Process and installation for drying materials, in particular for drying wood. The present invention relates to a process for drying materials, more especially -drying wood, a process in which the material to be dried is carried by a scale, and to an installation for carrying out this process.
It has already been proposed to adjust the drying as a function of the phenomena which characterize the progressive desiccation, and in particular on the basis of the weight loss which accompanies this desiccation. As a function of the variations in weight recorded by the scale, opening or closing, shutters or other means acting on the humidity of the air passing through the dryer were controlled. But, with such means, it was not possible to operate the drying as a function of time according to a predetermined law. However, an automatic adjustment of the drying as a function of time is of considerable practical importance.
We know, it is true, adjustment devices acting as a function of time, for which the balance, on which the material to be treated is suspended, tilts more and more under the effect of the loss of weight, and actuates an indicator member which, theoretically, must describe a certain trajectory between -two guides. If said member comes to deviate from its path, adjustment means come into action so as to re-establish suitable drying conditions.
The process according to the invention, in which the desiccation must take place according to a predetermined law expressing the loss of weight of the material to be treated, as a function of time, is characterized in that the operation of the balance is regulated, during the drying operation, in accordance with said law, so that the balance remains in equilibrium as long as the weight loss takes place according to said law, but as soon as these conditions are no longer met,
an imbalance occurs and causes the action of means suitable for acting on the evolution of the drying. in the direction of re-establishing the equilibrium, the balance.
The installation for the implementation of the method according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a scale intended to carry the material to be treated and comprising a mobile which has to move during the drying to keep the scale in equilibrium, this mobile being controlled by, kinematic means acting as a function of said predetermined law.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, some embodiments of the installation according to the invention.
The fi-. 1 and 2 schematically show two installations intended for drying, materials such as in particular wood; Fig. 3 shows on a larger scale a detail of the installation shown in FIG. 2; Figs. 4 and 5 show auxiliary devices which can be used in combination with the installations according to FIGS. 1 and 2.
The wood must be dried with great care to prevent it from splitting or warping. It is important, in particular, to carry out the drying operation progressively, and to prevent the wood from being put under tension.
In the examples shown, the load of wood to be dried is suspended from a scale, which is controlled by organs acting in such a way that the assembly remains in equilibrium when the drying is carried out according to a certain predetermined law as a function of time. , but an imbalance occurs as soon as the drying slows down or accelerates with respect to the theoretical speed corresponding to said law.
The instantaneous imbalance is used to actuate, with the aid of relays, organs acting on the rate of drying phenomena. This is how it is possible to act on the temperature of the oven or the speed of the gas stream introduced into the oven. Said members can also modify the humidity of the oven, for example by acting in such a way that fresh air can be admitted through an orifice cooperating with a shutter or valve. In this case, the oven must, of course, be. waterproof.
It is also obvious that it is possible to act simultaneously on various factors (temperature, degree of hygiene, etc.).
Practice has shown that it is advantageous to keep the temperature of the oven constant for the duration of the treatment, in particular in the case where action is taken on the humidity. Maintaining the constant temperature -is obtained by -thermostats, this temperature being, for example, -de <B> 60 '</B> for oak, and -de 80 for fir.
The installation shown in fig. 1 com takes a balance which is subjected, on the one hand, to the weight of the load of timber being treated and, on the other hand, to the weight of a mobile r. The scale itself is made up of a system of levers.
One of these levers, designated by the, cooperates by one of its ends with a lever h which carries at its free end the tare <I> m. </I> The opposite end of the lever is subjected to the weight of the load to be processed, which acts in the direction of the arrow <I> x. </I> The lever rests it by means of a movable knife-or slider q on a bar l4 which, in turn,
rests on levers 16 and 16 by means of knife parts fixed on, the latter near their points of oscillation. The free ends of the levers 1 'and 1s act jointly on an indicator -dispositif described below.
The mobile r which acts on a lever s mobile around a point n $, is caused to move on the lever s according to a law such that the balance remains in equi free when the weight of said load, and consequently its drying , are modified according to the law, according to the time, which one fixed. The movement of the mobile r on the lever s is controlled by means of a cam si acting, through the intermediary of a rod s2, on the mobile r.
The free end of the lever also acts on an indicator device which gives at each instant the theoretical quantity of water according to the aforesaid law, while the other indicator device mentioned above gives the quantity of water real con held in the wood.
The indications provided by these two devices must be very similar, so that we can often do with only one of these two devices, which can, for example, be constituted by a dynamometer on which an element of the balance acts. . The needle of the dynamometer indicates for example 160 at the start of a drying operation, if it is a wood containing 60% water, and it indicates 100 at the end of drying.
In the example shown in FIG. 1, two dynamometers p '<I> and </I> p2 are provided. On the dynamometer p 'act, as has already been pointed out, the two levers lfi and l', the deviation of which is a function of the weight of the load which decreases during drying.
Two angled levers <I> t 'and </I> t2 pivoting around fixed axes n', n = cooperate respectively with the dynamometers p1 and p2 and act on either side on an oscillating member t3, which activates a control relay u. The latter can control, in the event of a free imbalance of the balance, by means of a cable, an air intake flap c of the dryer; fans in which the load of wood is located.
As is easily understood, the lever t 'is subjected to the action of the weight of the load ment, while the other lever, t2, is subjected to the action of the mobile r.
At the start of a drying operation, the entire balance is brought to such an equilibrium that the dynamometer p 'indicates the proportion of water initially contained in the wood. To this end, the cursor q is moved so as to vary the point of application of the force transmitted to the levers l $ and le and the weight of the tare 7n is adjusted, so as to balance the weight of the wood. dry.
This tare, as in the examples according to fig. 2 and 3, can be constituted, for example, by a container containing more or less -de shot.
In the examples shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the load A, placed inside a dryer B, is suspended by the intermediary of appropriate levers from a roman scale whose flail constitutes the aforesaid lever s.
On this lever moves the mobile r provided with an index r @. It further comprises a gra duation on which said mobile indicates the amount of water -du .chargement. This graduation is arranged in such a way that the mobile r, if it is placed at the start of drying, in front of the division corresponding to the initial water proportion, can arrive in front of the zero division, when the drying is finished. .
The mobile r is articulated to a rod r 'which itself is linked - in an articulated manner. To a sliding rod r3, This rod is driven in accordance with the law of drying as a function of time, for example using a finger r4 integral with said rod and penetrating. in a groove <I> r </I> made; on a cylinder <I> r </I> driven in continuous rotation. The shape of said groove responds to the chosen drying law.
But it is understood that the displacement .de the rod r 'could, here also, -be obtained using .de the cam shown in FIG. 1 or - in any other suitable manner.
When the drying slows down or accelerates in an exaggerated way, the flail leaves its position of equilibrium which had been obtained at the beginning of the drying by adjusting the tare m. This movement of the flail is transmitted by means of a rod ul to a pressure relay which actuates the air intake flap. Instead of this pressure relay, an electric relay could be used, for example.
Under certain conditions, it may happen that the .degree hygrometric undergoes, as a result of the opening or closing of the shutter, exaggerated variations.
To avoid this inconvenience, it is possible to provide for the actuation <I> of the </I> or flaps c, in addition to members actuated by the beam, other control members acting as a function of: difference which exists at any moment between the real hygrometric degree and the theoretical degree of hygrometry which one should obtain, if the drying continued in accordance with the law which one fixed.
To a law giving the weight loss as a function of time, must in fact, if one works under constant conditions of temperature and air displacement, correspond another law giving the humidity level also as a function of time.
In fig. 4 are represented organs which act according to the hygrometric law. The pressure relay u, with the aid of which the flaps c (or other shut-off members) are actuated, comprises a second valve u2, or else another pressure relay is provided.
The second valve (or the second relay) is controlled by a lever x1, linked to a psychrometer x '' ', which. is influenced as a function of the hygrometric state of the dryer, said psychrometer being for example constituted by a wet thermometer. On the other hand, the lever x1 is subjected to the action: of an organ controlled according to the hygrome law.
With this effect, for example, one can make act at one of the ends - of the lever x1 a kind of dynamometer or manometer x3 in fluenced by the expansion of the fluid - of the thermometer comprised by the psychrometer, tan -dis that the the other end is linked to the valve u2. The lever x1 rotates around the movable organ x4, which is actuated, for example,
by a ramp or a cam x ', the profile of which corresponds to the humidity law.
In this way, it is possible to ensure that the humidity will never drop below a certain limit.
The flail s can also be used to actuate organs coming into play when the evolution of the drying deviates - in an exa managed way - from that envisaged, in particular if the wood dries too slowly. These organs are arranged in such a way that they momentarily stop the movement of the mobile r, to allow the scourge to quickly regain its balance and to reestablish the normal course of treatment.
To this end, there is provided between the cylinder r 'and its clockwork mechanism a clutch system x', capable of being disengaged by a lever x 'linked to the balance s when the flail takes a too inclined position corresponding to too slow drying. This positive is. Therefore a device & safety, which comes into play only when the adjustment devices are not sufficient to make the pace -du drying in accordance with the law that has been set.
