Stahllegierung.

Steel alloy. The invention relates to a chromium steel with 12 to 35% chromium, which has great toughness and excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures. If stink material is introduced into the ferritic high-chromium-containing steels, then one obtains a remarkable reduction in grain size and an increase in strength, without loss of elongation.
Nitrogen increases the toughness of these steels without seriously affecting their resistance to corrosion or oxidation at elevated temperatures. In order to obtain these results, it is necessary that the nitrogen is substantially uniformly distributed throughout the steel, which can easily be achieved by adding the nitrogen in the form of a chromium nitride or other suitable nitride to the molten steel.
The remarkable effect of nitrogen with regard to improving the properties of steels with a high chromium content is most pronounced in steels which contain between 15 and 35% chromium, the nitrogen content being at least 0.2%.
The present invention now aims to improve the toughness of the above-described, high-nitrogen chromium steels by introducing comparatively small amounts, at least 0.25%, but not more than 3%, of at least one of the fourth period of the periodic table belonging metal, its Atomic weight between 58 and 64 is. Copper or nickel or a mixture of both can be used for this purpose). The effect of the addition of these metals can be seen from the table below, the data of which was obtained with fully annealed steels.

Furthermore, the other valuable physical properties of the nitrogen-containing steels, such as e.g. B. Resistance to heat and corrosion, retained.
The improvement in physical properties is most noticeable in forged steels with a comparatively low carbon content; however, a useful improvement is also obtained when the invention is applied to castings made from higher carbon chromium steels.
The high-nitrogen chromium steels have a considerable resistance to grain growth at elevated temperatures and the additions of nickel or copper together or individually give a certain additional resistance to grain growth, which occurs when heated to elevated temperatures.
The nitrogen-containing steels according to the invention can easily be welded with an oxygen acetylene flame or by electrical means and weld points with improved properties are obtained.
Steels according to the invention contain 12-35% chromium, at least 0.2% and not more than 0.65% nitrogen, a carbon content of no more than 1% and a content of nickel or copper or both between 0.25 and 3% . If copper is used alone, then its content is preferably not more than 2.5% of the steel.
Should the steel be forged; then the carbon content is preferably below 0.3%. The nitrogen should be substantially uniformly distributed throughout the steel and preferably exceed 0.20%. The usual fractions of percentages of silicon and manganese, which are necessary to produce good steels, are of course preferably added.
