Rheostat with progressive adjustment, for strong currents. The adjustment of the electric current is generally obtained using a key rheostat. When the power surges. that the keys produce are at. to avoid, one generally employs liquid resistance rheostats, comprising .des electrodes which one immerses more or less in the liquid, seat of the resistance. These rheostats, which give progressive resetting, are not suitable in all Ù cases. because of their weight, the cooling mode by circulating water, and above all because they do not allow the resistance to be reduced to a value lower than. that, still quite high, of the residual resistance of the device.
On the other hand, the metallic rheostats with sliding contact .on the resistant wire, such as they are used for the adjustment of small powers sances, are not suitable any more for, great powers, to. because of their insufficient cooling, and of the sparks, which are formed when passing from one turn to another and which gradually roar the resistance element. For the strong currents, therefore, we have generally been satisfied with distributing outlets along the resistance element, each under the control of a switch.
The size and cost of a rheostat of this type lead to reducing the number of connections as much as possible, to the detriment of the fineness of the adjustment.
The most favorable form of the resistive element is that of a ribbon which, under low weight, has a large cooling surface; however, this form has heretofore only been used for touch rheostats.
The object of the present invention is a rheostat of great power, with ribbon, not having the drawbacks mentioned above although ensuring a progressive adjustment, characterized in that the resistant ribbon is wound in a spiral, the adjustment taking place. by a contact piece moving along the spiral. The spiral winding of the resistant tape is particularly favorable to the flow of heat. When the space is free between the turns, cooling can be achieved by a stream of air directed perpendicularly to the plane of the coil, the air passing between the turns.
The spiral winding has, moreover, the advantage of allowing the easy addition, in the magnetic field of the coils, of magnetic cores which strongly attenuate the sudden surges of current. This action is particularly interesting in the case where the rheostat is used for adjusting a direct current subject to strong and sudden variations, such as the electric welding current is for example.
The drawings show, by way of example. some embodiments of the rheostat according to the invention. A spiral coil of the resistant tape is shown in fig. 1, fig. 2) showing an A-B section of this coil. Fig. 3 relates to a two-section spiral winding, while fig. 4 shows, schematically, a double outlet, such as can be produced on a winding of this kind. Fig. 5 refers to an outlet, with compensated contact pressures, for a rheostat with a single resistant coil.
A rheostat with two spiral coils and magnetic dampers is shown in elevation in FIGS. 6 (front view) and î (side view). Fig. 8 shows a schematic arrangement of the cooling system by circulating air of several adjustable rheostat coils, arranged one beside the other on the same axis. A rheostat composed of four coils with two spirals is shown in fig. S, while Figs. 10 and 11 give a more detailed view of its double sockets.
Another model of socket outlet, particularly suitable for the rheostat at. single coil, is sketched in fig. 12.
The resistant tape a, fig. 1, wound in a spiral, is held rigidly in the desired position by the insulated bolts b which ensure the equidistance between turns. The current enters the coil through the terminal c and is collected by the socket e, shown in the form of a groove wheel pivoting on the rod z along which it can also slide. The wheel is guided radially by the spiral tape a against which it is pressed by the rod,. The latter, mounted on the x-shaft, rotates for adjustment in a plane parallel to the spool.
The current exits through the control shaft x of the rod.
The turns will be separated from each other by placing, for example, insulating washers%. fig. \ ?, between the turns on the insulated bolts b. To avoid excessive heating of the resistant band at the fixing points, resulting from the reduction in section due to the wise pitch of the bolt b, the resistant tape can be fitted, on one of its sides or on both, with a good conductive washer h pressed against the tape. Instead of distan cer the turns only at the fixing points, one could as well form the coil of a resistant tape and an insulating tape placed juxta, the insulating tape being of non-combustible material and of smaller width than the resistant tape.
In this case, the cooling of the resistant tape will be effected by the part of the tape protruding from the insulating tape.
i t may be advantageous to increase the thickness of the insulating tape along the socket surface, for example by folding back the tape on itself at its edge, over a small width , as shown by the tapes m, fig. 2, or by using a reinforced tape on its edges as indicated by the profiles lc of said figure. So that the mo lette, runs the entire length of the resistance tape a and thus regulates the current over the entire range of the adjustment regime, it is necessary, in the case envisaged at fi-. 1, that the rod.: Make as many turns as the coil has turns.
If it is desired to reduce the number of turns that the rod z must perform, while maintaining. roughly the same setting speed and the same section of resistant tape, the tape will be wound into two or more spiral sections, isolated from each other. The fi-. 3 shows a winding of this kind with two sections, one ai, carrying the current input terminal cl, the other a., The departure terminal c., The current outlet being formed by a body < with two contact pieces e, and e2 connected to one another. the other. The. :: rod is no longer used as a current conductor and the current socket on the x shaft is also avoided.
We see. that, in this case, the number of revolutions that the rod must perform to cover the entire adjustment speed is reduced by half. In the case of strong currents, it may be advantageous to double the number of outlet knobs. To take into account, however, the unequal distribution of the currents between two consecutive knobs placed on the:
n?, nic whorl - coming from the additional resistance of the resisted fraction of whorl between the two knurls - the latter will be connected by crossed connection pieces, as shown in fig. 4, relating to a two-section winding of #; pira.le. In this way, the four knobs e1, C_, e; and e, will be traversed by a current of equal intensity.
You can also wind the resistant tape bifariously, and use a contact piece which establishes the connection between the two neighboring wires. The terminals will then be fixed to the ends of the resistive wire, and the number of turns of the drive rod of the socket will be half the number of turns placed in series.
If the rheo stat consists only of a resistant coil, it will be advantageous to compensate for the force exerted on the current socket, by arranging, (on both sides of the coil, the contact parts e1 and e., Fig. 5. The contact pressure will be produced by the spring o, and the shaft, r controlling the movement of the contact parts will be relieved of any axial thrust.
An interesting embodiment of the rheostat according to the invention is shown in FIGS. 6 and 7. It relates to a rheostat with two coils provided with two laminated magnetic cores for damping sudden current surges. A rheostat of this type will be particularly suitable, for example, for adjusting the welding current of a direct current welding station. Magnetic dampers u, 2v have their inner core w surrounded by the spiral coils a of resistant tape, so that the current creates a damping field in the cores, which opposes any sudden fluctuation.
In fig. 6, the front vertical yoke v of the lower shock absorber is supposed to be removed so that the coil a is better visible. The internal cores w are cut in the middle to allow free passage for the control arm z of the current outlets arranged between the coils a, these outlets not being shown in the drawing. The arm z will be carried by the shaft x provided with the crank 6 serving to move the current outlets along the spiral ribbons, therefore to adjust the rheostat. One of the advantages of this arrangement resides in the fact that the damping effect by induction is proportional to the ohmic resistance inserted in the circuit.
To avoid that there is a potential difference between the arm z moving in the air gap y and the core zv, the iron cores will be connected to the current tap device z, x. In this way, the width of the cavity y can be reduced to the strict minimum, since any insulation of the z arm will be superfluous. The symmetrical arrangement of the coils a, between which the current outlet moves, offers the advantage that the strong pressures to be exerted on the contact parts are equal, and compensate each other, so that the arm z, being fully discharged d2 lateral stress,
can be very thin. The coils a, supposedly formed by the juxtaposition of the resistant tape and of a narrower insulating tape wound in a spiral one on the other, are made rigid by the insulating bolts 5 serving at the same time for the fixing of the coil with magnetic frames, using the connecting pieces 4. The whole can be mounted in a profiled iron frame bearing laterally perforated protective sheets 1 fitted with connection terminals 2 and above a protective sheet cover full 3. The number of coils and magnetic frames may naturally vary according to the types of rheostat considered.
The adjustment speed can be doubled or multiplied by coupling in series with the adjustable rheo stat one or more fixed resistance elements which can be individually switched off. A simple embodiment of an apparatus of this type consists in providing, for example, the rheostat with an additional, non-adjustable resistor element, - mounted on the frame of the rheostat with which it is integral, having an ohmic resistance of approximately same value as that of the rheostat. By switching the additional element on or off, by means of a switch or a third connection terminal, the rheostat setting speed can be doubled.
As several identical rheostats, connected in series or in parallel, can be used simultaneously in the case where the capacity of a single rheostat is too low, it will be advantageous, then, to place the devices on the same axis and to cool them artificially. by a common ventilation device. An example of such an arrangement is shown in fi g. 8.
A motor s, which can be coupled in series or in parallel with the rheostats and whose speed will vary according to the heat produced in the rheostats, drives a common fan r delivering the cooling air into the cylinder t containing the rheostats ta. The latter can be adjusted using the transmission pulley u and the cylinder n controlling the current tappings e. The coils of the rheostats, instead of being coupled in parallel as shown in fig. 8, could be coupled in series.
An example of the latter coupling is illustrated in FIG. 9 in which each of the four coils is supposed to contain two concentric spirals a1 and ca., with four turns each. Connections to the outside are made at the \? Terminals. It will be noted that each revolution of the shaft x, carrying the arms z, corresponds to the switching on or off of eight turns, so that four crank turns will suffice to cover the entire adjustment speed of the rheostat comprising thirty-two turns in series. The types of outlet may vary depending on the conditions of service.
If the resistant tape reaches high temperatures, it will be preferable to adopt a device in which the current passes from the movable contact piece to the resistant tape and not in the reverse direction. Indeed, if contact is made at the edge of the tape, the temperature rise produced by the concentration of the current. at the point of contact could cause material to transfer from the anode to the cathode. If the current passes from the throat wheel to the ribbon, there is no reason to fear that the latter will deteriorate, but, in order to avoid abnormal wear of the wheel, it will be useful to protect it. the contact surface by a metal whose oxide is a good current conductor, for example silver.
In this case, a socket outlet with several contact parts in parallel will preferably be used, for example as shown in FIG. 5. A side view of this socket is shown in fig. 12. The shaft x carries, through an insulating sheath, the fitting f in which are articulated, on either side of the. bo bine, supports g. These carry the articulated parts p, to which are fixed the rods: of the socket e. A coil spring 0. seen at the end in the figure, presses against each other the contact points arranged on either side of the coil, thus ensuring a contact pressure equally distributed over the four knobs .
The current can be brought to the wheels el, e .. by the conductor ring dl and brushes (not shown in the figure) carried by the part p, the good conductor ring dl itself being connected to the terminal d current input cl.
To avoid excessive heating of the resistant tape by concentrating the current at a point of contact on its very edge, the current can be collected at a small distance from the edge, using one or more pairs of small rollers between which the resistant tape is pinched (fig. 10 and 11). This type of outlet is particularly favorable in the case of strong currents flowing through pairs of coils, the coils of each pair being coupled together in series, as shown for example in fi * 9.
The resistant tapes al, fig. 10, two adjacent coils of the same pair of coils are interconnected by four rollers 7, preferably made of good conductor bronze, the raceway of which is at a small distance from the edge of the resis tape. The journals 8 of the rollers engage in holes made in the plates 9 articulated on the cross members 10 and 11. The upper 10 and lower 11 cross members are integral with the upper 12 and lower 13 guide flanges, in which s' engages the arms z. A single coil spring 0 is used to ensure an even contact pressure at the eight contact points of the device.
A contact socket of this type has the advantageous feature of ensuring the direct connection by the rollers between the tapes al without the current having to pass through a sliding contact. The journals of the rollers will therefore not be used for the transmission of current.
