Fig. 1 enthalten.
In.
Device for modulating the ultra-high frequency radiation emitted by a transmitter. The invention relates to a device for modulating the ultra-high frequency radiation emitted by a transmitter.
Ultra high frequency vibrations of a wavelength on the order of z. B. 20 cm can be known using Lin sen, prisms or the like, if they are made of suitable material,. B. paraffin, are made, in a similar way as the light is concentrated, reflected and refracted.
Although there are many advantages to using ultra-high frequency vibrations, it is difficult to modulate them in amplitude without experiencing frequency mange. It was found, however, that this drawback can be avoided by using a device that is electrically independent of the ultra-high frequency generator.
is, is arranged in the beam path of the vibrations to be emitted, and that means are provided which change the electrical or mechanical properties of this device as a function of the modulating voltages.
The invention has the purpose of creating a device of the type mentioned above, which can be used with good success and make relatively cheap ago. leaves.
The device according to the invention has at least one discharge tube, which is to be arranged in the beam path of the ultra-high frequency radiation to be modulated and the discharge of which is dependent on the modulating vibrations.
In the drawings, in Figs. 1 to 30 embodiments and application examples of the subject invention are shown schematically.
The embodiment shown in Fig. 1 has an almost spherical tube 1 which is filled with an easily ionizable gas. One of the electrodes of the device consists of a circular metal strip, 3, which has been painted on the inner wall of the shell 1 or otherwise applied.
The other electrode consists of a wire 5 which is perpendicular to the plane of the annular electrode 3 in the center of the ring. The electrode 5 is tensioned by means of a spring 7 ge. It can be connected to the electrodes 3 and 5 via .the conductors 11 respectively. 9 a constant or variable voltage can be applied. If a constant voltage is applied, the gas Zn is ionized in a certain area within the envelope 1.
The dashed lines indicated the distribution of the electric field within the envelope, and there in the area; in that the electric field appears, the gas is ionized, they indicate: likewise the area in which ionization occurs. The shape of this area is that of a lens, thick in the middle and thin on the edge.
Since the refractive index of an ionized gas for ultrahigh frequency vibrations is less than @ 1, the speed with which these vibrations pass through the center of this gaseous lens is greater than the speed of propagation through air, and because the shape of the lens is biconvex, so a diverging ultra-high frequency beam bundle is obtained with the lens described.
Various gases or gas mixtures can be used in the lens; but it is generally one of the noble gases such. B. Neon, or. A mixture of noble gases used. The gas pressure can be between wide limits; however, it is expediently so low that the gas is uniformly ionized in the ionized area.
It is evident that the properties of the device described are mainly dependent on the shape of the ionized area and are completely independent of that of the shell 1. In Fig. 2, a device is Darge provides, which is used to converge a gerichte th beam. It has a disk-like casing 13 which is thicker at the edge than in the middle.
The one electrode consists of a metal ring 15, -der chen on the inner surface of the sheath 13 stri or applied in another way. The other electrode is designed as a ball 17 which is arranged in the center of the shell 13; it is carried by a rod 19 melted down at 2.1.
The device shown in FIG. 2 can contain the same gases as the diverging lens in FIG. The gas pressure can also be the same. In the case of this converging lens, however, the effect largely depends on the shape of the envelope, since the latter determines the area in which ionization occurs.
In. Fig. 3 shows a device which has a plurality of circular, gas-filled Röh Ren 2; 3 has. Each tube has two electrodes 25, .denen; a voltage is applied which is higher than the toning voltage of the gas. This device can operate both converging and diverging by changing the intensity of the discharge in each tube 23. In order to obtain a divergent lens, the intensity of the discharge in the outer tubes is made greater than that in the inner tubes.
In this way, a refractive index of the flat disk that increases towards the center is obtained. To maintain a converging lens, the intensity of the discharge is made greatest in the innermost tube and lowest in the outermost tube.
4 indicates the manner in which the degree of ionization can be regulated in the various tubes 2-3. All tubes are connected in parallel for this purpose and in series with each of them there is a resistor. The outer tube lies directly on the terminals of a voltage source, while a resistor 27 between the electrodes of the following tubes and the voltage source whose value increases regularly.
The resistor 27 connected in series with the innermost tube has the highest value, so that the intensity of the discharge is lowest in this tube.
In FIG. 5, a device is shown which contains several gas-filled tubes 29, each of which has two electrodes 31. If the gas in the tubes 29 is ionized, they work like a mirror from which the ultra-high frequency vibrations emitted by a transmitting antenna A-A which are placed in the vertical plane of symmetry are reflected.
In Fig. 6, a prism is shown, which is composed of several tubes 33 of the type shown in Fig. 5 Darge. These tubes can be connected in parallel or in series.
Fig. 7 illustrates a diffusing grating which contains two sets of elements 37 and 3,9 and in which the intensity of the discharge in the elements 37 depends on the intensity of the discharge in the elements. 39 differs. A conspicuous bundle of ultra-high frequency oscillations is refracted by each set of elements, the refractive index being different for each set of elements, in other words the ultra-high frequency beam is split into two components which oscillate in phase.
For the effect of the in Fig. 7 given device, it is completely unimportant which outgoing rays of the tube group 37, and which of the tube group 39 belong. The direction is determined by the ionization voltages of the tube groups and it is only essential that the ionization voltage of the groups is different and therefore the incident bundle is broken down into two components.
In FIG. 8, a prism is shown which consists of elements 41 which correspond to the tubes 29 in FIG. The tubes have different degrees of ionization, which increase regularly from the first to the last tube. When changing the degree of ionization, a change in the direction of the emerging bundle is obtained.
The electro-optical devices described above can be used individually and in combination for modulating ultra-high frequency oscillations. It can e.g. B. in Fig. 1 and 2 dargestell th devices in the manner shown in Fig. 9 are combined. The other figures show various possible uses of the electric lenses described.
In FIG. 10, an electrical lens according to FIG. 1 is arranged in the beam path of the vibrations emitted by a transmitter T with a parabolic reflector 43.
The modulating voltages are. Between tween the electrodes 3 and 5 of the lens ge places, whereby the refractive index or in other words the 'opening angle of the .di verifying bundle depending on the over a. Transformer 45 supplied, modulating voltages. is regulated. There: the parabolic reflector 47 he reaching, received energy. depends on the opening angle of the diverging bundle, the amount of energy received is modulated according to the signal to be transmitted.
Another type of lens used to modulate a directed beam is shown in FIG. The lens has a spherical envelope 49 which is filled with a gas. High-frequency coils 51 are arranged on both sides of this casing, to which modulated high-frequency vibrations are fed from a modulator 53 which is connected to an oscillator 55 on the one hand and to a microphone 57 on the other. The gas is ionized by the modulated high-frequency oscillations.
In Fig. 12. a device 70 is Darge provides that can be used in aircraft or the like. This device has a plurality of gas-filled tubes 69 which, as indicated in FIG. 5, are connected in parallel. A DC voltage modulated by a specific signal is fed to these tubes. The tube group can be placed at a point on the earth where an aircraft pilot wishes to determine his position, e.g. B. at the corner of a landing pad. The flying machine is provided with means for the outside and for receiving a directed beam.
In the figure, the transmitter reflector provided with a dipole antenna 7 is denoted by 71 and the reflector used for receiving, which is provided with a receiving dipole antenna 77, is denoted by 75. About the location of the landing area. To determine, a directed beam is emitted, which is thrown back from the earth and caught by the reflector 75 conditions. If the aircraft flies over the device 70, the reflected beam is modulated by the signal and the pilot can determine his position.
A similar apparatus can be used to detect ships in the dark or in the fog.
In FIG. 13, a similar embodiment is shown as in FIG. It has a high frequency generator 101, e.g. B. a magnetron oscillator, which is electrically connected to a dipole antenna 103 which is arranged within a parabolic reflector 105.
The transmitted by the antenna 103. Vibrations are fed to a receiving antenna 109 which is arranged in a reflector 107 and connected to a receiving circuit 111.
The device 112, which is used to modulate the emitted vibrations, has a casing 113, within which the electrodes 115 and 117 are arranged. These electrodes are connected to a voltage source 119 via a resistor 121 and secondary winding 123 of a low-frequency transformer 125. The modulating voltages are the primary winding 127 of the transformer 125 leads. The gas present in the tube 112 is ionized by the voltage of the source 119; the degree of ionization is regulated as a function of the modulating voltages.
It can: with the new device described precisely modulated in amplitude vibrations can be obtained. The only frequency change that could occur is caused by the energy that is reflected by the device 112 and causes a slight change in the load on the antenna 103 within the reflector.
If a flat, ionized gas layer is used for modulation, the energy reflected from this layer can be prevented from reaching the transmitter by placing the modulating device at an angle with respect to the direction of the axis of the beam being sent out . Another advantage that can be achieved with the device is that the oscillator can be set in such a way that
that the output energy reaches the highest value without taking into account the point of the characteristic that is most favorable for modulation purposes.
In Fig. 14, an improved Ausfüh approximately the form of the circuit shown in FIG. In this embodiment, there is a modulating device 129 which has a spherical, gas-filled tube 13'1. The two electrodes 133 and <B> 135 </B> are connected to a voltage source 137. In this embodiment, the electrode 135 is designed as a metal ring, while the electrode 135 consists of a conductor that goes through the center of the ring and runs perpendicular to the plane of the latter.
The receiving circuit has a tube 130 which is arranged in the focal point of a reflector 1321 and is filled with a gas which is easily ionized when a voltage is applied between the two electrodes 136 and 1'38 within the envelope 134.
The tube 130 is carried by two conductors 140 and 142, which also connect the electrodes 136 and 138 to the ionization voltage source 144 via a resistor 146 and the primary winding 148 of a transformer 150. The secondary winding of this transformer is connected to the input circuit of an amplifier 152, from which the received low-frequency vibrations are fed to a loudspeaker 154.
It is assumed that the effect of the receiver is based on the assumption that the modulated vibrations received change the degree of ionization of the gas in the tube 130. Since the ionization graph changes as a function of the amplitude of the vibrations received, the changes in amplitude of the current supplied to the low-frequency amplifier correspond to this, in other words the output energy of the low-frequency amplifier corresponds to the modulation of the vibrations received.
The degree of ionization is probably regulated by the fact that the transmitted vibrations propagate through the gas. However, it should also be possible that the received beam generates a variable voltage between the electrodes, and that this voltage brings about the change in ionization.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 15, a modulating device is used in which the discharge tube 147 has two electrodes 149 and 151 which are arranged such that the area in which ionization takes place is perfectly flat. This area coincides with the plane of electrode 149.
The distance between the wires 155 of the electrode 149 is suitably small in relation to the wavelength of the transmitted vibrations and the gas pressure is suitably such that the Crook's dark room is small in relation to the distance between the wires. The ionization voltage can be supplied by a current whose frequency is above the audibility limit.
A generator that generates such a current is denoted by <B> 157 </B>; it is connected to a modulator 159 to which the voltages are supplied to the modulate generated in a microphone 161. Certain precautions must be taken when using a multi-wire electrode 149. This is because it is known that a transmission circuit of the type described transmits a polarized beam.
Since the distance between the wires 155 is less than a wavelength, they work like a reflector when they are arranged so that they are parallel to the plane of polarization. This disadvantage can be eliminated by arranging the electrode 149 in such a way that the wires 155 run perpendicular to the plane of polarization. Thus, assuming that the plane of polarization is perpendicular, the wires 155 are horizontal.
If desired, as indicated in FIG. 16, a third electrode can be used to regulate the degree of ionization of a modulating device 16: 3. In this case, a constant ionization voltage is applied to the electrodes 16, 5 and 167 via a resistor 169 and the modulating voltages are fed to the grid 171 via a transformer 173, which is bridged by a resistor 175.
It is expedient to have a bias voltage which is negative with respect to the anode 16-5 and which is supplied by a battery 177 on the control grid 171. Although the ionized gas discharge can only be regulated a little by means of the control grid 171, this is sufficient for the modulation of the transmitted vibrations, in particular when the control grid 171 is arranged in the Crook's dark room.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 17, the modulating device 179 is formed as a prism, by which the beam is refracted when it passes through the prism.
The angle of refraction depends on the degree of ionization of the iCTase in the tubes from which the prism is composed. In order to receive the vibrations sent out in this way, the reflector 107 must assume a certain position in relation to the received bundle.
The curve 18.1, which gives the energy in the beam as a function of the distance from the center, has the shape of a cone. The received energy is in the middle pointed cone iam, largest and on both sides towards the middle part of the curve between the points <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> is almost straight.
It is desirable and advantageous that the part of the beam in which the energy is evenly distributed is in front of the reflector 107. and swings here. This can be achieved when the center line of the cone moves between the limits indicated in the figure.
The prism shown in FIG. 17 can be constructed in the manner shown in FIG. This prism consists of a long tube 183 which is bent back and forth in this way. that it has been given the shape of a prism. The tube is with gas. z. B.
Neon,! Filled and can be ionized by means of two electrodes 185 and 187, which are each arranged at one end of the tube 183.
If the directed beam has a wavelength such that the reflector 105 must be relatively large in relation to the dimensions of a gas-filled tube, which are easy to produce in practice, it is advantageous to design the reflector in such a way that, as in Fig. 18 is indicated,
the rays emitted by the reflector come together in a single point. This makes it possible to use a small tube -189, @ because this can be arranged at a point where the directed beam has a small cross-section. To send off a bundle of parallel rays, a lens 191 can be arranged behind the modulating device 189.
In Fig. 19 is a. Device Darge provides; - which enables the emission of a sharply delimited modulated beam. If the wind sends a directed beam, it is difficult, even at a wavelength of a few centimeters, to keep a beam whose cross-section is sharply defined.
The reason for this is that the wave length is not exceptionally small compared to the dimensions of the reflector, as is the case with light. In the device illustrated in FIG. 20, the reflector designated 190 is so large that the energy emitted by the dipole antenna 192 is sharply limited. The resulting beam consequently has a comparatively large cross-section, so that the receiving reflector does not need to be extremely sharp.
This can e.g. B. be undesirable in secret telephony. As a result, instead of modulating the entire beam, a modulating device 194 is arranged in the beam path of part of the emitted vibrations.
The device 194 can be of a type which absorbs, reflects and refracts the transmitted vibrations, but it must not be of a type which induces beam dispersion.
FIG. 22 illustrates an embodiment in which a gas-filled tube 195 is used, which is bent in the shape of a rectangular grid and has two electrodes 197 and 199. The distance between the adjacent parts of the tube is e.g.
B. smaller than the wavelength of the emitted vibrations. Instead of the device shown in FIG. 2, 2: the devices shown in FIGS. 15 and 25 can also be used.
The invention is not limited to directional transmission systems, but can also be applied to radio transmitters.
FIG. 20 shows a dipole antenna 196 which is attached to a mast 198 and is surrounded by an ionized gas that is contained in a long glass tube 201. The high frequency vibrations are generated in a generator 203,
.which is connected to the antenna. The modulating voltages are generated in a microphone 219 and fed to the electrodes 207 and 209 of the discharge tube 201 via a low-frequency transformer 215 and a resistor 211. The ionization voltage is supplied by the voltage source 205.
Instead of a dipole antenna, an antenna such as that shown in FIG. 2'1 can also be arranged inside the tube 20.1.
In Fig. 21, the antenna is not arranged in a gas-filled space, but is surrounded by a helical tube 2-27 which is filled with an ionized gas. The electrodes of this tube, to which the modulating voltages are fed, are labeled 223 and 22.5.
The high-frequency energy is fed to the antenna 2.28 from the generator 23.5 via two conductors 238 which are connected to a self-induction coil 229 located in the antenna 228. .
A few further embodiments of gas-filled modulating devices are shown in FIGS.
FIG. 24 shows a gas-filled tube which can be used in place of the devices 112 and 129 in FIGS. 13 and 14. This tube has a sheath 237, within which a cylindrical electrode 239 and a rod-shaped electrode 241 are arranged. When used for modulation purposes, this tube is expediently arranged in such a way that the electrode 241 runs parallel to the axis of the directed beam.
The gas-filled tube shown in FIG. 25 has a shell 243, within which the electrodes 245 and 247 with the elements 249 and 249 lying between them. 2.51 are arranged. The elements 249 and 251 can be rod-shaped and are all in the same plane. This arrangement will result in a flat ionized layer that coincides with the plane of the electrodes 245 and 247.
In a modulating device according to the exemplary embodiments described, the required ionization voltage can be obtained by using an outer coil 2, 53 or: by using outer electrodes 25, 5, shown in FIG High frequency voltage.
The tubes shown in d, en FIGS. 26 and 27 @ can be used in place of the tube 147 in FIG. 15 if. Instead of the voltage source 157, a high-frequency voltage source with a frequency of the order of magnitude of 106 Per is used.
In Fig. 28 a device is Darge provides in which a dipole antenna 257 is net angeord within a gas-filled tube 2159 and forms one of the electrodes. The other electrode is labeled 261. When operating this device, the ionization voltage and the modulating voltages are applied to the electrodes 257 and 261 in the manner indicated in FIG.
The connection to the antenna 257 takes place at a junction of the conductor 260.
In Fig. 2.9 a device for modulating a directional beam is shown in which the beam is reflected as a function of, the modulating, voltages. The gas-filled tube 263 has an umbrella-shaped cathode 2,6.5 and an anode 267. If the correct voltage is applied between electrodes 265 and 2.67, an ionized gas layer forms which coincides with the surface of cathode 265.
This gas layer reflects part of the energy to be emitted. The reflectivity of the gas layer is regulated by changing the ionization as a function of the voltage changes supplied to electrodes 2.65 and 267.
The type of gas used in the modulating device can be very different. Since some ionized gases have selective absorption for some wavelengths, a larger modulation effect can be obtained if work is carried out in the vicinity of such an absorption area.
30 shows the absorption capacity of a modulating device in the vicinity of an absorption area as a function of the current in the modulating device.
It can be seen from this curve that a resonance effect occurs with the gas for which the curve was recorded, which can be used for modulating beams by regulating the current in the modulating device. until the point x, the curve, has been reached. The current in the modulating device is regulated by the modulating voltages and the absorption capacity fluctuates between points y and z.
The selective absorption effect can also be used in the demodulator shown in FIG.
For this purpose, when an unmodulated beam is received in the reflector 132, the current in the tube 134 is adjusted by means of the resistor 146 in such a way that the point x on the curve 31 is reached. Such a setting causes a change in the amplitude of the vibrations received. relatively large changes in current in the tube 134.
