Device with pressurized fluid transmission for controlling mechanisms with an initial empty stroke. The present invention relates to a device with transmission by pressurized fluid for the control of mechanisms having an initial empty stroke, for example for the control of the brake linkages of railway vehicles.
In these mechanisms, the initial empty stroke, due for example to the play existing between the brake pads at rest and the wheels and to that existing in the linkage joints, increases with wear. It results in an unnecessary expense of motive fluid and motive energy, expense which it is in the interest of reducing as much as possible.
According to the present invention, the control device comprises a fixed single-acting cylinder of large diameter, a piston sliding in this -cylindre .et intended to be connected to the device to be controlled, a mobile cylinder of small diameter also to single acting, integral with said piston and the rear end of which is open, a small piston sliding in this movable cylinder, springs pushing the small and the large piston respectively towards the open rear end of the small cylinder and towards the bottom of the large cylinder, which has an opening for the entry and exit of the working fluid, the open end of the small cylinder being adapted to be applied hermetically on the bottom of the large cylinder around said opening,
and latching means by which the large piston drives the small piston as it moves away from said bottom of the large cylinder, but is not driven in this same direction by the small piston.
With such a device, the quantity of fluid necessary to move the small udder is always low whatever the size of the empty stroke due to the play of the device to be controlled, and the expenditure of fluid necessary to move the vacuum. large piston and producing the really useful work is not noticeably increased because of this empty stroke.
Two embodiments of the object of the invention are shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing the first embodiment at rest and FIG. 2 shows in a similar way the same device during braking; Fig. 3 shows in section the details of FIG. 1 on a larger scale; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing schematically the second embodiment constituting a brake control for an automobile.
According to fig. 1 to 3, the brake cylinder 1 communicates with the source of air compressed by the orifice 2 with which its base is fitted; to the main piston $ is fixed an auxiliary cylinder .of small diameter 4 whose bottom has an orifice 5 vis-à-vis the orifice 2; a spring 6 pushes back the piston 3 so as to apply the bottom of the cylinder 4 on a seat 7 which surrounds the orifice 2 and thus to prevent the compressed air from entering the space 8 of the brake cylinder 1. A piston 9 can slide smoothly in auxiliary cylinder 4 against the action of a spring 10.
On its rod 11 is fixed a flat part 12 provided with teeth 13 able to mesh with the corresponding teeth 14 of levers 15 or pawls which are articulated at 16 on the cylinder 4 and constantly pulled towards one another by means of spells 18.
The rod 11 ends with a crossette 17 serving to actuate the control lever of the linkage-brakes.
The levers 15 come to rest by their end 20 on ramps 21 integral with the cylinder 1, when the auxiliary cylinder 4 integral with the piston 3 is in the rest position, so that their teeth 14 are then released from the teeth 13 of the part 12 (fig. 1). As soon as the piston 3 moves forward, driving the auxiliary cylinder 4 and the levers 15, the latter will be released from the rams 21 and will apply to the teeth of the part 12 which they will then drive rigidly.
A channel 22 communicates the interior spaces 28 of the auxiliary cylinder 4 and 8 of the brake cylinder 1 as soon as the piston 9 has moved a certain distance from the bottom of the cylinder 4.
The operation is as follows: The compressed air arrives through ports 2 and 5, acts on the piston 9, which, by its rod 11, the part 12 and the crossette 17, controls the linkage and brings the shoes into contact with the wheels . When the piston 9 has passed the orifice of the channel 22, the compressed air passes through the latter from the chamber 23 of the cylinder 4 into the chamber 8 of the brake cylinder; when the pressure in this chamber 8 is sufficient, the brake piston 3 detaches from the seat 7; the piston 3, while advancing, drives the auxiliary cylinder 4 and the levers 15 mounted on the latter and these levers whose ends 20 remain free from the ramps 21 and continue to drive the part 12, the rod 11, and, consequently , the wheelhouse.
The compressed air then having a free passage between the udder 3 and the seat 7 acts directly on this piston and the braking is done in the ordinary way.
For the release, the compressed air is evacuated from the chamber 8 and the piston 3 returns to its rest position under the action of the spring 6 driving the auxiliary cylinder and the entire linkage; the ends 20 of the levers 15 engage on the ramps 21, so that these levers are released from the teeth 13 of the part 12. The spring 10 then returns the piston 9 to its original position.
It goes without saying that this exemplary embodiment of the subject of the invention has been given purely as an indication and in no way limiting and that modifications of detail can be made without one -some for that of the field of the present invention.
Thus the communication between the chambers 23 of the auxiliary cylinder 4 and 8 of the brake cylinder 1 could also be effected by the opening of a small valve with res outlets mounted on the bottom of the cylinder 4 and not s 'opening that when the pressure in this cylinder has risen enough to move the piston 9 and bring the shoes into contact with the wheels.
To be sure that the auxiliary piston does not come back until the main piston has already returned to its starting position, that is to say that the levers 15 have disengaged from the teeth 13 of the workpiece 12, provision can be made for a valve arranged on the orifice 5 to allow the compressed air to enter the interior space 23 of the auxiliary cylinder and to prevent it from coming out. The rod of this valve may include an extension which will come to rest on the seat 7 when the main piston 2 has returned to the rear, which will cause its opening and then allow the auxiliary piston to turn back.
On the other hand, the -d'enclencher ment and tripping device 12, 15, 21 could be replaced by any other equivalent device.
The apparatus shown in FIG. 4 intended for controlling automobile brakes com takes a fixed cylinder 1 of large diameter in which slides a piston 3 integral with a movable cylinder 4 of small diameter without bottom, the open rear end 5 of which is supported under the action of a strong spring 6 against an annular seat 7 disposed on the bottom of the cylinder 1 around the opening 2 for the inlet and outlet of the pressurized fluid.
In the cylinder 4 slides a piston 9 whose rod 11 is intended to be connected to the brake linkage; this piston is pushed towards the end 5 by a weak spring 10 bearing on a part 4a @du cylinder 4, at the same time serving to guide the rod 11.
On the latter is mounted in friction a collar 31 having housings in which are placed balls 32, intended to cooperate with a conical surface 33 formed in the cylinder 4 to serve for the dragging of the rod 11 by the cylinder 4 in the direction of the arrow f. In addition, the collar 31 carries a circular shoulder 34 intended to cooperate with a cap 35 fixed on the cylinder 4 to serve for driving the collar by the cylinder in the opposite direction to that of the arrow f.
Finally, springs 36 are fixed on the flange 31 and arranged to abut against a fixed stop 37 in order to retain the flange and prevent the balls from jamming against the conical surface 33 when the rod 11 returns in the opposite direction. of that of the arrow f, and tends to drive the collar 31 by friction.
In this embodiment, the motor fluid is oil enclosed in the space comprised, on the one hand, between the bottom of the large cylinder and the pistons 3 and 9, and, on the other hand, in the space between the base 1a and a piston 38 sliding in a cylinder 39 integral with this base. The piston rod 38 is connected to a control pedal 40.
The bottom 1a of the large cylinder is further provided outside the seat 7 with an opening 41 which is normally closed by a valve 42 arranged to open towards the interior of the cylinder against the action of a valve. res spell callback 43.
The operation is as follows: At rest, the springs 6. and 10 maintain the pistons 3 and 9 in the position shown; the brakes are released.
When the driver presses the pedal 40, the piston 38 discharges the oil from the cylinder 39 through the opening 2 and the pressure of this oil on the piston 9 has the effect of pushing the latter with the rod 11 together. mant the weak spring 10 and by causing the linkage-of the brakes which opposes only a weak resistance until all the plays are caught up. At this moment, the resistance increases suddenly and the thrust of the 'udder 38 on the oil continuing, there results a certain overpressure of the oil which causes the opening of the valve 42; the pressure of the oil then acts on both the pin 9 and the piston 3, and forces the latter to advance, with the cylinder 4, in the direction of arrow f.
The conical surface 33 immediately bears on the balls 32 and the latter wedged between this surface and the rod 11 drag the latter by forcing, consequently, the brakes to apply. The braking power which can thus be obtained depends on the ratio of the diameters of cylinder 1 and cylinder 39 ratio which can be chosen as large as is desirable.
On the other hand, the initial displacement of the piston 38, serving to push back the piston 9 until the clearances are taken up, depends on the ratio of the diameters of the cylinder 39 and of the cylinder 4 and on. can choose this ratio so as to make this initial displacement as small as is desirable.
When the operator lets the pedal 40 go back, the springs 6 and 10 act to return the components to their initial position; the piston 3 is returned first by the action of the spring 6, with the cylinder 4; the cap 35 carries with it the collar 31 and the piston 9 is returned by means of the spring 10 with a certain delay by bringing the linkage of the brakes back to rest.
When the cylinder 4 has returned to rest, the springs 36 pressed against the stop 37 retain the flange 31 against the drive force by friction resulting from the continuation of the return movement of the rod 11, from so that the balls 32 do not wedge against the surface 33 and do not prevent this return movement.
Such a device is capable of the most multiple applications; among other things it can be used as a brake control device; it can be used to constitute a jack, the platform of which will first be applied quickly under the load to be lifted, the lifting force only occurring later; it can finally be applied each time the device to be controlled gives rise to a stroke at, empty or at low resistance before opposing a large resistance.
The device according to the invention will apply just as well, with modifications of detail, to vacuum brakes and to any other kind of brake actuated by a fluid.
