Q bezw.
Electric discharge tube for emitting light. It has already been proposed to use sodium-containing electric discharge tubes for lighting purposes, which have already been provided with a hot cathode and a noble gas that promotes ignition. Up to now, krypton, xenon or sometimes argon have been used as the noble gas.
According to the invention, which relates to a discharge tube of the type described, neon is used as the main component of the gas filling and the electrode spacing is chosen to be so small that the discharge has the character of an arc discharge without a positive column.
It is well known that a thermionically electron-emitting hot cathode gives rise to an arc discharge in its vicinity. If the distance between this cathode and the anode is large enough, in addition to this arc discharge there is also a positive column which is generally separated from the arc discharge by the Fara-day dark room. A characteristic of the arc discharge compared to the positive: column discharge is that the concentration of electricity carriers in the arc discharge is several times (usually 102 to 104 times) greater than in the positive column.
In the case of the tube according to the invention, the distance between the electrodes is so small that an arc discharge occurs without a positive column.
It has been found that with this form of discharge, the use of neon has particular advantages over the use of other noble gases, since it has been shown that the light emission is much greater and only little of the pressure over a larger area of neon.
In addition, the use of neon has the advantage that the discharge tube emits light immediately after being switched on when the sodium vapor is only so low that it is practically not yet involved in the discharge, namely Neon light. When using argon, for example, practically no light is emitted in this case. When the sodium vapor pressure increases, the neon light mixes with the light emitted by the sodium vapor.
It has been shown that as a result, the monochromatic character, des. Light is partially suppressed, and colors in this light can be more easily distinguished than in pure sodium light or in light emitted by a mixture of sodium vapor and argon. The neon pressure is expediently chosen to be less than 4 mm, whereby the pressure at room temperature, i.e. not during operation, is meant.
It is advisable to choose the pressure of the neon so that it lies between a maximum and a minimum value, with this maximum value expressed in mm equal to 3.3 minus 11.5. 10--3. Q and the minimum value is 1.1 minus 4.10-3- Q, where Q is the inner surface in cm 'of the glass bulb of the discharge tube.
The relationships do not have an unlimited scope. They apply to piston areas of approximately 17.5 to 200 cm. With larger bulb areas, the pressure of the neon should be chosen between 1/2 and 2 mm (at room temperature). The optimum gas pressure, i.e. the pressure at which the greatest efficiency is achieved, is greater when using neon than when using other noble gases. This higher neon pressure is very desirable because it prevents the gas filling from disappearing too quickly during operation.
In addition, the sputtering of the incandescent cathode is lower at this higher gas pressure than at a lower gas pressure, which is beneficial to the life of the discharge tube. To increase this service life, it may even be desirable to choose the pressure of the neon somewhat greater than the optimal pressure. - A hot cathode with a high emissivity is expediently chosen.
The object of the invention is shown schematically in the drawing, for example, Darge.
Fig. 1 shows, for example, a discharge tube for emitting light according to the invention; FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 represent some curves measured with direct current load, which are determined with the aid of such discharge tubes and are important for assessing the invention.
The discharge tube shown in Fig. 1 has an almost spherical wall 1, on which see an outwardly projecting pinch point 2 is located. The power supply wires that lead to the electrodes of the discharge tube are passed through this pinch point.
These consist of a helically wound cathode 3 coated with an alkaline earth metal layer and two plate-shaped anodes 4 arranged at a distance of approximately 15 mm from the hot cathode. The tube, which has an inner diameter of 50 mm, contains a gas tank treatment, which consists of neon. That has a pressure of 2.5 mm at room temperature. The tube also contains a lot of sodium, the vapor of which is involved in the discharge. To reduce the heat output: the discharge tube, this is enclosed in a sheath 5 which is provided with a pinch point 6 through which the power supply wires of the electrodes are passed through.
These wires also serve as holders for the discharge tube. The space between the glass bulb of the drainage tube and the envelope is vented.
The neon not only facilitates ignition and discharge, it is also involved in discharging later during operation. The heat generated by the discharge heats the sodium contained in the tube so that the pressure of the sodium vapor is increased. A very strong light is then emitted from this vapor. The temperature is expediently increased so high that the pressure of the sodium vapor corresponds to a temperature of 200 'to <B> 300' </B> C. At this pressure, the efficiency: the discharge tube is greatest.
The discharge has the character of an arc discharge without a positive column. The ignition voltage is 17 volts, while the operating voltage of the discharge is 13 volts.
In a known manner, an impedance, for example in the form of a. Resistance, a choke coil or a stray field transformer connected in series with the discharge tube. Fg. 2 shows the number of international candles of the light emitted by the discharge tube according to FIG. 1 as a function of the gas pressure, namely for a neon, argon, krypton and helium filling.
The energy consumption (including the energy required to heat the hot cathode) is almost the same for the various gas fillings: namely 53 watts for the neon filling, 57 watts for the argon filling and 58 watts for the crypton filling. The pressure of the gas at room temperature is expressed in mm.
Curve A shows the dependence on the glass pressure when using neon, while: curves B and C for the use of argon respectively. Krypton apply. It can be seen from the figures: that: the light emission of the neon-filled discharge tube is considerably greater than: that of the argon- or krypton-filled discharge tube. Helium gives less favorable results. In FIG. 2, for example, line D shows the course: the candle strength of a helium-filled sodium vapor lamp.
Although the energy consumption of these helium-filled discharge tubes was somewhat smaller than that of the discharge tubes for which the lines <I> A, B </I> and C have been determined, namely 44 watts, a comparison of the curves shows that also taking into account : This lower energy consumption means that the efficiency is significantly lower than that of a neon-filled discharge tube.
The curves <I> A, B </I> and C show an apex, which is not the case with curve 1). The vertex of lines B and C is fairly sharp, but that of curve A is not. This is of great advantage because it means that the optimal value of the gas pressure of a neon filling is not as critical as that of an argon or krypton filling.
In addition, the optimal neon pressure is greater than the optimal argon and crypton pressure, which has the advantage: that a relatively considerable amount of neon has to be introduced into the tube, which is beneficial to the service life, because: this amount of neon does not disappear quickly , like the smaller amounts of argon and krypton. In addition, this high neon pressure has the advantage of less atomization of the hot cathode and, accordingly, of a longer service life of the discharge tube.
If you want to: extend this service life even more, you can choose the neon print - greater than: the optimal neon print. As a rule, however, one stays below 10 mm.
In Fig. 3 a few curves E, F, G and H of discharge tubes with different dimensions are shown. If the diameter of the spherical discharge tube with which the lines of Fig. 2 were established was 50 mm, that of the tube which provided the lines E and F was 60 mm, while the lines G and 71 on a spherical discharge tube were measured with a diameter of 45 mm.
The line E applies to a neon filling and an energy consumption in the discharge tube (including the heating energy .the hot cathode) of 90 watts, while the curve F for an argon filling and an energy consumption of. 8.5 watts applies. The curves G and H were BEzw at an energy consumption of 53 watts and a gas filling of neon. Argon detected. Also from: this figure it can be seen that the use of neon has great advantages.
The optimum pressure of the neon filling proves to be somewhat dependent on the size of the bulb area and the discharge tube. This optimal pressure is plotted as a function of the surface in FIG. 4 (curve K). The pressure is measured at room temperature in mm and the surface in cm2. From the figure it can be seen that the neon pressure should be chosen appropriately lower than 4 mm.
From FIGS. 2 and 3 it can be seen that the pressure of the neon can be slightly below or above the optimal value without major disadvantages, since the curves A, E and G are fairly flat at the apex , a change in the neon pressure close to the optimal pressure only results in a small reduction in the light emission.
The favorable values for the pressure are shown in FIG. 4 therefore also in a region above and below curve K, for example. in the area bounded by the straight lines L and M. The straight lines <I> L </I> and IVl are given by the function p = 3.3 minus 11.5. l0-3. Q resp. (approximately) p = 1.1 minus 4. 10-3. Q is shown, in which p is the pressure in mm and Q. is the size of the piston surface in em @.
It is therefore advisable to ensure that the neon pressure lies between the maximum and minimum values represented by these equations.
Of course, these relationships do not have a general scope, as can be seen, for example, from the fact that the lines <I> L </I> and IVl intersect the abscissa axis for larger piston areas, so that the neon pressure would have to be negative, which of course cannot be true. The specified relationship between the gas pressure and the piston area therefore only applies up to a piston area of 175 to 200 0 cm. With larger piston areas, the neon pressure should be chosen between 0.5 and 2 'mm.
