Process for the preparation of 2-methyl-2-methogy-3-chloro-tetrahydrofuran. Ether of 2-oxy-tetrahydrofuran derivatives of the general formula

where R denotes alkyl have not yet become known.
That such connections are viable or viable at all. would be constant was not foreseeable, because the associated 2-oxy-tetrahydrofurans are nothing else than y-oxyketones (Journal of the American Chemical Society 58 [1936], page 1804), their ethers accordingly to-acetals, which are known to be very easily decomposable are.
It has now been found that ethers of 2 - methyl - 2 - oxy - 3 - chloro-tetrahydrofuran can be obtained by treating aceto-chloro-butyrolactone in the presence of an aliphatic primary alcohol at moderate temperature with sulfuric acid .
The action of mineral acid on acetochlorobutyrolactone under other conditions is known (Journal of the American Chemical Society 58 [19361, page 1804; Chemisches Zentralblatt [1934] II, page 2381). The result obtained according to the present method is quite different and surprising.
It is also characteristic of the new process that it does not matter which mineral acid is used. A satisfactory result can only be achieved with sulfuric acid; also the temperature at which the action of the acid and alcohol is allowed to proceed is of essential importance. At a low temperature, the reaction is very slow; At high temperatures, higher-boiling by-products occur to an increasing extent. Work best at 40-50.
The present patent relates to a process for the preparation of 2-methyl-2-methoxy-3-chloro-tetrahydiofuran, which is characterized in that sulfuric acid is added to α-aceto-α-chlorobutyrolactone in the presence of methanol Temperatures of <B> 30-60 '</B>.
The 2-methyl-2-methoxy-3-chloro-tetrahydrofuran forms a colorless, easily mobile liquid that distills at <B> 53-54 '</B> at a pressure of 13 mm. It is difficult in water and easily soluble in organic solvents. Ketone reagents, e.g. B. semicarbazide, do not act. The chlorine atom shows good reactivity.
The new compound forms an intermediate product for the manufacture of a pharmaceutical preparation.
<I> Example: </I> 100 parts by weight of a-aceto-a-chloi-butyrolactone, 90 parts by weight of methanol and 55 parts by weight of 480% sulfuric acid are heated to 40-500 until the evolution of carbon dioxide has ended. After cooling, it is taken up in ether, washed free of acid first with water, then with sodium carbonate solution and the ethereal solution is then fractionally distilled. The yield of 2-methyl-2-methoxy-3-chloro-tetrahydrofuran is 52%.
