Method of operating a timer. The invention relates to a method for operating a timepiece driven by a synchronous motor and is characterized in that the energy required to operate the synchronous motor is supplied by a direct current battery.
Synchronous chronoscopes and other short timers with synchronous motor drives have been widely used for a long time, especially for tariff counting in telex, telegraphy or telephony operations as well as in test technology, where they are used as test devices, e.g. B. be used for relays, time detonators and many other purposes. So far, they have not been usable in all cases where there is no alternating current network to feed the synchronous motor.
Nevertheless, their high accuracy would make it appear desirable if they could also be used independently of the mains voltage, especially for outdoor sporting events.
Electrical engineering knows a number of means to generate alternating current from a direct current battery. However, the difficulty in the present case is that extremely high demands must be made on the frequency constancy of the alternating current required. The difficulties are increased by the fact that the voltage supplied by a direct current battery is not constant and, in particular, decreases sharply as the discharge progresses.
The invention nevertheless provides that the energy required to operate the synchronous motor is supplied by a direct current battery. The above-mentioned difficulties are overcome in the exemplary embodiment described below for carrying out the method according to the invention in that a vibrator is operated with the battery and supplies the alternating current required to operate the synchronous motor.
Under the name "vibrator" are also called "pole changer" respectively. "Buzzer" designated DC / AC converter understood. The battery operation of the alternator immediately results in the advantage that the battery previously required to drive the electrical pointer clutch can be omitted because the battery operating the vibrator can also drive the pointer clutch of the timepiece.
So that the alternating current energy supplied by the vibrator has the required constant frequency, it is expedient to provide the vibrator with a device for frequency stabilization.
The figure shows an exemplary embodiment for carrying out the method according to the invention, in which the vibrator is frequency-stabilized with an iron-hydrogen resistor. The most important component of the vibrator is a spring F, which is firmly clamped at point 0. The spring carries a contact K and a double contact L. At rest, the spring assumes a central position in which the contact K is closed. This case is not shown in the drawing.
During operation, the spring swings back and forth between two end positions, one of which is drawn out and the other is shown in dashed lines. In one end position, the spring still closes the contact K and another contact P ,. In the other end position, the spring closes a contact P =, while contact K is open. The contacts P and P2, which resonate over a certain range, are connected to one another via the ends of the primary winding S, a transformer T.
The battery P has one pole on the grounded spring F and the other pole on the center tap of the transformer coil S ,. When the contact K is closed, a current also flows from the battery B via the spring F, the ferrous hydrogen resistor FeH and the voice coil M back to the battery B. The magnet of the voice sink 31 responds, pulling the spring F closed over, opens the contact K and thus interrupts its own electrical circuit.
At the same time the contact P.- is closed and a direct current pulse is sent through the right half of the coil S ,, ge. As a result of the opening of the oscillating coil circuit, the spring swings back, closes the contacts P, and K, whereby a direct current pulse is sent through the left half of the coil S and the oscillating coil circuit is closed again, whereupon the game repeats.
The oppositely directed direct current pulses in the two halves of the primary coil S induce the alternating current for the operation of the synchronous motor in the secondary coil S. The size of the capacitors C is adapted to the other impedances of the circuit in such a way that the current of the desired frequency (e.g. 50 or 100 Hz) is as free from harmonics as possible.
Measurements have shown that the frequency of the alternating current obtained remains practically constant in the event of fluctuations in the direct voltage used within a range of 4.3 to 6.5 volts.
The vibrator is expediently designed as a portable unit with the synchronous motor and the timing device. In order to rule out errors due to low winter temperatures, the apparatus can be equipped with a thermostat.
The embodiment described is particularly suitable for short-term knives of the synchronous chronoscope type.
