Method for controlling electrical vacuum apparatus, such as rectifiers, inverters or the like. In order to control rectifiers, inverters - or the like, the procedure so far has been that, for a given anode voltage, the ignition voltage of the vacuum apparatus is increased or decreased by controlling the potential of the grids upstream of the anodes, so that according to be loved Ignition of the arc has been prevented or enabled. The ignition voltage is to be understood as the voltage value that the anode voltage must exceed so that the arc can start.
The ignition voltage is influenced both by the constructive conditions of the rectifier (cross section of the arc path, built-in components, cooling, gas and vapor pressure, vapor density, etc.) and by the electrical state of the arc path, primarily through the space charge. As I said, this space charge has so far been used almost exclusively to control the vacuum apparatus, in which a positive or negative potential was arbitrarily pressed with the aid of control apparatuses upstream of the anodes.
If they were positively charged relative to the potential of the cathode, then the ignition voltage was reduced and the passage of the arc was released; if they were charged negatively, the ignition voltage was raised above the value of the anode voltage, and the passage of the arc was thereby blocked. This control therefore requires special feed lines to the grids, which must have insulated bushings through the rectifier vessel, and it also has various disadvantages. Apart from the fact that, in addition to the bushings for the anodes, there are also guides required for the grids, which make the construction of the rectifier more complicated and expensive, reignitions often occur on the grids.
These currents can assume considerable values if high limiting resistances are not provided, which in turn make control more difficult, since they themselves are not without influence on the charge of the grid. The voltage drop in these resistors is added to the control voltages, and the uniqueness of the charging potential is lost.
The possibility of re-ignition on the grid is increased by the fact that the control voltage raises the potential of the grid above the potential of the anodes, so that the grid-cathode potential gradient is often greater than the anode-cathode. Even if the series resistors in the grid circuit generally limit the fault currents to a harmless level, they can, however, adversely affect the control as such, for example through failure of the ignition or time shifts in the ignition torques,
which has to be rated as a significant disturbance in certain transformations. These disadvantages are avoided by the method according to the invention. According to this method, the control should not be effected by influencing the ignition voltage, but rather by influencing the electrode voltage.
If one sets the ignition voltage to a value that slightly exceeds the operating voltage of the anodes and increases the anode voltage briefly above the value of the ignition voltage to cause the anode to ignite, the arc will start in the same way as when the anode voltage would have been kept constant, but the ignition would have been reduced.
The invention thus provides a method for controlling vacuum apparatus (rectifiers, inverters or the like), in which the ignition voltage is higher than the operating voltage of the electrode, after which with the help of control devices -cyclically the successive electrodes in the phase Overvoltages are issued, which briefly raise the electrode voltage above the value of the ignition voltage in order to ignite the arc in mostly periodic order. enable.
So here the space charge is not used with the help of (grids to control the vacuum apparatus, but the electrode voltage itself, which is initially below the ignition voltage, but which is raised to ignite the arc. The advantages are manifold External means are not absolutely necessary to raise above the value of the electrode voltage, it is generally sufficient to narrow the passage diameter for the arc by constricting the anode sleeve, or by installing fixtures in it.
The arc path can also be set under the influence of a weak magnetic field, which deflects the electrons and thereby makes ignition more difficult. Finally, a constant space charge, which makes ignition difficult, could be brought about through built-in components, which are given a specific, uncontrollable potential. In this case, under certain circumstances, bushings cannot be avoided here either. However, since the potential of these internals does not need to be controlled, the ratios can be selected so that the risk of flashback on these internals is very reduced.
Another means of increasing the ignition voltage would be to connect the insulated grids used with anodes of another, preferably lagging phase, as this means that the grid has a negative potential at the moment of ignition of the associated anode, which increases the ignition voltage over the operating voltage the anode lifts. Of course, this connection must also be made via high resistances.
In any case, the essential thing is that by applying a brief overvoltage, the electrode voltage is raised above the ignition voltage for a moment, thus initiating the ignition of the arc. The moment of ignition can be selected and shifted as required within the half-period that is considered for the forward current. Depending on the nature of the apparatus and the circuit, there are then the consequences that can be expected with this shift in the ignition moment.
In this way, it is possible to regulate direct or alternating current, convert one type of current into another, control brushless motors, etc. The time it takes for each anode to conduct current is also significantly influenced by the location of the ignition moments.
The granting of the short-term overvoltage is possible in various ways. The anodes are firmly connected to the terminals of the transformer feeding the vacuum apparatus, and so their potential appears to be clearly defined at first. However, if you take into account that the inductance of the supply lines already plays a role for steep voltage fronts, you will see that if you supply the anodes with additional high-frequency voltages by inserting external voltages into the anode circuit, the anode potential is opposite to the potential which can change the associated transformer terminals to a large extent.
If the inductivity of the supply line is not sufficient, nothing prevents it from being artificially increased, for example by means of bends, kinks or air throttles. If you want to generate the overvoltage by briefly applying the anodes to a source of undamped oscillations, this can be done with the aid of an appropriate contact apparatus. Another means would be to use spark generators which give the anode overvoltages by means of arcing the spark generator is connected to the anodes parallel to the transformer via a spark gap.
Inductors, oscillators, friction or induction electrifying machines, etc., can be used as spark generators. It is advantageous to connect capacitors parallel to the spark gap, because this increases the intensity of the spark and the overvoltage generated by the anodes.
In order to ensure the onset of the arc, the vacuum apparatus is provided with permanently burning excitation arcs, which support the operation of the control device. The sequence, the spark, as well as the overvoltages shared by each anode (or cathode) can correspond to the operating frequency of the alternating current or, if the control demands it, to a different frequency. The process of control through an overvoltage given to the anodes can also be combined with the previous process of grid control by increasing the potential of the anode and that of the grid at the same time for ignition.
This can, however, be effected by one and the same means and by one and the same control device by permanently connecting the arc-blocking grid to the anode and controlling it by overvoltages that are issued to both parts at the same time. In this case, too, the overvoltage is supplied to the part of the anode supply line located outside the vacuum vessel, so that in this case too, bushings for the grids are completely avoided.
With this method, of course, instead of the direct connection of the grids to the associated anodes, the potentials of both can be distaned using direct or alternating voltages by continuously switching such voltages between the grids and the associated anodes, but also into the In this case the overvoltage is chosen to be so high. that the anode voltage briefly exceeds the ignition voltage.
The method described is applicable to all circuits in which grid control was previously used. It simplifies the construction of the rectifier and increases the safety and reliability of the control.
