Method for operating valve-controlled electric motors. It is known that you can omit the commutator in DC motors and set it through controlled mercury vapor valves. By suitable control of these water valves, which step in place of the commutator lamellas at the individual taps of the magnetic field induced Arbeitswick lungs, exactly the effect of the commutator can be achieved. Such motors can be built for very high voltages without the fear of flashovers. However, these motors have the disadvantage that, when fed with pure direct current, the control of the valves fails when starting from standstill.
This is due to the fact that when the motor is supplied with pure direct current, the inherent voltage generated by the motor itself during rotation is used to extinguish the arc at the anodes. When starting from standstill of the motor, however, this residual voltage is missing, and special measures must therefore be taken to force the extinguishing of the arc in the control valves working one after the other when starting. The negative charge on the control grid is not sufficient to extinguish the arc, as the negative charge on the grid is neutralized and rendered ineffective by the arc itself.
In order for the grid to come into effect when starting, according to the invention, at least at the beginning of the starting process, the working winding of the motor is fed with a pulsating direct current whose instantaneous value drops periodically to zero during a working interval of each anode. Since the length of the working time of the individual anodes is relatively large when starting up due to the low speed of the motor, it is sufficient if the pulsation of the direct current supplied takes place for example 50 times per second.
In this way, when starting up at a certain speed, the anode current takes a course according to Fig. 1, while if a normal direct current is supplied when the motor is stationary, it would create an arc at the anode corresponding to the rotor position, which would not occur when the rotor rotates deleted and thus not passed over to the next anode who could.
In Fig. 1. the upper curve represents the anode current during start-up and the lower curve the grid voltage; with a is a working interval.
In Fig. 2 the circuit of the main circuit of an electric motor to carry out the starting process according to the invention He is shown schematically.
The motor terminals are connected to the switch u and can be connected to the AC network w for start-up and to the DC network g for normal operation. The grids for the grid control are connected via the resistors r1 to the contactor k, and via the resistors r2 to the negative pole of the voltage divider s, which is fed by the direct current source h.
The positive pole of the voltage divider is connected to the brush of the contactor and the middle of the voltage divider to the cathode of the control valve. Via the resistors r2, the grids keep a constant negative potential with respect to the cathode. Via the contactor k, which is driven by the rotor shaft, and the resistors r1, the grids receive positive voltage with respect to the cathode in cyclical order, which ignites the anodes assigned to the grids and the associated windings in the stator are supplied with current in the same order.
In this way, the mutually shifted stator windings a (Fig. 2) are successively charged with electricity and a constant torque is exerted on the rotor. Depending on the desired characteristics of the motor, the rotor is excited with the direct current emerging from the cathode of the control valve or by another direct current source, so that any desired characteristic can be achieved. just like a normal commutator motor. The improvement brought about by the invention relates exclusively to the starting process, while the running engine can be fed equally well with both pulsating and continuous direct current.
The pulsating direct current can be obtained in the simplest way by connecting the motor to a single-phase alternating current source instead of a direct current source when starting up.
