Filter press type electrolyser. The object of the invention is an electrolyzer of the filter press type.
Electrolysers of the filter press type comprise alternating electrodes and diaphragms in which there are openings forming by their juxtaposition channels which are used for the circulation of electrolyte, emulsions produced by electrolysis and containing electrolyte and oxygen or hydrogen. In these electrolysers a small part of the current is derived from its destination, which is the release of gases at the surface of the electrodes, and takes the path of the above channels.
The shunt current must overcome the resistance of relatively narrow channels, but on the other hand has to overcome the bias voltage only a smaller number (the times than on the normal path of the current; it tends to release gases on the metallic parts of the channels, whether they belong to the electrodes or to the diaphragms. From the point of view of the impurity of the gases produced in total, the importance of this by-pass current is perfectly negligible. The electrodes are not likely to be corroded by C #, derivative current, because they are made of a metal which does not corrode or are covered with a strong layer of such a metal, nickel for example.
The diaphragms, on the other hand, can be attacked if certain measures are not taken; among these is the nickel plating of the diaphragms, which is however complicated.
According to the invention, corrosion of the diaphragms is avoided, thanks to the fact that those of the sections of the channel which are formed in the diaphragms are coated with removable conductive linings.
The appended drawing schematically represents an embodiment of the electrolyser, given by way of example.
Figs. I and 2 are a front elevation and a partial side elevation of the above embodiment; Fig. 3 is a section on a large scale along the line III-III of FIG. 1.
The above embodiment comprises, as usual, a number of electrodes a and alternating diaphragms b of rectangular shape, energetically applied to each other by means which the drawing does not show. Each diaphragm b has a metal frame c, of iron for example, to which oblique metal parts e, of iron for example, are welded; a partition d is fixed in the space delimited by the four sides of the frame c and the parts e. The electrodes also have cutouts in three of their corners.
The voids f y lr, of the diaphragms and the voids i, j le of the electrodes are located opposite 'and; form: three longitudinal channels; the upper channels fi and gj serve to evacuate the emulsion produced by the electrolysis and is component of electrolyte and oxygen or hydrogen ; the lower channel k ls is intended for the , circulation of the fresh electrolyte.
To prevent the bypass current from causing corrosion of the frames c of the diaphraP-ines h and so as not to have ii, nickel these frames, those of the sections of the channels f _?, G j, < / I> h. the which can be found next to keys di:
i- phragms b are internally coated with removable and interchangeable conductive metal fittings Z, exactly matching their shape and having as length la, lar-, -, e # Lir frames.
As a precaution, the sections of these channels included in the electrodes a. are also provided with similar movable and interchangeable conductive metal linings, the length of which is the thickness of the electrodes.
When the various gaskets no longer give sufficient protection to the electrodes and diaphragms, as a result of the corrosion suffered, they are removed and replaced by others without difficulty. The material of which the frames of the diapiragms are made may be other than iron; the partitions can be of any suitable material. The cross section of the electec- trolyzer may not be rectangular. The layout of the channels may vary.
The following cases of fittings may be: provided for one or two of the channels only; the pads of the electrodes can be omitted.
