1, on admet qu'un avion vole de<I>A</I> vers<I>B,</I> l'observateur à l'appareil d'é coute étant en 0.
EMI0002.0035
EMI0002.0043
A'B' ou bien<I>A'0</I> peuvent varier à cet effet, mais il est préférable de faire varier A'B' suivant la vitesse de l'avion,
<I>A'0</I> représen tant alors la vitesse du son (constante).
vitesse estimée de l'engin aérien, vitesse indiquée par la graduation 68;
On a maintenant un dessin sur lequel<I>LA</I> est pa rallèle à SB, tandis que<I>AB</I> est parallèle à LS, <I>AB'</I> étant parallèle à<I>AB.</I> On voit, les triangles étant semblables, que
EMI0005.0065
EMI0006.0011
que <SEP> <I>A'B'</I> <SEP> est <SEP> proportionnel <SEP> à <SEP> L<U>S</U>
ils estiment l'éloigne ment<I>LB</I> et la vitesse. Les valeurs convena bles sont alors enregistrées sur l'échelle 78 pour la correction de parallaxe et sur l'échelle des vitesses 68;
Device for locating air navigation devices, comprising listening means mounted so as to be able to rotate in azimuth and in elevation. The present invention relates to a device for locating air navigation devices, comprising listening means mounted so as to be able to rotate in azi mut and in elevation.
It is known that the direction of an airplane, as given by a listening device, is quite different from the true line of sight (true direction) due to the high speed of modern airplanes and the the relatively low speed of sound compared to that of light. The angle between the true direction and the apparent direction indicated by the listening device is known as the sound delay error, and several devices have been devised to assess this angle, several of these devices comprising organs rotating at a certain angular speed for estimating the angular speed of the listening device, in order to determine the position of the true direction.
The tracking device according to the present invention is characterized in: that it comprises a viewfinder mounted on the aforementioned listening device so as to execute rotational movements in the same planes as the latter, a false goal located at a distance, means for keeping the false goal in the true line of sight of the airplane and comprising means for moving the false goal in question from the given line by listening an amount proportional to the estimated speed of the aircraft,
and means for determining the direction of movement of the airplane with respect to the movement in azimuth and in elevation of the aforementioned listening device.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.

In fig. 1, we admit that a plane flies from <I> A </I> towards <I> B, </I> the observer at the listening device being at 0. If A represents the position of l 'airplane when the sound heard at 0 leaves the airplane, and if B represents the position of said airplane when the sound reaches 0, we obtain: AO <I> - VT </I> equality in which V represents the speed of sound and T the time it takes for sound to go from A to 0. We also have <I> AB - UT </I> equality in which U represents the speed of the airplane.
Therefore
EMI0002.0035
equality in which V (speed of sound) is known, while U (speed of the plane) must be estimated. We therefore provide on the listening device a sighting system in which we obtain a triangle OA'B 'constructed with the ratio
EMI0002.0043
A'B 'or <I> A'0 </I> can vary for this purpose, but it is preferable to vary A'B' according to the speed of the plane,
<I> A'0 </I> then represents the speed of sound (constant). The subtended angle represents the sound delay error angle. Since the above is true in three-dimensional space, it is diffi cult to predict in a machine due in part to the fact that the angle formed by the line of sight is recorded as resulting from the components in azimuth and in elevation.
It is therefore preferable to move point B 'for the purpose of correcting the sound delay only in the horizontal plane and to stabilize its movement in a horizontal plane.
The problem then consists in directing the sight in the true position of the airplane in space without the airplane being visible, and this only according to the position of the listening device. An attempt has been made to illustrate the solution of the problem in three-dimensional space in fig. 2 completed with the aid of the plan of FIG. 3.
The listening device and the viewfinder are represented as situated at 0, the plane T flying along a line TAB (which is assumed to be horizontal) in the direction of the arrow. At a given moment, the listening device locates the airplane as apparently being in A.
If we assume that the speed of the airplane is known, the latter will be in a unit of time in any position on the circumference D described around point A taken as the center and whose radius is proportional to the speed .from the plane. However, the listening device, continuing its observation, determined that the airplane had moved in the TAB direction, so that the airplane must be located at point B, at the end of the interval. of time considered.
The azimuth angle as given by the listening device is then equal to b, the elevation angle being c. However, during the time it took for the sound to reach the listening device, the airplane had moved to the unknown point B and the problem was to place the false goal in the line of sight between <I> O and B, </I> or in <I> B '. </I> An examination of fig. 2 shows that the azimuth angle mut at point B is the angle b 'and that the elevation angle is c', the angular corrections in azimuth and -in elevation being consequently the angles O and 0, respectively,
the line OC being led from the point of origin O to the intersection of the diameter F of the circumference D described with A as the center and having a radius <I> AB </I> obtained by measuring the perpendicular from B up to diameter Y (hence, # -_ c "= # _- c '). Note that although D is a true circumference, it appears in Fig. 2 as a ellipse, as it is viewed from a point forward and from the side of the Y axis.
Likewise, in this case, the geometrical locus of the false goal at B 'is a true circumference, but means are provided - so that it is seen in a similar way from one side, so that it appears in the form of an ellipse which, geometrically, is similar to that formed by the circumference D.
To obtain this result, the displacement of the false goal is kept perfectly horizontal to correspond to the presumed plane of movement of the airplane and means are provided to locate the point B 'of the small circumference D' on the line '0B. Assuming that @ perpendicular A'B has a fixed length, the length of radius A'B 'can be registered in the machine. It only rewards the line of sight.
OB'B can be located, which immediately gives the true azimuth b 'and elevation c' angles, or in other words the correction O and 0 for each of them.
We will now describe, with reference to FIGS. 4 to 15, an embodiment of the invention, an embodiment based on the theoretical explanation which has just been given above.
In fig. 4, there is shown at 1, 2 and 3 the horns of a conventional listening device, horns mounted so as to be able to turn together, on the one hand, in azimuth on a frame supported by a rotating base ring and graduated 4 @and, on the other hand, also, in elevation on a common hollow shaft 5 serving as a support and rotating in bearings 6 and 6 'of the frame (fig. 6). A graduation 115 indicates the angle of elevation read opposite an index or mark 116, while a graduation 117 indicates the angle of rotation or azimuth angle.
To rotate the listening device in azimuth, a steering wheel 7 is provided, the operator of which wears a helmet fitted with earphones 8 and 9 connected to the horns 1 and 2, by means of tubes 110 and 111.
In a similar way, the pavilions are turned in elevation using a steering wheel 10, the operator of which wears a helmet fitted with headphones 11 and 12 connected, by means of appropriate tubes 112 and 113 for sound propagation, to pavilions 2 and 3, the sound from pavilion 2 being divided.
As seen in fig. 4, the rotation of the flywheel 7 causes the ring or platform 4 to rotate by means of conical pinions 13 and a pinion 14 which engages with the internal teeth 15 of the aforementioned ring. The platform which rotates in azimuth brings with it and through the intermediary of an arm 16 the sighting device pro prely .dit 17. In this example, the sight is shown in the form of a frozen eyepiece 18 and a reflecting mirror or a prism 19 mounted so as to be able to move in elevation on horizontal journals 20 and 20 '.
The mirror in question is preferably provided at its center with a reticle 21 which the operator makes coincide with the ball 22 of the false goal by moving the universal control handle 85.
The movement of the flywheel 7 also causes, by means of bevel gears 23, the rotation of a shaft 24 which rotates a shaft of a differential 25 for a purpose which will be explained below. The steering wheel 7 also causes the operation of the device for determining the late sound angle, a device provided in a box 56.
As can be seen in the drawing, this result is obtained by means of a chain wheel 26 and a chain 27, which passes over idler rollers 27 'to control a chain wheel 28 mounted on a common sleeve. with a second chain wheel 29 connected, via a chain 30, to a chain wheel 31 mounted on a shaft 32.
This control causes the rotation of a sphere 33 -in a certain plane by means of bevel gears 34, a shaft 35 and a friction drive disc 36.
Similarly, the flywheel 10 rotates the horns in elevation via bevel gears 37, a shaft 38 and a pinion 39 which engages a sector gear 40 of large dimension, sector which turns the pavilions in elevation. Simultaneously, the shaft 10 'of the flywheel 10 drives a chain 41 via a chain wheel 42,
which chain rotates a chain wheel 43 provided on a shaft 44 which, together with the sleeve 28 ', is mounted coaxially with respect to the axis of rotation of the casing 50.
The shaft 44 is shown as carrying a second chain wheel 45 through which it drives, by means of a chain 46, a chain wheel 47 provided on a common sleeve 48 carrying a disc of money. tion 49 forming a right angle with the disc 36 and also driving the sphere 33.
The chains 30 and 46 are enclosed in an arm or casing 50 which can turn on the side of a main box 52 at a point 53 situated at a certain distance from the axis of rotation of the hollow shaft 5 on which is cla - vetk an arm 55 in the form of a fork at its outer end,
fork in which can rotate, on horizontal journals 57 and 57 ', the box 56 which contains the sphere 33 and its drive mechanism. Thanks to this parallel connection, the. box 56 is hand held horizontal,
given that it sheet metal in the form of an assembly in elevation around the axis of the hollow shaft 5, the arm 50 being pivotally mounted on said box 53 '.
On the upper part of the box 56 is a pantograph system 58 which carries the false goal or ball 22. The internal moving point 59 of the pantograph in question is mil from its neutral center line directly above the center of the box. the sphere 33 by a quantity which is proportional to the speed
estimate of the goal in the air, since the direction or direction of movement is determined by the position of the roller 60 which is driven by the sphere 33 and which is carried by a vertical shaft 61 perpendicular to the shaft 35 and to the sleeve 48.
The shaft 61 carries at its upper part a U-shaped support frame 62 which can be given the shape of a miniature airplane 63 and in which a threaded shaft 64 can turn.
The shaft in question is engaged with a nut 66 carrying a rod 59 pivoting in the internal end of the pantograph. A knurled knob 67 turns the shaft 64 to position the nut 59 according to the
estimated speed of the aerial vehicle, speed indicated by the graduation 68;
the movements of the listening device rotate the aforementioned support and, with it, the miniature airplane, so that the latter always indicates the direction in which the goal is flying, in other words the trajectory or the plane of displacement of the rod 59 is thus determined.
It can be seen mathematically that the gear ratios between the azimuth control and the roller 49, on the one hand, and between the elevation control and the roller 36, on the other hand, may not be the same and, in fact,
to obtain theoretically perfect results, at least one of the drive systems must be able to vary depending on case 0 and sir f, the angle of elevation.
However, for practical reasons and as a result of varying factors. Such as the refraction of sound at small elevation angles and the difficulty of operation at large elevation angles, the useful operating area of the hearing device is between 15 and 75 elevation. .
For simplicity of the drawing, we have chosen, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, an average value for cos 0 and sir 0 of 0.4 and the gear ratios are such as la. speed of roller 36 is equal to -, ie U, 4 2.5 times higher than the speed of roller 49 for the same angular speeds of the listening device in azimuth and in elevation.
To introduce the parallax correction, a second point 69 has been provided in the double pantograph system which can be blocked in a suitable manner. At this point is a connecting rod 70 protruding out of a small plate 71 pivoting in an adjustable manner on the upper part of a circular plate or disc 72 rotatable in a holder 74, which protrudes out. of the box 56, through a shaft end 73.
The plate 71 can be pivoted eccentrically 75 relative to the disc 72 and it has a slot 76 near its front end, so that it can be locked in any position by means of a set screw. blocking 77. An arbitrary graduation 78 can be provided on the disc 72, front graduation which can move an index or mark 79 that the plate 71 carries.
When the mark is at zero, the rod 70 is located directly above the axis of rotation of the shaft end 73, as seen in the figures, so that, in this position, no correction of parallax is recorded. If, however, the plate is moved in the direction shown in dotted lines - in fig. <B> 10,
</B> a parallax correction is recorded for the positioning of the projector. The direction of the lateral displacement of the projector is recorded by the rotation of the disc 72 on which there is a direction arrow 80 so that it points directly towards the projectors.
This can be achieved by temporarily depressing a pin 81 normally engaged with a pin 82 frozen to the disc 72 and rotating the boom with your fingers to the proper position, after which the pinions are returned into engagement. The gables. aim to maintain the arrow indication on the headlamps without taking into account subsequent azimuthal movements of the listening device.
For this purpose, the pinion 81 is driven by the shaft 36 'of the azimuth friction disc 36, for example by means of a helical toothed wheel 83, so that the arrow rotates in the opposite direction. movements in azimuth @of the listening device and at an equal speed.
The effect of this parallax adjustment on the system can be deduced from fig. 11. In Bette figure, it has been admitted, for the sake of simplicity, that point 59 is set for a goal speed equal to zero and that goal B is very close to the horizon, the apparatus .d ' listening being in L, the searchlight in S and the false goal in B '.
Without parallax correction, the projector will obviously be pointed along the dotted line <B> SC </B> parallel to the line <I> LB </I> connecting the listening device to the goal. It is obvious that the light beam does not reach the goal, which makes it necessary to rotate the beam backwards in azimuth by an angle O 'to bring it to SB.
We now have a drawing in which <I> LA </I> is parallel to SB, while <I> AB </I> is parallel to LS, <I> AB '</I> being parallel to <I > AB. </I> We see, the triangles being similar, that
EMI0005.0065
equality in which A'B 'represents the distance by which it is necessary to move the false goal to the left, <I> LB' </I> being a constant in the machine.
It is therefore obvious that <I> AB = </I> LS is, in other words, equal to the base or horizontal distance between the listening device and the projector, a distance which is known. <I> LB </I> is the removal of the goal when it is admitted that it is aimed.
For this reason, it is obvious
EMI0006.0011
that <SEP> <I> A'B '</I> <SEP> is <SEP> proportional <SEP> to <SEP> L <U> S </U>
<tb> distance The distance LS and the distance from the goal being known, the ratio of these quantities can be taken from a table and recorded on the arbitrary scale 78. With this setting, the ball 22 is moved by B ' towards A 'where the goal, the listening device and the projector are in alignment.
Since the listening device can rotate in azimuth and in elevation, the false goal moves on a circumference C 'of radius A'B'. Given, however, that the false goal is observed only through the sight 18 and that the offset remains as long as the arrow 80 is directed towards the projector,
parallax correction is applied correctly for all goal positions. given that the points of the circumference C 'are projected along a line which connects the eye and the ball (fig. 1 and 2).
The result is that the parallax correction is properly performed at its proper component angles in azimuth and elevation for all positions of the listening device.
It is obvious that the aforementioned movement due to the parallax correction is superimposed on the correction of sound delay due to the displacement of point 59.
The introduction of either one or both of the aforementioned corrections results in a displacement of the false goal 22, so that the line of sight must be readjusted from the sight to the goal from the position indicated by l listening device. In this embodiment of the invention, this readjustment or adjustment is carried out using a button 85.
This positive device can rotate in azimuth in its appearance so as to rotate a sleeve 86 mounted so as to be able to rotate in the bottom of the housing 87 on which the viewfinder itself is mounted. The aforementioned sleeve is represented with an arm 96 by both said sleeve and in which the shaft 95 of the button 85 can be rotated. On the sleeve in question is also mounted a pinion 88 which drives a pinion 89 of the shaft 90.
On this shaft is mounted a pinion 91 which engages with a pinion 92 fixed at the base of the sight proper. This shaft also rotates the opposite arm of the differential 25 which is controlled from the flywheel 7 via the shaft 24.
The planetary arm of the aforementioned differential actuates a shaft 93 so that the transmitter 94 which transmits the azimut indications to the projector simultaneously transmits the azimuth movements of the listening device and the corrections of azimuth as they are
provided by the viewfinder.
Elevation corrections are recorded by rotating knob 85 which rotates shaft 95 which pivots in arm 96.
The rotation of the shaft 95 lowers and raises a short vertical shaft 98, via a pinion 99 whose teeth mesh with circular teeth 100 cut in the shaft in question. The vertical movement of the aforementioned tree is transmitted,
by the intermediary of similar teeth, to a pinion <B> 101 </B> and, of the latter, to an arm of the differential 25 ', which arm is opposed to the arm actuated by means of a , shaft 102 from elevation handwheel 10.
The third arm of this differential controls a shaft 103 which not only actuates the elevation sender 104 to control the headlamp, but also moves up and down a vertical shaft 105, via 'a pinion 106 for moving the mirror 19 in elevation, around its towers 20.
The difference in the drives from the two differentials is due to the fact that the viewfinder rotates in azimuth with the listening device, but not in elevation,
therefore, it is necessary to impart to the mirror the full lifting movement from the listening device and the correction device. The movements of the shaft <B> 105 </B> rotate the mirror around its journals 20, through a pinion 107, a pinion 108 and a toothed sector 119 attached to. the lower part of the mirror holder.
As explained above, for a precise positioning of the servo-controlled roller 60 according to the true displacement angle 0, that is to say the angle between the line which connects the listening device and the goal and the horizontal projection of the goal displacement (fig. 15), the relation is as follows:
EMI0007.0004
equality in which TIR represents the horizontal component of the velocity (TTT) of the goal in the listening plane, while TIL represents the horizontal component normal to the listening plane in question.
If the control rollers 49 and 36 are driven in the same constant ratio between the angular speed of the listening device co 0 for the azimuth and co 0 for the elevation, we have
EMI0007.0014
However, we see that mathematically this is not perfectly correct, that is to say that tg. -
EMI0007.0017
is not always equal to tg
EMI0007.0018
cos O sin 0, 0 being the angle of elevation.
Consequently, we introduce, in the control which connects the roller 36 for the azimuth command to the command: of the azimuth movement of the listening device, a variable speed command with a characteristic ratio. speed cos 0 sin 0 which can also register 1/2 sin 2 0.
For this purpose, the shaft 32 of FIG. 13, shaft which is driven as a result of azimuth movements of the listening device through the intermediary of a chain wheel 31, as seen previously, drives a friction disc 130 with which is constantly engaged a friction roller 131 adjustable in the radial direction.
This roller can slide on the shaft 132 so that the roller in question can be adjusted in the radial direction by means of a fork 134 which engages with the collar and which is mounted on a sliding rod 185 provided. of a cam. This rod is shown as having a quadrangular section mounted so as to be able to slide in a horizontal slot 186 provided in the casing or housing 56 '. The part 185 'projects outwards and engages in a curved slot 187 provided in an extension 188 of the forked arm 55'.
The curved slot 187 is shaped such that the rod 185 is maintained in its innermost position when the arm 55 'is at 45, a position in which the roller 131 is driven at its maximum speed (since the sine odes two times 45 equals 1). The slot is curved symmetrically with respect to point 57 above and below the horizontal plane passing through this latter point, so that the speed of the roller 131 and consequently that of the driven disc 130 is reduced. according to a factor of 1/2 sin 2 0.
On the shaft 132 is a pinion 139 which drives a pinion 140 fixed to the drive roller 36 ", said pinions and roller being able to rotate on the shaft 35 'which drives the pinion 83 for the parallax mechanism, the shaft 35 'being driven through bevel gears 34 directly by the shaft 32, so that the variable speed drive does not affect the parallax mechanism.
The operation of the device, object of the invention, emerges from the preceding indications. The observers start by aiming the arrow 80 at the searchlight, and their knowledge of the conditions of the area of illumination of the searchlights and of the type of attack bomber,
they estimate <I> LB </I> distance and speed. The correct values are then recorded on scale 78 for parallax correction and on speed scale 68;
, as soon as an attack aircraft is heard, the listening operators begin to maneuver the azimuth 7 and elevation 10 wheels to follow the goal with the listening device, which, like as already explained, determines the placement of the false goal 22 in alignment with the goal.
Through the eyepiece 18, the observer maintains the line of sight on the false goal, whereby the proper azimuth and elevation angles are transmitted from the transmitters 94 and 104 to the searchlights or, which is preferred. rable, at an intermediate station or comparison station where binoculars are placed and which retransmits the positions to the projectors.
As soon as the observer with binoculars sees the goal, he ensures control of the transmission of angles to the projectors.
If desired, the comparison station can be omitted and the angles can be transmitted directly to the projectors. In this case, the binoculars 140 are preferably mounted on the side of the eyepiece 18 (fig. 12) and the mirror 19 'is then extended lengthwise so that it can be used both with the eyepiece and with the eyepiece. binoculars to aim the goal,
said binoculars being mounted on the same base 92 as the eyepiece and moving with it. Preferably, the binoculars are placed sufficiently close to the eyepiece, so that the observer can look with one eye through said eyepiece and with the other eye through the eyepiece adjacent to the binocular, this so that as soon as the goal is in sight,
he can bring both eyes to the binoculars and directly control the control via button 85 from which the transmitters 94 and 104 are controlled. The operators listening can then continue to operate the steering wheels 7 and although this is not necessary, except to facilitate the location of the goal, if the goal is lost to view by the binoculars.
