[Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Porous diaphragms for use in electrolytic cells are formed of synthetic resins and are treated with a wetting agent. Particles of synthetic resin, placed in a mould, are caused to cohere by softening them by heat or a solvent or by a binder such as a solution of the resin. The product is steeped in or coated or sprayed with a solution of a wetting agent such as sulphonates of high molecular-weight aliphatic alcohols. The synthetic resins may be polyacrylic acid or polyvinyl compounds such as polymethacrylic acid methyl ester, polyvinyl carbazole, polystyrene or polyvinyl halide.
