Les fig. 1 et 2 montrent, l'une en coupe transversale, l'autre en coupe longitudinale, une première forme d'exécution servant à la fabrication de plaques. ,de silice fondue; dans ce dispositif, la résistor est situé au-dessus de la substance à traiter; La fig. .3 est une coupe longitudinale d'une variante, dans laquelle la plaque obte nue par le résistor précédent est ramollie par l'action .d'un second résistor situé au-dessous d'elle, puis ensuite moulée;
Les -dispositifs représentés et décrits offrent, en autre, les avantages réunis des résistors connus et -de l'arc électrique, sans en avoir les inconvénients, ,à savoir: 10 Par rapport aux résistors en contact avec la matière à chauffer, ils évitent les in convénients provenant de réactions dues à ce contact; 2o Par rapport aux résistors appliqués contre les parois de l'enceinte à chauffer, ils évitent les déperditions -de chaleur par ces parois;
Method of electric heating, in particular for melting substances with a high melting point, and device for its implementation. The present invention, due to. MM. Henri George and Gaston Delpech, includes an electric heating process, in particular for melting. substances with a high melting point, and a device for carrying out this process.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that one uses -as heating agent at least one carbon resistor which is arranged in such a way that there is no contact either with the. substance to be heated, nor with the walls of the heating chamber, and in that the substance to be heated is moved opposite the resistor and in a direction practically perpendicular to its length, that is to say normal to the direction of the current flowing through it, in order to obtain a substantially equal distribution of heat on all points of said substance.
The device for implementing this method is characterized in that it comprises at least one carbon resistor arranged in such a way, in: a heating chamber, that it has no contact or with the walls, of this enclosure, nor with the substance to be heated, and in that it comprises means for -displacing the substance to be heated in, with respect to the resistor, in a direction practically perpendicular to its length, that is to say , say normal to.
the direction of the current flowing through it, in sight. to obtain a substantially equal distribution of heat on all points -de said substance.
The resistor is preferably constructed of graphite, which admits a very high current density and can thus be brought to a very high temperature.
The appended drawing represents, by way of examples, several embodiments of the device according to the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 show, one in cross section, the other in longitudinal section, a first embodiment used for the manufacture of plates. , fused silica; in this device, the resistor is located above the substance to be treated; Fig. .3 is a longitudinal section of a variant, in which the plate obtained bare by the preceding resistor is softened by the action .d'un second resistor located below it, then then molded;
The. fig. 4 and 5 represent one the axial section, the other the transverse section of a second form of execution in the form of a rotary furnace with a horizontal axis for the melting of metals, glass and other substances which can be brought by heat to. liquid state; Figs. 6 and 7 represent one the axial section, the other the transverse section of a third embodiment in the form of a rotary furnace with horizontal axis for the manufacture of tubular bodies.
Fig. 8 shows the vertical section of a fourth embodiment which is a rotary kiln. vertical axis for the manufacture of hollow articles having a revolving shape, such as crucibles, and FIG. 9 shows a detail of this type of oven.
The. devices shown in fig. 1 to 7 comprise a resistor consisting of a straight rod 1, made of carbon or of graphite, the ends of which are housed in sleeves 2 carried by mobile plates, 3, also made of carbon. These plates are fixed in metal frames 4, which are connected to the terminals of a source of electric current, not shown.
In the fi-. 8 and 9, the resistor is a bent rod l 'whose: ends 2' and 2 "are clamped between two half-discs 3 'and 3" made of carbon, one of these ends being in contact with one of the half-discs and isolated from each other by means of insulating wedges 5 'and 5 ". These half-discs are fixed in half-frames 4' and 4" also isolated from one another and connected to the electric source terminals.
The heating chamber is made up of either a casing 6! in graphite acting as a vault (fig. 1, 2 and 3), heat-insulated, externally by carbon black 24, either by a metal drum 7 (fig. 4 to 7), or by a metal box 8 fixed to a rotation shaft 9 (fig. 8).
The movable plates 3 are constructed so as to form the side walls of the heating chamber. Likewise, the half-discs 3 'and 3 "of figures 8 and 9 serve as a cover for the heating chamber 8.
In the devices represented by FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the substance to be melted 10 'is distributed in the pulverulent state on a transport member 11, which passes it under the heating means constituted by the resis ter 1 and the enclosure 6, which is arranged in such a way that the heat is radiated, through an opening made in the lower part of the enclosure, on the substance to be melted; its speed of movement is adjusted so as to melt a determined thickness of this substance.
The thus melted plate 12 continues to. run on rollers 13, while the unmelted powder layer is discharged at the end of the horizontal run of the conveyor 11.
By giving this conveyor a longitudinal back and forth movement and by feeding it alternately, with raw material, sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other of the heating chamber, the plate obtained is formed by the superposition of thin molten layers, which has advantages for the manufacture of transparent quartz using crushed rock crystal.
In the device of FIG. 3, the plate 12, cleared as previously of the unmelted powder layer, is reheated fairy by means of a second heating means consisting, like the first, by a resistor 14 and an enclosure 15, which aims, to melt the pulverulent material adhering to the underside of the plate 12. This plate, thus glazed on -ses -two sides, can then be shaped, for example printed or molded, by suction, in.
a 1j6 mold capable of moving with the plate during the time required for the wetting.
In the device of FIGS. -1 and 5, the rotary furnace comprises, in addition to the drum 7, a refractory lining 17: in which the fusion takes place, and an insulating material 18 housed between the refractory lining and the drum.
An opening 19, closed by a door 20, serves both as a loading orifice and a pouring orifice.
In the device of the fi-. 6 and 7, the raw material 10 is introduced, in the pulverized state, into the interior of the rotary furnace constituted by the drum 7, before the installation of the resistor 1 and the members which support it. Thanks to. the. centrifugal force produced by the. rotating the oven, the slow pulverized material remains applied against the inner wall of the drum.
It is: easy, to. using a template, to make it take a form of revolution having for generator the profile of the template. In the case of the. silica, which has a high viscosity, this form is preserved in the molten part.
In the device of FIGS. 8 and 9, we also introduce the. raw material 10, in the pulverulent state, inside the tower furnace constituted by the. box 8; by giving this oven a suitable speed, it adheres. matter against. interior parai of the. box and it is internally given a determined profile by means of a template that is removed before: to pass the current. The molten material, held by centrifugal force, keeps the shape given by the barit. In the case of silica, or other pasty melting materials, parts can thus be obtained including; the shapes differ appreciably from those of the equilibrium paraboloid.
In the case of pasty melting, the speed of rotation of the furnace can be gradually reduced from the moment when the material has. begins to. to melt.
With the rotating oven of fig. 6 and 7, it is possible to obtain, in the same operation, a series of sections of tubes by placing in the furnace, transversely to its axis and at distances determined by the length of these sections, graphite washers which partition the raw material load. It is also possible to obtain a tube split in the direction of its length by placing a graphite blade in the following charge im: e generator of the furnace.
The tube thus split can then be developed in the form of a plate. Finally, it is possible to evacuate, at the end of fusion, through the periphery of the drum, all or part of the unfused under the action of centrifugal force; the plastic ingot is then molded either in the remaining sand or in the wall of the furnace.
In fig. 1 to 7, the resistor is represented in the form of a cylindrical rod, but it is understood that its shape may vary. It is thus possible to use resistors -de variable sections, tubular or multiple, for example with three rods supplied in three-phase and mounted in a star pattern on suitable plates; this variant is applicable to large diameter rotary furnaces.
A suitable gaseous fluid can be circulated between the resistor and the substance to be heated, to prevent, according to the. case, reduction, carburization or oxidation of the treated materials and to drive out of the furnace the vapors which evolve.
The circulation of gas between the resistor and the substance to be heated is represented diagrammatically by a fan 21 placed at the end of a nozzle 22 (FIG. 6), in communication with the enclosure to be heated. In the case of suction, the fan can be replaced by a natural draft device constituted by a chimney 23: (fig. 2 and 3).
In the various devices represented and described, it is noted that the resistor has no contact with the substance to be heated and with the walls of the heating chamber. In addition, in these different devices, the. sub stance to. heating moves in a direction practically perpendicular to the length of the resistor, that is to say in a direction normal to the direction of the heating current, which allows a substantially distribution to be obtained. equal heat on all. dots. -of the substance.
The -dispositifs represented and described offer, in addition, the combined advantages of the known resistors and -of the electric arc, without having the drawbacks, namely: Compared to resistors in contact with the material to be heated, they avoid disadvantages arising from reactions due to this contact; 2o Compared to the resistors applied against the walls of the enclosure to be heated, they avoid heat losses by these walls;
30 Compared to the electric arc, they prevent the fall of ash and particles from the electrodes and have a higher power factor which can reach unity; Compared to the previously mentioned electric heating systems, they have a greater temperature regularity, because their action is less localized.
We know that, in order to reduce the disadvantages of this particularly sensitive location in furnaces heated by the electric arc, it is customary, in certain electric furnaces, to move the arc -in the direction of the line which joins its poles, but the distribution of heat remains unequal at the same time.
