Ignition device for internal combustion engines. The present invention relates to a device for igniting an explosive mixture in an internal combustion engine using sparks produced by a spark plug supplied by a current source at high voltage and it is characterized by a capacitor in series with an auxiliary spark gap, the discharge of which is intended to reinforce the lighting spark, the condenser-auxiliary spark gap assembly being mounted in parallel. across the spark plug.
Several embodiments of the object of the invention are described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 shows a front elevational view of a first embodiment of the object of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same form; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1, the candle being omitted; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken along line 4-4 of fig. 1, the candle still being omitted; Fig. to is a view in vertical section following, line 5-5 of FIG. 3 to show the arrangement of the metal blades of the condenser, the insulated blades of the latter being supposed to be removed; Fig. 6 is an elevational view of a second embodiment constituting a variant of that shown in FIG. 1 to 5; Fig. 7 is a view similar to the previous one, the spark gap capacitor being shown in vertical section;
Fig. 8 is an elevational view of a third embodiment in which the spark gap capacitor is disposed around the porcelain body of the spark plug; Fig. 9 is a view in vertical section of this third embodiment.
Figs. 1 and 2 show an insulating box 1 containing the condenser and the auxiliary condenser in question. This box is closed by the insulating cover '-) 0 held by bolts 21 and 229. The box and the cover 9.0 are. drilled in the middle to allow the passage of screws 2 and 15. A la vîs, 2 is attached a thread coming from the. magneto or similar high voltage to, current source II and, to the screw 15, is connected a metal strip or strip 16 which is fixed by an elastic tie 16 '' to the metal body 18 of the spark plug, which is grounded to the magneto or V source.
This embrace only partially surrounds said eorps 18. This blade-shaped part 16 has a few undulations 16 'so as to be able to adapt to different candles. The screw 2 is also in electrical connection with the pole 19 of the spark plug 18 by the intermediation of the blade or strip 17 coming out of the box 1 and having the same width as the blade 16. It is thus seen that the capacitor system -éclateur is placed in bypass on the circuit supplying the spark plug and that the discharge of the capacitor takes place between the two electrodes of this finc. 3 shows the arrangement of the condenser in the box 1. This capacitor is eoinpose of two frames 4 and 4 'comprising the conductive strips 13 and 10 nour the first and the blades 8 and 6 for the seeondo.
These conductive blades are isolated from each other by the insulating sheets 5, 7, 9 and 11. The blade 6 forms a flange and constitutes one of the poles of the spark gap; it is between it and screw 2 that the disruption spark caused by the capacitor occurs. For this spark to occur, the armature 4 'must be isolated from the strip 17. For this purpose, an insulating sheet 3 with a hole in its center is interposed between the flange 6 and h) h) 17, to allow the passage age of the stalk 3 '. The frame 4 is connected to the blade 16 by the flange 14 and the screw 15. So that a spark cannot burst between the flange 14 and the frame 4 ', an insulating sheet 12 is slipped between the two.
Fig. 4 shows hi shape of the 16 '' embrasze integral with blade 16 and bringing current to the body of the spark plug.
The thread. 5 shows the arrangement of the sheets, the eonductors 6, 8, 10 and 13 constituting the reinforcements of the capacitor placed in the box 1. FIG. 6 represents an embodiment of the embodiment of the object of the invention where an insulating box 25 contains a cylindrical capacitor arranged around the insulated cable 23 bringing the current of the magneto M to terminal 19 of the spark plug 18 through the intériuur wire 24 and where the current is brought to the body of the bou gie 18 by a part the) similar to that seen above.
Fig. 7 shows (read the capacitor consists of a flange of two sheets 30 and 34 connected to the flange 36 and a reinforcement of a sheet 32 connected to the flange 28. These sheets are surrounded by the insulators 31 , 33 and 35, The disruptear is constituted by the flange 28 and the conductive part 26 placed in electrical contact, with the wire 24 by the screw 27. The flange 36 is connected by the terminal 37 to the connection 16 attached to the body of the candle 18.
In the embodiment shown in fig. 8 and 9, the auxiliary capacitor-elator is arranged around the porcelain body of the spark plug. This porcelain body is divided into two parts 38 and 39 both traversed by the electrode 40 of the spark plug and separated by a metal washer 41 forming a pole of the auxiliary spark gap. The cylindrical-shaped capacitor is constituted by a metallic inner cylinder 42 and, a second metallic cylinder 43 separated from the first by a cylindrical insulating sheet 44.
This cylinder 43 forms a mass with the shielding sleeve 45 in electrical contact with the nut 46 and the metallic body 47 of the spark plug. The sleeve is clamped against 46 by a shoulder of the upper portion of the porcelain body. The spark of (Iisrupture occurs, between the buzzer. 41 and the cylindrical wool 42.
rqemble forming eond; eiis-, tteiir-ela- tenr is mounted in parallel with the circuit leading to the two electrodes 40 and 47 of the spark plug.
This arrangement constitutes a compact appearance of boligir, à capacitor- klaieur, being able to z; 'Pcl, -ipter directly instead of (the n'-Im-portç-- which bou #, ie gold.
