EMI0005.0002
par <SEP> le <SEP> procédé <SEP> eue <SEP> l'invention <SEP> sont <SEP> celles <SEP> qu'on <SEP> soumet <SEP> nor- malement à une réticulation pour leur conférer les proprié tés décrites ci-dessus, par exemple la cellulose naturelle et régénérée;

Process for the crosslinking of cellulosic textile materials ha the present invention relates to a process for the rapid crosslinking of hydrated cellulosic textile materials in order to give them the ability to keep wet, a determined state, in which process is carried out using epichlorohydrin and a strong base as a catalyst.
Belgian Patent No. 556,279 of March 30, 1957 describes a wet crosslinking process for cellulose fabrics by epichlorohydrin, the fabric being impregnated with moisture and with a catalyst consisting of a strong base.
In this process, the reaction is slow and it usually takes several hours to achieve a complete reaction at room temperature. As might be expected, the reaction time may

It has also found that, under these conditions, the loss of resistance inherent in the crosslinking of cellulosic materials is less for a given <I> degree </I> of flat drying than the loss of resistance observed when it is dry. The crosslinking reaction is carried out by applying liquid epichlorohydrin to the cellulosic material in batch.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the material is passed continuously through a closed chamber, while it is impregnated with a quantity of humidity not exceeding 130% and a quantity of a strong base constituting the catalyst of at least 0.75%, expressed as NaOH, these two quantities being calculated with respect to the weight of the dry cellulosic material, in that the material maintained in the chosen conformation, with gaseous epichlorohydrin at a temperature close to the boiling point of epichlorohydrin, for at least 5 seconds in the chamber, until 0,
75-7% strong base, expressed as NaOH, based on the weight of dry cellulosic material was consumed.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, cellulosic textile material is continuously supplied in the form of a piece, preferably a woven textile, uniformly impregnated with an amount of moisture of up to 100 and the strong base. constituting the catalyst in amounts of 1 to 5%, in contact, in the form chosen, with epichlorohydrin vapors at a temperature close to the boiling point, until practically all the catalyst has been consumed. then heats the material to a temperature above the boiling point of epichlorohydrin,
until substantially all of the epichlorohydrin is removed from the material.
The expression "ability to maintain, in the wet, a determined condition or conformation" as used herein means that the cellulosic textile material treated in accordance with the invention tends to recover, after having been twisted or crumpled. the wet state, the form in which it was at the time when the crosslinking reaction was carried out. In the case of a yarn, this means that the yarn can be packed in the wet state and that, if it has been crosslinked in the uncreased state, it tends to straighten up on its own if it is so. allows. Fabrics knitted or woven with these treated yarns are also resistant to creasing during washing.
If the yarn has been crosslinked in a crumpled state, the yarn obtained and the fabrics which it is used to manufacture have a voluminous appearance and are refused. resume the flat state. When treating fabrics in a flat, wrinkle-free state, the crosslinked fabric then resists creasing in the wet state. These fabrics can then be washed and dried by centrifugal spin in an automatic machine or twisted by hand: they dry practically without wrinkles on a thread.

The cellulosic material may also have undergone a prior treatment with a resin, for example using a urea-formaldehyde resin,
melamine formaldehyde, cyclic ethylene urea, dihydric ethylene urea, triazone, or any other common treatment with resins, so that the material already has an appreciable ability to maintain, in dry conditions, a determined state and, to a lesser extent, a ability to keep wet,

The preferred cellulosic material is cotton wool, preferably woven, for example printed fabric, poplin or canvas. Although the process of the invention is usually applied to cellulosic materials consisting entirely of cotton or rayon, it is also applicable to yarns and fabrics which also contain fibers.

Preferably, the cellulosic material consists of at least 40% by weight of the material to be treated, and more preferably about 60% or more of said material.
Among the strong bases which can be used as a catalyst for the crosslinking reaction, there will be mentioned alkali metal hydroxides, for example sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, quaternary ammonium hydroxides, for example. example trimethylphenylammonium hydroxide, and alkali metal salts which, in the presence of humidity, form a strongly alkaline solution,
and, for example, alkali metal sulfides and silicates. When salts are used, they should be used in an amount such that they will contain in solution an alkalinity approximately equivalent to that obtained when an alkali metal hydroxide is used. As the cellulosic material tends to lose its mechanical strength in proportion to the amount of strong base present in the course of the reaction,
it is recommended to keep the amount of catalyst originally present in the material at a value less than 10:
&, expressed as NaOH based on the weight of the dry fabric, preferably between 1 and 7%, more especially between 1 and 5% eea, for example between about 2.0 and 4%. The optimum amount of catalyst which should be present in the fabric under determined operating conditions depends in part on how one

As indicated above, the crosslinking reaction is carried out on the cellulosic dobby impregnated, at the beginning at least, with moisture and with the strong base constituting the catalyst.
The most convenient way to apply moisture is to use the strong base as an aqueous solution. The proportion of moisture present during the reaction, although not critically important within limits wide enough to achieve good wet deformation resistance of the material, can affect the degree of resistance. to the dry deformation conferred on the cellulosic material. The material can also be preheated to limit cooling in the reaction chamber and therefore excessive condensation of liquid epichlorohydrin on the fabric.
As stated above, moisture and strong base can be applied by padding, using applicator rollers, using printing rollers, spraying, etc. provided that they are evenly distributed in the material in a manner which avoids undesirable deformation of the material, eg embossing or puckering; and c.

The <SEP> material <SEP> to <SEP> to process
<tb> pass <SEP> then <SEP> in <SEP> a closed symptom of contact with epichlorohydrin, that is to say in an enclosure designed to prevent the escape of epichlorohydrin vapors towards the outside but having an entry and an exit of the cellulosic material. Upon contact with epichlorohydrin, the cellulosic material should be in the desired form and impregnated with the strong base constituting the catalyst.
Usually this means, for example, that the fabric passes through the chamber in the deployed state and that the hand is held in a flat and wrinkle-free state during the reaction period. The residence time during which the material is in contact with the epichlorohydrin vapors, must be sufficient for it to be consumed from approximately 1 to 7% of strong base, calculated as NaOH relative to the weight of the dry cellulosic material; this duration is at least 5 seconds and preferably 30 to 300 seconds.
This operating time can be ensured by an Eenteler successive parking system or a zigzag system if the material is in the form of a piece, or by a series of rollers or aprons if the material is in the form of wire or in the form of non-stranded fiber.
The epichlorohydrin in vapor form can be brought into contact with the cellulose material by operating with a device of the heated tank type, for example with vapor coils,
that is, by maintaining a reservoir of liquid epichlorohydrin at the boiling point and passing the cellulosic material over the surface of the boiling epichlorohydrin. The treated material must not come into contact with the surface of. boiling epichlorohydrin on pain of disturbing the operation.
The gaseous epichlorohydrin reacts rapidly with the cellulosic material, simultaneously consuming the strong base which constitutes the catalyst and removing some or all of the water contained in the material.
Preferably, care will be taken to ensure that this water is eliminated from the system in order to prevent its recondensation inside the latter; for example, a condenser and trap system can be used which causes the water to separate from the epichlorohydrin as the two liquids condense.
Since epichloride consumes the strong base constituting the catalyst when it reacts with the cellulosic material, the reaction will stop on its own if the reaction time is sufficient. Therefore, it is not necessary to avoid contact of the material with an amount of gaseous epichlorohydrin considerably in excess of the amount theoretically required and, in fact,
it is not desirable to operate in this way. It is preferred that the material is contacted with an amount of epichlorhydrin gas at least equivalent, in moles, to the amount of strong base present on the material; however, smaller or larger amounts can be used, if desired, and, for example, 0.5 to 20% by weight, based on the dry cellulosic material.
When the cross-linking reaction has taken place to the desired extent, or when it is complete, the cellulosic material is saturated with excess epichlorohydrin, which impregnates it, particularly if it is not maintained. the fabric at or above the boiling point of epichlorohydrin. In order to improve the economics of the process and avoid handling the material impregnated with epichlorohydrin in the open atmosphere,
The material is preferably heated above the boiling point of epichloride, for example by means of steam-heated drying cylinders, or by heat irradiation devices. To prevent re-condensation of the epichlorohydrin in the material, this heating operation is preferably carried out above the height of condensation of the epichlorohydrin in the closed chamber,
for example by keeping the heater above the plane in which the epichlorohydrin vapors are condensed by the cooling system; this operation can also be carried out by heating in a separate part of the closed chamber, which part is maintained at a temperature above the boiling point of epichlorohydrin.
The textile material can then be washed according to usage to remove, if desired, any traces of reactants or reaction by-products.

Above the condensation level of epichlorohydrin are drying cylinders heated to a temperature above the boiling point of epichlorohydrin. Below the epichlorohydrin condensation level is a zigzag system which allows the fabric to be moved flat.
The NaOH impregnated fabric is continuously passed through the zigzag system at a rate such that the time of exposure to the epichlorohydrin vapors is 120 seconds. The fabric then passes over the dryer cylinders: all the epichlorohydrin is then removed from the fabric which leaves the closed chamber via a vapor seal and then passes into washing tanks.
The resulting fabric has a wet-fold recovery year of at least 140, a weft-direction tensile strength of at least 13.6 kg; in the standard flatbed drying test which consists of subjecting a square piece of fabric to the spin cycle of an automatic washing machine containing a normal load in order to spin the fabric,
