Hot cathode. The invention relates to a hot cathode for electrical discharge tubes.
The inventor has already proposed to produce a hot cathode for electrical discharge tubes in such a way that one made of a high-melting substance, e.g. B. tungsten or molybdiine existing core is assumed to which a metal wire is applied helically, where up this wire is coated with a substance of strong emissivity. The helically wound wire is preferably made of nickel.
Although excellent results have been achieved with these hot cathodes, it has been shown that the results can still be improved if, according to the invention, those who order from a high-melting metal are at least partially ordered with one made from a less high-melting metal A metal wire is wound onto it in a helical manner.
This helically wound wire is at least partially coated with a substance with strong dissolving power. The layer placed on the core, as well as the helically wound wire, can advantageously be made of nickel.
This cathode has the advantage that the emitting substance, which can also be present between the turns of the helically wound wire, does not come into contact with the high-melting metal of the distance, but with the less high-melting metal applied to this core to which the emitting substance adheres better than to the core material. If part of the wire screw is atomized, the cathode still remains effective, since the core continues to carry the remaining part of the wire screw and can conduct the heating current.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the invention "#objects.
The cathode shown has a wire or ribbon-shaped core 1, which consists of a high-melting and preferably poorly thermally conductive metal, for. B. tungsten, molybdenum or tautal. This core is partially coated with a thin layer 2, which is made of a less high-melting metal like the Keriiinmaterial and to which the emitting substance adheres excellently. In the illustrated execution example, the layer 2 ordered z. B. of nickel, in a known manner, e.g. B. electrolytically or by precipitation from the vapor phase, can be placed on the core.
The nickel melts at a lower temperature than tungsten and similar materials and is more easily atomized than these metals. It is known that the alkaline earth metals and the oxides of these metals, of which the emitting substance of the cathode can consist, adhere primarily to the nickel.
On the layer 2 a wire 3, which is in electrical contact with this layer, is helically wound. Gaps are left between the turns of this wire; but it is also possible that the turns lie against one another. The wire 3, like the layer 2, consist of a metal, e.g. B. nickel, with a lower melting point than the substance of which the core 1 is made. In some cases it is recommended that the structure consisting of the core and the wire screw is coated with a metal with a low melting point, e.g. B.
Nickel, to be coated so that the helically wound wire is firmly connected to your core, while in this case the emitting substance cannot come into contact with the core material. It is also possible to learn the wire 3 from a refractory metal such. B. to be made of tungsten, the tall with a less high-melting Me, z. B. nickel, existing layer is drawn over.
The wire 3 is covered with a substance having a high emissivity, e.g. B. covered with one or more alkaline earth metals or oxides of these metals. The emitting substance can be applied to the wire 3 in a known manner, e.g. B. in that a barium and strontium carbonate order of the mixture is applied to the wire and these carbonates are converted into oxides by heating; or in that an alkaline earth metal, e.g. B. barium, from the vapor phase is deposited on the wire, whereupon the alkaline earth metal can be oxidized if desired.
It is also possible to oxidize the wire 3 before applying the alkaline earth metal or to first coat it with a copper layer and to oxidize this metal. The emitting substance can be applied after the wire 3 has been applied to the core and the layer 2, but it is also possible to coat the wire 3 with the emitting substance or with a substance before it is wound onto the layer 2. from which this substance can later be produced.
Since the emitting substance in the spaces between the turns of the wire 3 does not come into contact with the wire 1 but with the material of the layer 2, in the present case nickel, it will adhere excellently to the cathode, thereby increasing the service life the cathode is favorably influenced.
In the embodiment shown, the core wire 1 protrudes from the ends of the helically wound wire 3 and the layer 2 on both sides. The ends of the wire 3 are fastened to the layer 2 BE, while the ends of the core wire 1 are fastened to the pole wires 4 and 5, which can be arranged in a known manner on the foot of a discharge tube.
The protrusion of the core wire from the wire screw 3 has the advantage that the heat generated in the cathode is dissipated relatively poorly to the full extent of the free ends of the core wire 1, so that the temperature of the entire emitting surface will be almost the same possible to connect the core together with the coiled wire to the power supply wires.
The cathode described above can be used in various discharge tubes, both high vacuum and gas-filled tubes, e.g. B. Ent charge tubes to receive or strengthen Ver high-frequency oscillations, rectifier tubes, X-ray tubes, etc. be used.
