Device for extinguishing the arc in metal vapor valves with the aid of capacitors connected in parallel to the arc. In the known devices for extinguishing the arc in metal vapor valves, with the help of capacitors that are parallel to the arc, the capacitor is switched on by a spark gap that is ignited by an additional voltage. This additional voltage can be generated as a function of the change in the valve current over time or as a function of the valve current itself. In both cases, a transformer is required to introduce the additional voltage into the capacitor's discharge circuit.
However, this transformer increases the inductance of the discharge circuit. The resulting strong delay in the rise in the discharge current in connection with the reduction in its peak value makes it difficult or impossible to extinguish the arc in the valve.
The invention now relates to a device for extinguishing the arc in metal vapor valves by means of capacitors, with or without bias voltage, which are placed parallel to the arc via a spark gap, the spark gap being ignited by an additional voltage generated by a transformer, in which, according to the invention, the additional voltage generating Ignition transformer is automatically fully or partially short-circuited immediately after ignition of the spark gap. The short circuit of the transformer causes a very large reduction in its reactance.
In the drawing, the invention is shown cal cally in Fig. 1 and 2 in Ausführungsbei play.
With 2 a metal vapor valve is designated, which is connected with anode and cathode in the positive conductor of a direct current network and whose arc is to be extinguished by connecting the capacitor 1 in parallel. 3 is the transformer, which generates an additional voltage at the spark gap in the event of an overcurrent in the direct current line, which brings the same to speak. In the area of the arc of the spark gap 4 is the auxiliary electrode 5. The arc of the spark gap which sweeps the auxiliary electrode 5 short-circuits the transformer 3, and only on the secondary side (Fig. 1) or when connected as an autotransformer according to FIG on the primary side.
This switches off the reactance of the transformer on the primary as well as on the secondary side. The capacitor is charged in such a way that at the beginning of its activation when the spark gap 4 responds, its positive coating is connected to the cathode of the valve. This can be done according to FIG. 1 expediently so that its coverings permanently with the positive respectively. negative DC bus are connected. At the moment of switching on, the voltage gradient from the anode to the cathode of the valve is destroyed by the reversely charged capacitor and vice versa, so that the arc in the valve disappears and the cathode spot also goes out.
When using this device on low voltages, an electromagnetic table blowing will be necessary so that the auxiliary electrode 5 is safely swept by the arc. At higher voltages, the less than proportional increase in the breakdown voltage with the electrode distance means that the three electrodes can be arranged in such a way that no electromagnetic blowing is required.
The extinguishing of the arc in the valve is all the more reliable; the greater the capacitance and the bias voltage of the capacitor and the smaller the inductance of the capacitor discharge circuit.
