DC switch with gas discharge tube. When using a gas discharge tube in an alternating current circuit, the switching off of an alternating current can be effected in a simple manner by interrupting the excitation or ignition of the gas discharge tube. This simple device cannot be used to switch off a direct current, since in this case the current of the gas discharge tube does not automatically pass through zero and thus causes the discharge to go out.
The present invention now provides a device which extinguishes a direct current flowing in a gas discharge tube by superimposing a current from the cathode to the anode on the direct current so that the gas discharge tube loses its conductivity when the total current is zero. A restart of the direct current can only be done by re-igniting the gas discharge tube.
The accompanying schematic drawing relates to several exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention. The basic arrangement of the switch is shown in Fig. 1. Therein means. 1 the gas discharge tube serving as a switching organ; 2 are its electrodes, at least one of which is made of mercury. 3 is an auxiliary power source which can be switched to the gas discharge tube by means of a switch 4.
If the current source 3 is designed in such a way that it can send a current through the gas discharge tube which is at least equal to the existing current and directed in the opposite direction to it, then goes out. the current in the gas discharge tube. How this auxiliary power source can be designed, for example, is described below.
Fig. 2 indicates a practical embodiment of the subject matter of the invention. 1 is the gas discharge tube with the anode 5 and the cathode 2. The direct current in the valve is indicated by the arrow a. From the switching device consists of a circuit with a capacitor 7 and a switch 6. Before switching off, the capacitor 7 is charged by an auxiliary power source 8 in the indicated sense.
Switching off takes place by inserting the switch 6, as a result of which the charge of the honing capacitor 7 is equalized via the conductive gas discharge tube. If the charge of the capacitor is sufficiently high, the current flowing through the inside (arrow U) against the main current of the gas discharge tube increases linearly until the total current of the gas discharge tube is zero and the discharge is extinguished.
Another embodiment of the invention is shown in FIG. 3. The auxiliary circuit consists of a capacitor 7 in series with an inductance 9. By supplying the oscillating circuit 1, 7, 9 with an alternating current source 10, it generates an alternating current of the size of the main current and sent at a desired frequency. As soon as the alternating current is inversely the same size as the direct current in the discharge tube 1, the direct current and the alternating current go out.
In order to reduce the apparent power of the alternating current source 10 as possible, it is advantageous to choose the inductance 9 and the capacitance 7 in this way. that the oscillating circuit 1, 7, 9 works in voltage resonance. In this case, the power of the auxiliary power source is equal to the active power of the oscillating circuit, and this is relatively small.
The onset of the auxiliary current can, for example, by inserting a switch or by switching on the auxiliary voltage. Another possibility is to put a gas discharge tube in the auxiliary circuit and ignite it when the direct current is to be switched off.
The auxiliary voltage source indicated in FIG. 3 can also be used in a simple manner to ignite the unexcited gas discharge tube. An arrangement, in this sense, shows: FIG. 4. The current for igniting the gas discharge tube is taken from a special high-voltage coil 12.
