphous, colloidal silicates, the process can take place in such a way that initially colloid or Chemically bound water is released, followed by the formation of crystallization centers and the growth of crystals. The heating must be interrupted when the stated crystal size is reached.
After cooling, the material can be easily ground to the required fineness due to its fine crystal structure. This fine and uniform structure gives the ground filler that affinity to natural skin protection or to other rubber-like substances which enables results to be achieved at least as good as those of carbon fiber.
